Alex is taking her sisters and their kids to her camp in the Adirondacks when the unthinkable happens. The country is being attacked and they must seek immediate shelter. Greeted by guns and bullets when they try to find refuge, they hide in a cave to avoid the fallout. When her sisters leave to look for their husbands, Alex is left to care for the kids. It's a 35-mile hike to her camp through villages that have become killing fields. Alex rescues two children orphaned by the violence. Society is devolving. Looters, rapists, and killers are in control. Her life is changed forever when she stumbles on a cache of food only to discover its owner is a man who'll haunt her nightmares: half guardian angel, half demon. Both barbarian and benefactor. A strange mixture of brutality and gentleness, cruelty and caring. A man named Wolf!

Post-apocalyptic Horror – Not Romance

Remember “The Day After”, the 1983 movie about the immediate aftermath of a nuclear war? It was a horrifically real depiction meant to raise consciousness and help make sure it never became reality. It is not a feel-good movie and certainly not a romance. TRIBES is along those lines but adds rape and much more human killing human. At least “The Day After” showed some people being compassionate, working together, and helping each other. These are very rare in TRIBES.

Alex is taking her two sisters and their seven kids to her camp in the Adirondacks when a nuclear war starts. Alex and the kids are the only decent human beings we see for most of the book. Wolf, the “hero”, is not a decent person! At no point did I want them to be together.

Alex is a strong woman, smart, level-headed, and kind. Being a hiking and nature enthusiast, she has just enough skills to keep them alive at the start. Intelligence and perseverance allow her to improve these skills and their situation. I liked all the survival information and descriptions of nature, finding them both entertaining and informative. Alex eventually learns to shoot, track, and hunt. The descriptions of her thought processes when raiding potentially abandoned buildings were great. If there weren’t other people still in the world, Alex would have easily kept herself and the kids alive and even thrived.

But they are not alone, far from it! They were on the road when they got warning of an imminent strike. None of the locals would give them shelter, but at least they didn’t kill them. I think those locals died anyway because soon the only people left in the world were murderers and rapists. They killed everyone from babies to old people. It is a starkly pessimistic apocalypse. I love post-apocalyptic fiction, especially without zombies, and this is the worst vision of what humanity could be that I’ve read.

Though this novel contains two people who get together and have sex, it doesn’t meet my definition of a romance. I found it categorized at Amazon under “Science Fiction Romance”, so I was severely disappointed. There were no reviews anywhere to correct my expectations, which is why I felt especially compelled to write this review. My post-apocalyptic fiction doesn’t need romance, but it does when categorized as such.

If you are looking for a “romance” with good feels, hot sex scenes, a hopeful feeling, and a leading man with good qualities, steer clear of this!

It is also categorized under “Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction” and “Dystopian Science Fiction” which fit. I would also put it in “Horror”.

It is written in close 3rd, mostly from Alex’s POV. But there is frequent head-hopping within a chapter, mostly short dips into the children and Wolf. I don’t like head-hopping and find it disorienting.

Very long paragraphs and character background loaded at the front failed to grab me, but I kept going, expecting something to happen soon. It did, but the long paragraph style continued throughout, and I’m just not a fan. It also bothered me that time passed between these long paragraphs with no indication, leaving me to realize it later. At least a double carriage return would have been nice.

I feel like the book would have been better if it started with Alex noticing the people missing, the radio notification, and the women’s reactions. Their reactions would tell me what I needed to know about them. I don’t need all the background loaded into the front, and the book would start with a whoosh. It took so long for the actual bombs to be revealed that I was wondering if the whole thing wasn’t a horrific hoax or mistake. When we get inside Wolf’s head, we again get a lot of backstory loaded in. I’d have preferred this come out in conversation or something. There really isn’t much on screen dialogue between Alex and Wolf, no “get to know you” conversations or discussions about how Wolf is treating Alex or the kids or how Alex wants them treated.

There are some typos, missing periods and quotation marks, and a few unnecessary dialogue tags. Some of the book, within and outside of dialogue, is in bold, which I’ve never seen before. It clearly indicated emphasis. It didn’t really bother me but felt weird.

I just couldn’t enjoy this either a romance or a non-romance. I didn’t find the sex scenes hot and never rooted for the couple together, but I didn’t get the revenge killing I wanted either when I had moved to looking at this as a horror novel. I don’t wish I could give it no stars though. It deserves the one star for the third paragraph I wrote here.

I received a free copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I’m very conflicted after reading this book. It’s not terribly written. It’s well edited and flows nicely. Scenes are described perfectly, and there are no punches pulled when it comes to the violence.

The author has clearly done a lot of research on what it would take to survive an apocalypse like what’s presented in the book. The author also deserves so much credit for having Alex, the main character, go out of her way to get field guides and books along those lines. She never stops searching for knowledge. I never see that happen, and that’s the only way people would actually get by in this scenario.

The kids aren’t very defined, but I didn’t mind that. This was a story about Alex, not them, though sometimes it did feel like the author forgot they existed. Especially the youngest ones. They really didn’t do much, and I wonder if anything would have been lost if they weren’t in here.

**Okay, so I don’t normally do this, but spoilers past this point. Don’t continue if you don’t want to know.**

Most of this book consists of Wolf and Alex, and that’s not a good thing. It’s written like a romance, but it couldn’t be farther from that. Wolf is an abusive prick that hits, belittles, and controls Alex’s and the kids’ lives. His first instinct is to scream and then paddle flesh if that doesn’t work. I hate people like this. I grew up with someone like this, and I felt like I was back with this person while I was reading this book.

The biggest problem with Wolf, though, is that his first interaction with Alex resulted in him raping her. I don’t know why the author went this route, especially since the book ends with Alex confessing her love for him. How can I believe this love is genuine? I don’t think a victim can ever truly love their rapist. The relationship will always be askew. She could have forgiven him, but that’s about all I see happening.

I have a sour taste in my mouth thanks to this book. The content makes me feel unclean, and I fear for the kids in this novel. They’re the ones the most screwed over in the end. This is more of a horror novel then it will ever be a romance. If that’s what the author was going for, I’d be fine with that, but it doesn’t feel like that was the intent.

If I ignored how well this book was written, it’d get no stars for the relationship between Alex and Wolf, but I can’t do that. There’s potential here, and I want to see more by the author (she’s very talented), so it gets a 3-star rating. If it had just stuck to survival (or Wolf was a completely different character), this would probably be a 4 or a 5-star book.

Not what I expected

On a positive note, the book was well written, the author has a way of making you want to know more about the characters. But you only get to see them on the surface, and the story line set women’s place in this world back about 60 yrs. in a nutshell, women can be very strong, yay! But without their man to smack them around verbally, emotionally and physically, they become needy, crazy or lumps of indecision. Too much goriness for the sake of sensationalism too. I would love to read more post apocalyptic books where people come together to survive instead of turning into killers, rapist and zombies. Ok, no zombies in this book.

TW rape, rape of children (off page) and cannibalism. Probably other stuff. It was dark and not in the hot way dark romance can be.

Definitely an interesting story. Not overly romantic or erotic. Some real sad shit. This is not really a criticism, but the authors age shows in the writing. There was a part where the hero says he likes when pussy tastes a little fishy and I just... 🥴

The story itself is pretty compelling. It starts off strong and I really enjoyed the beginning. The rest of the review is cranky, so take it with a grain of salt.

Why! Is everyone! Always! Shouting!
The gratuitous italics, bolding, and exclamation points is incredibly distracting.

Didn't think much of Wolf on first acquaintance but now I want to do actual physical violence. Alex isn't any better. I'm a social moron and allergic to confrontation but even I can suck it up and talk about my feelings occasionally.

And his misogynistic bullshit. Has he never heard the saying "you have to sleep some time"? Do I just come from a family of crazy women who it was understood would only take so much crap before resorting to homicide? Anyway, what prompted that rant was this little tidbit:

From what little she'd told him, Alex had been a well-educated, successful career woman before the war. A ballbusting, card-carrying, Me Too movement, feminist whiner. Out there demonstrating and demanding her rights with the rest of the cranky bitches. The ones bent on cutting off the balls and emasculating every male who crossed their path.

Now, I like to dunk on liberals as much as the next gal but I think I'm actually offended here. It's been months there's been no progress in their relationship that's positive. If I hadn't skipped ahead I would be worried after what happened with her sisters. No, instead of being a crafty little minx now that a man shows up she's a scared little bunny. Trauma is a bitch but damn woman.

Personally, I liked this book VERY, VERY much.
IMO, it seems to me that most people who disliked it did so due to 2 main reasons:
#1: the anti-H's sexual assault of the heroine the 1st time he came across her
#2: this is not a feel good romance.
IMO the author is presenting a very grim look at what might happen if civilized society broke down. What might happen when those retaining their 'civilized' attitudes encounter harsh survival needs as well as people who most certainly have NOT retained their civilized side.
I found this to be an intriguing & very thoughtful presentation of a truly grim situation. And while any 'romance' WAS long in coming, very hard to find/see, VERY DARK, angst ridden (on heroine's part), non-con/very dub-con, I felt the author made clear that the anti-H was handling things the way HE knew how in order to protect & defend those he WAS coming to CARE about very much against illness, injury, starvation, attack & death.
So overall, while this is in most ways a bleak grim tale, there are sparks of light & love, of caring amidst savagery & survival, of hope & togetherness in isolation, to be found.
So contrary to many of the other reviewers, I did find I liked this book & the story very, very much.

Can a Couple Whose First Meeting Ends in Rape Find Romance?

Even in a post-nuclear war setting, I doubt it. I docked the rating by two stars because, in Alex's place, I would have shot, or poisoned, Wolf, her "benefactor," to death long before she and her brood of children evicted him from their home. This is a plot point that stretches my suspension of disbelief too far. Despite the fact that he takes his senses of duty and honor seriously, in Alex's place I wouldn't even entertain the thought of accepting him back, let alone do so. Which is another plot point that goes too far for me to find beleivable.

Maybe I'm unreasonably prejudiced against Ben Wolf, but I don't think so. In almost all ways he represents the worst traits of the "Alpha" American Male and I've seen the reactions these types of personalities inspire in women. The majority of whom despise such men unreservedly and, often, quite vocally. Alex coming to love the abusive, domineering, egotistical, emotionally distant, man who chases her down, rapes her, then let's her take the books she scavenged and some canned goods by way of "trade" is unbelievable.

OMG! Such a fantastic book, but not for the faint of heart. There are many potential triggers for some readers in this book. A Columbus Day weekend camping trip to the Adirondacks for Alex, and her family turns into a nightmare when a warning over the radio tells them that the country is under attack. They quickly find out that the residents of the small towns and villages won't help them with shelter, so they end up sheltering in a cave that Alex and her husband had previously explored. It's 35 miles to the cabin, and Alex's sisters have taken their transportation return to the city to find their husbands, and left Alex to care for their seven children. I think these characters are well written and realistic. Violence, suspense, and many unexpected twists in the plot made it difficult to put this book down.

Unique

This story is brutal. I know it's the apocalypse but I hope people don't turn evil as quickly as they did in this book. Seemed a little unrealistic and was just hard to read it was so depressing.

The writing is ok. A little too wordy, I found myself skimming paragraphs.

This is NOT a romance. Not even a dark one. There are sex scenes and descriptive rape. The MMC is a terrible person, the definition of abusive and controlling and I couldn't find it in me to root for him. I kept hoping the FMC would let him die but she kept going back for more.

I like dark romance but I guess I draw the line here. Not for me.

Giving 3 stars because it's unique, decently written and if this is the type of story you want to read, it's worthwhile.

Stunning Adversity, Horror, Beauty and Hope

Imagine your personal worst case scenario, then that of you fear, family, and every agency responsible for dealing with tragedies man made or natural. Then stack up all those worst case events, like an endless pack of cards.
Throw in one small woman and a double handful of children. Add a stapping brute, maginalized by ci ilzation, but made to overcome Armageddon.
Herein lies the tale.
Proceed with caution, plan to overcome terrible afversitu, but determined to survive and thrive.
Good reading

Why You should read this book

This is a fantastic book with characters so real after you've finished the book, the characters are still fresh in your mind like friends. Alex is the main person it all revolves around. She goes from a city girl to dealing with situations that make you want to bite your nails. It's a thriller, a love story, & a horror story as well. I really enjoyed it & so much I couldn't put it down & it's 1AM!! I highly recommend it & would give it 10 stars if I could!!

A very good apocalyptic story

It starts with a car ride up to camp in the forest, when the civil defense warnings go off. They aren't quite to their cabin yet when it's already done! The 3 sisters and a bunch of their kids are stuck in the forest when everything goes to hell her sisters run off, anyway it's a very realistic story about how bad it can get and that the one person who irritates you most can also be your soul mate!!!

This book took me by surprise. It had the potential to be so much more. I really enjoyed the premise but I was wanting things fleshed out more. At times it was confusing as to what was happening. I would've like a better ending, especially, in precarious times.

GREAT READ!…at first, I was leery about reading this book because so many of them seemed to be the same. But this one I did not put down until I had read the whole thing. It held me from the very first word.

Interesting plot

Not a typical everything-turns-out-ok book. Lots of violence and negativity about the future of mms an in a post-apocalyptic world but sadly probably accurate.

Loved the book. Very unique

This was a unique post apocalyptic book. I read some of the reviews . Many were upset about it not being a romance book, there was rape, human trafficking, senseless murders, abuse and language belittling women. Hello negative reviewers, this is a post apocalyptic book. There is no happily ever after. Basically the civilization we live in is gone. The strongest survives. Books like this are not suppose to be politically correct or motivated.

I enjoyed reading this book. Very entertaining

Good but......

3.5 Mostly a great story. I just really hate how the hero and heroine met. That was a terrible way to Introduce the hero. How did you expect us to want finished when you had him doing that? That tainted the story. I had to block that out of my mind. Smh. The hero was kind of messed Up from a bad childhood. I liked that Alex had enough and let him have it. I do not condone any of the anti-heroes behaviors.
