Ashton Freeman is an architecture professor at Oberlin College in Ohio. It is summer break and he wants to take his family with him (his wife Elise is an artist, their 17-year-old daughter Claire plays the violin and their 14-year-old son Christian is a history buff) to Columbia, South Carolina where he can study Robert Mills architecture. He hopes to write a book about this architect. They find out that there are many Civil War sites in Columbia. They know very little about this time in history, so they decide to study these different sites throughout the summer, so they can learn about what really happened. Christian said, “Wouldn’t it be so cool if we could actually go back in time and see everything happen, and talk with the people from back then?” “That would be cool!” his sister added. “Like Back to the Future!” Their mother shook her head. “I don’t know. That sounds like it might be a little dangerous!” “But thrilling, right?” their father said, smiling. Claire sighed. “It’s too bad that life can’t be like it is in the movies!”
