Some talents are often said to be innate. When I look at the writing ability I have carried within me, I think it would not be entirely wrong to say that this, too, was something I was born with. Even while I was still in school, my imagination had developed to the point where I had begun creating and writing my own stories.

I still remember when I finished sixth grade and entered seventh. I took the unused blank pages left in my old school notebooks, put them together to make a new notebook, and wrote my first story in it. Naturally, I had no real understanding of how a story should be written at that age, so it was filled with mistakes. But that hardly mattered to me. I had written a story of my own while still so young— and that, in itself, felt like something worth celebrating.

Then came the years when most children my age were busy playing, having fun, and discovering the world of romance, while I spent most of my time either reading books or writing. Libraries were still a part of everyday life in those days, and the library in our neighborhood had hardly a book, comic, or magazine that escaped my attention.

I kept writing just as passionately. During those years, I wrote countless novels, short stories, film scripts, songs, and probably a little of everything else. But life eventually became a struggle of its own, and I became so caught up in it that none of those early writings ever made it into the public eye. Not a single one of them was published at the time.

Now, after making my way through those years and all the complications that came with them, I have begun a new chapter of my life as a writer. I may be reasonably good at a few other things, but writing— that is my life. Perhaps I was born to write.

For the past several years, I have done little more than write, and I have now written more than seventy books, published in both Hindi and English. For me, writing is no longer simply a hobby or a profession; it is a part of who I am— a part of my life without which I would perhaps never feel entirely complete.
