I enjoyed Death by Dessert. It is a basic cozy mystery, which I enjoy. However, I think I would have enjoyed it much better if I had read the books in order. It wasn't that Ms. Collins doesn't give enough backstory, she does. It's just that the overall arc of the series would be much more enjoyable if read in order. The characters are down-to-earth, relatable, and realistic. The dialogue feels natural, for the most part, and there are a couple of twists. It is not a deep, psychological thriller by any means, but it doesn't pretend to be. Good, quick, escapist reading. These are the pros of this book.
Now for the cons (you didn't think it was perfect, did you?). This book could use the services of an editor and a proofreader; at least a proofreader for sure. There are too many elementary typos that anyone could catch; in other words, no degree needed. For example, I don't know if the town's name is Hearts Grove or Heart's Grove. It was spelled both ways multiple times, but it's probably Heart's Grove as that spelling was used the majority of the time. (Maybe not. I just noticed that the title has Hearts Grove Cozy Mystery Book 10. Now I'm really not sure which is correct!) And these two sentences: "The thought was that he was in trouble, and if that were the case her email might help with that since she'd offered to help him out of that trouble, but would he believe her? Would he take her up on that?" That's five uses of "that" in two sentences. (Now she's got me doing it!) I'm sure a good editor could have suggested another way to write the sentence so the reader didn't feel like they were stuttering. I had to read it twice to be sure I understood! Now, I know I'm picky and these things may not bother you at all. Obviously, they weren't a deal-breaker for me since I gave it 4 stars. It is just one of my pet peeves. I seem to find quite a few indie authors who don't make use of family and/or friends to proofread for them. If you aren't interested in putting out the best work possible, why bother?
I will admit my interest has been piqued enough that I will look for the following books in the series (I'm not sure if I'll go back to the beginning, but I might.) because this was a very good story, all things being equal.
I obtained a review copy from Booksprout and want to thank them and Ms. Collins for allowing me to read it. This is my honest opinion.

Mix deadly chocolate, blackmail, disappearing
bodies, business ruined, tunnels under some
properties, a missing nephew who does not
want to be found.
Henrietta Hewitt lives and runs the H H Antique
Shop in Hearts Grove, Washington. She lives
with a Flame Point Siamese cat named Sepia.
Henrietta is following clues to locate her sister,
Clementine’s son, Calvin. But to no available.
Henrietta along with her beau, Private
Investigator, Ralph Gershwin decide to take a
night out and attending a chocolate tasting at
Sassy’s Sweets. What could go wrong tasting
chocolate?? They are on the last course of the
chocolate tasting, when a man jumps out of
his seat then fall over dead from the chocolate
dessert he just ate. Sassy is arrested.
Henrietta along with Ralph and his son jump
right on their own investigating as they know
their friend has been set up.
But why? By whom? Who is the real murderer?
Relatable characters involved in an unusually
plotted murder and landowning scheme with
the subplot of the nephew who does not want
to be found leads the reader to an intriguing
read.
This is book # 10 in the Hearts Grove Cozy
Mysteries series. This is the first book in the
series I have read. The author mixes the
past and present together effortlessly so
I had no problem following along immediately.
An enjoyable read.
I volunteered to read Death by Dessert. Thanks
to the author via Booksprout for the opportunity.
My opinion is voluntary and my own.

Friendship and Hot Chocolate

I absolutely love Henrietta and Ralph. She owns HH Antiques and he a retired detective that now has a detective agency . His son, Scott, is a computer whiz and does the digging for info for the agency. Henri has an inquisitive nature and Ralph has convinced Henri to join him in the investigations. The relationship between the two is beginning to morph very slowly to something more than friends, but Henrietta has a hard time letting it happen. One of their friends that runs a chocolate shop is arrested for murder when a man that Sassy had once dated dies from an allergic reaction during the tasting. Proving her innocence seems impossible when another murder is discovered. Who, when, why, and where is the body? Full of lots of being human moments and some tears along the way. Henri knows all will be alright because Ralph promised they will get "them"! I recommend this series and recommend you read them in order.

Book 10 of a fun, mystery murder series that keeps you guessing and leaves you with questions! Henrietta and Clementine think they caught a break in trying to find Clementine's son but it was not to be. To make Clementine feel better Henrietta decides what they need is a chocolate tasting party at Sassy's. But that didn't turn out too well either when someone drops dead and Sassy is arrested. It is up to Henrietta with Ralph to find the murderer and free her friend. Intertwined with this plot is the mystery of the DWC and why they want to own the town, and what about the tunnels, what do they have to do with everything. This is a fun, can't put it down series that makes you want more! Will Ralph and Henrietta develop a closer relationship? Will we find out what the DWC has in mind for the town? Will Clementine every find her son? I can't wait for more! I received an ARC but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

The deadly chocolate tasting ends in flames

Yes I do love this series but come on it's book 10 and we still have no idea why DWC want the properties in town or why they are killing everyone off. It would be great to wrap this up and get onto investigations that are free of the DWC involvement. Frankly am getting bored.
The trip to find her nephew is a dud, he's gone in the wind. However a chocolate tasting sounds just the ticket. Until one of the participants falls down dead from a severe allergy reaction. Her friend is now arrested for murder. Add in unscrupulous buying of property, property with tunnels in their basements, another dead body, a tip off, a new email and a meeting with Anita. Will they get her friend off and the real person arrested? Why do DWC want the properties? What do they need tunnels for? Will the latest tip lead to Calvin?

Great book!!!!!

I love this series!!!!
I when I read these books I feel like I am right there.
Henrietta is helping her friend Sassy with her Chocolate Tasting with Gina and her wine.
All was going well at the start of the tasting and someone Sassy didn't want there shows up, and to her better judgment let him in anyway. Everyone is having a good time until the last and all heck broke lose and Sassy is number one suspect and Henrietta has to help, and what comes out of the investigation is shocking, because it has a connection to past problems the town has been battling.
You won't be disappointed!!!!

This was a fun read with many twists and turns. The relationship between the characters are great and was especially happy for Olivia’s great news. Clementine was a basket case. Ralph and Henri make a great couple and I hope their relationship continues to blossom. The book kept my interest and the whodunit is still unknown. Must read to find out.

I really enjoyed reading this book. From the opening page the scene is rapidly set for the murder with a very unique “weapon.” Henrietta and her boyfriend Ralph, with the help of their talented employees, have their hands full trying to solve this mystery and get her friend Sassy out of jail. Woven amongst this story, the author has woven a side mystery of trying to locate a missing nephew and one involving a company called The Deep Water Corporation. More to come in the next installment!

Another great read

I picked this series on a whim and haven’t been disappointed in a single book . Henrietta is a strong single woman who doesn’t mind being single. She is smart ,savvy, a successful business women and a loyal compassionate friend. The stories are well written with great characters and well thought out stories that can be read alone but are better as a whole. I am looking forward to the next book with anticipation.

Enjoy Henri’s tenacity and strength. Really love this series and its characters. Enjoy the interaction between Henri and Ralph and hope she finally lets him further into her life. On the sleuthing front they make an awesome pair. Can they solve the puzzle of why DWC wants their small town? Grab a copy of the book and see what clues you can find. It will be a very enjoyable experience.

Henrietta helps find the guilty party in the death of a participant of Sassy’s tasting at her shop. There are other puzzling details that she is working on at the same time, but they haven’t been explained yet - namely her nephew’s reasons for hiding from his family and what the DWC is up to.

I enjoy the characters in this series, but like some others, I am getting rather bored with the DWC. Just tell us what they want to do so Henrietta and Clementine can stop them from changing the town? Can they ever find Calvin? Will they save Sassy from being arrested for murder? You will have to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.

Oh my! DWC is becoming a gigantic problem! I wonder what their end game is. I truly hope Henrietta and Ralph can solve that dilemma! I hope Henrietta finds her nephew, Calvin. I was happy that Sassy was absolved of Mark’s murder. Her Hot Chocolate truffles sounded delicious! I loved reading this book and have definitely enjoyed the entire series so far!

Henri helps to find the killer after someone is killed at Sassy's tasting. She is also still trying to solve why her nephew is hiding from family. It would be nice if the reasons DWC is after all the land would be explained.

When a man drops dead at a chocolate tasting, Henrietta’s friend is arrested for murder. Convinced the police aren’t digging deep enough to find the true culprit m Henrietta sets her team in motion. This was a fun cozy mystery, with lots of red herrings. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.

A chocolate tasting gone wrong!

It is always fun to catch up with Henrietta and the folks in Hearts Grove.
Henrietta and Ralph go to chocolate tasting, where
Sassy has new treats to tempt the taste buds. Sadly, one guest at the tasting dies after the final chocolate. Surely, he is just allergic, right?

Smile! 😊

This was a good one, folks. Henrietta and Ralph went to the Chocolate Tasting at Sassy’s Chocolate shop. Unfortunately there was some trouble and someone didn’t make it home. Sassy was arrested for murder and the hunt began for clues. Other stories woven in from previous events make reading this exciting…Olivia and Scott and Calvin. The chase is on!
