Aspects #2

Justice/Loneliness

Rate this book
Peace was all well and good, but what was it truly worth without freedom?
Ever since the Aspect of Love had learned how to control the creatures that roamed the Wastelands, the Aspects hadn't been in any real danger. Love had been so worried about her life as an Aspect leading to her death, she was more than happy with that peace.

But when the Aspect of Loneliness falls pregnant, those who run the Aspect Program want to exercise the same control as ever: to stop any Aspect from being compromised.

With no threat, Love doesn't see why Loneliness has to give up her child, so she strikes a deal with those in charge: the Aspects will be allowed their freedom if they can reclaim an entire city from the creatures.

But when Love's powers start to fail, what originally seems like a simple task may be more dangerous than anticipated. Especially when a strange, masked woman starts appearing, with the same powers as Love.

Justice/Loneliness is the second book in the Aspects YA sci-fi series.

L.C. Mawson

Some say she's an ancient creature of nightmare that was unleashed from beneath the ocean, come to devour the souls of men. Others say that she's a cosmic being from the beyond the stars that has taken corporeal form to learn our ways for some unknown end...

In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...

The only contact she has with humanity is publishing books every so often, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.

Love's relationship with Hate has been struggling lately, as Hate is keeping a secret from Love. When Hate finally reveals that she does not feel like their relationship is working, Love loses control of her powers. Now, she must quickly learn to draw her love from another source in order to make her powers work again.

Loneliness is pregnant with Justice's baby. Because this could potentially jeopardize the missions of the Aspects, the Program wants her to abort her child. However, Loneliness wants to be a mother desperately and neither of them wants to get rid of their child. Love decides to strike up a deal with the program, saying that if the Aspects regain a city from the control of the monsters that Loneliness will be able to keep and raise her baby. However, with Love losing her powers, this long mission will prove more difficult than originally thought.

I enjoyed Love finding her independence and learning how to harness her powers by her own will in this novel. I love the love between Hate and Love, but I definitely want to see them both grow as individuals. I also enjoyed the storyline with a pregnant character and seeing how the characters treated Justice, as she is a transgender woman who is now the second mother of the new child. I always love how inclusive Mawson's books are, and this book was no different.

One of my favorite parts of this story was definitely learning about the strange masked woman with Love's powers. I won't spoil anything, but this arc of the story definitely did not disappoint.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a diverse and inclusive action-adventure sci-fi novel with a cast of strong characters.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Justice/Loneliness - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This chapter in L.C. Mawson's excellent Aspects series is a slight misnomer, as it also continues to develop the relationship between Love and Hate, as well as revealing just how much control the so-called Program have over the Aspects in their domain.

Loneliness is expecting a baby with Justice and the pressure is on her to abort it or at the very least give it up for adoption. Love feels very strongly that this is outrageous and that it should be a matter of choice for the parents-to-be, so she makes a bargain with the Program which will help the whole community...but that doesn't work out quite as smoothly as she'd hoped.

The road to true love is never straight, they say and Love's distracted from completing her end of the deal by events from a completely unexpected direction.

Curious to learn how she works out this dilemma and about how relationships can have more complicated results than anyone would ever believe?

Justice Loneliness by LC Mawson
This is the second instalment in the Aspects series, and centres around the Aspects' attempt to reclaim a whole new city (a ruined London!) from the creatures in a bid to convince Bennett to allow a pregnant Loneliness to be allowed to keep the baby (something never allowed normally). The secondary theme is also Love's battle to reclaim her powers when they falter, and the discovery of a mysterious woman in the city who seems to share her powers - who is she, and what does she want?
This is an excellent book, well written and keeping you engaged with plenty of action, emotional twists and turns, mystery and adventure. I love this series, and this instalment doesn't disappoint. I'd definitely recommend it to all LC Mawson fans, anyone who likes futuristic fantasy, and anyone who enjoyed book 1 - and you'd definitely need to read book 1 for this to make sense. Now I can't wait to read book 3 and find out what happens to them all next!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

This book has all the same characters as in Aspects Book 1, with the characters of Justice and Loneliness brought into the fold.

Lots more interactions with dragons and also contact with the Rena - will this be as problematic and dangerous as the first ?

Your favourite characters are developed a lot more and we see relationships growing and struggling, with all the side effects these have on their powers as Aspects.

The Aspects try to reclaim part of the wastelands outside the city and this leads to all sorts - no spoilers here !

A great read and looking forward to another x

This is another fun book with a very innovative concept and works building. It’s a great continuation of the story of the Aspect of Love from book 1 (despite the book name, the Aspect of Loneliness isn’t the main focus), and therefore I’d really read that nook first. Don’t worry though, it’s excellent. Adventure, thrills, twists and turns ensue in this well done tale. Good reading and lots of fun, so highly recommended.

This book took what was in book one and expanded the world a lot and brought new characters into the mix while also further developing the other aspects that weren’t focused as much in the first book. The book had a slow start but as soon as I got to around the halfway point, things began to pick up a lot.

Great story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. While the title is Justice/Loneliness, the main character is Love. And Love has a depth of personality which I find to be delightful.

I received this book from the author as an ARC; however, the review is my honest opinion.

Excellent naming in this series!
Love/Hate/Loneliness/Justice/etc. The saga continues in this second book. We see growth in several characters and the story can be a bit intense, especially with a controversial pregnancy. Great pacing as we learn more about this unique world!
