An excerpt from this basketball biography book:
The most dangerous weapon in all of basketball is the three-pointer. Not only does the extra point do a lot to change the course of an entire NBA game, but it is also the most efficient shot. The close-range layups and dunks are still the easiest shots in the NBA, but the three-point shot makes all the difference when it comes to increasing the offensive efficiency of any team or player. Today, almost all of the teams one sees in the NBA rely heavily on the three-pointer. Players have also been shooting the three-pointer more than ever.
However, the NBA was not always reliant on the three-point shot. The shot was first introduced in the professional ranks back in the inaugural 1967-68 season of the American Basketball Association (before it was merged with the NBA). The late ABA commissioner George Mikan, arguably the NBA's first superstar, said that they introduced the three-point shot so that smaller players will have a competitive advantage against bigger players.
However, though there are still super teams in today's era, the style has become more reliant on overall team play instead of just putting the ball in the hands of the team's three All-Stars. We saw the Golden State Warriors playing that way since they won the NBA title in 2015. Though they had many stars on their team, they relied more on spacing and ball movement to win games. This led to the current pace-and-space era where teams rely more on increasing the tempo of the game while spacing the floor with four or more shooters.
While the three-pointer was a way for the ABA to compete with the NBA in terms of excitement, fans were not used to seeing players bombing away from 25 feet.
