I loved being back with Sabine and Malek and of course the amazing Pixie Blossom ! This started so strongly with an epic battle at sea involving Merpeople and it only continues to delight as the couple go on a quest hoping to save their captured friends . Along the way they encounter tribes that are anything but friendly on their journey towards a settlement that has nasty plans for magic users. Getting out alive is going to be a tricky thing but with a deal struck with the Merpeople not to mention a Goddess to appease the couple are still to face their hardest challenge yet. With their time sensitive task our favourite Fae Sabine and her Dragon ally Malek face constant danger but never fear because there's still time for romance !
This started with a bang and constantly surprised me so I can definitely say it was very entertaining and full of surprises. A lot less from the Demons compared to the first book but Blossom more than made up for that, plus who doesn't want to read about Mermaids ?

03-06: I'm going to be completely honest with you here, I was interested in 'By Blood and Magic (The Dragon Portal Book 2)' by Jamie A. Waters when I read the summary, but it was the cover that kept recurring in my thoughts before I started it.
It's crazy.. but it reminded me so much of World of Warcraft's Jaina Proudmoore look from the most recent game expansion, that even though I'm not a huge fan of the character, I was constantly thinking about this title. There's something to be said for familiarity.. I suppose.. and it really is a gorgeous cover.
All that aside, I found myself surprised by exactly how much I loved the story.
"What's your plan, little one?"
"To bring the memory of life to a place of death."
Sabine is the main character, a fae on the run trying to stay ahead of those who would see her dead, and trying to help protect the world she lives in by sealing a dangerous dragon portal. As she flees across the ocean, the ship is viciously attacked and her companion and several crew members are taken hostage. To save them, she forges a pact bound by blood and magic, and the bulk of the story is about the journey she must take to uphold that agreement.
The ship's captain is a.. wow.. steamy, self-sacrificing dragon shifter.. named Malek.. who I can't get enough of (though her companions aren't entiredly trusting of him). His best friend is also captured with the crew, which sets him up to accompany her and the rest of her group in a bid to free the others.
"I don't know what he needs or what we can do for him. Do you think he's hurt?"
"Well, if we can't figure it out, I could always use a pair of dragonskin boots..."
There's a great deal of traveling throughout the adventure and along the way they meet some other interesting characters. Sabine is a really sweet, kind natured woman who seems to constantly be adding to her own worries, by trying to look out for others. And Malek is a great match for that. He's powerful, if a bit possessive (but really, he makes that work) and at times he's stubborn, but so is she.
Truthfully, they both seem to have more inner conflict than conflict between each other and it's kind of a nice change. At times, he's a little too easy going.. too perfect. He's the most rational male on the planet and she's every bit his equal in that regard as well. If it weren't for all the chaos going on around them, they might also be the most boring couple ever to exist. But there's plenty of drama to keep things spicy and their chemistry is undeniable from the get-go.
"In a word, she was exquisite. And he was well and truly screwed."
I really enjoyed the author's perspective on Faerie and those connected with it. This is also one of the few times I've seen a story with so many wide ranging fantasy races that felt natural. It didn't feel like they were just fodder being paraded out in front of the reader to add words to the page. They were important parts of the people of this world and they each had their roles to play.
My favorite supporting character had to be Blossom. She's this adorable pixie that's part of Sabine's traveling group and if I'm being honest, she reminded me of a less thirsty version of Lehabah from Crescent City. She's super cute, feisty as can be, and very funny.. one hilarious little drama queen. She's also capable of much greater things than pixies typically are in most fantasy stories I've read.
"Blossom's eyes widened, and she shoved the entire piece of cake in her mouth. Her cheeks bulged as she chewed. She held out her hand in a silent gesture for more.."
"I suppose there's no use in telling you to pace yourself..."
"Blossom shook her head and held out both hands, her eyes pleading..."
In fact, the dialogue is definitely punctuated with humor and it doesn't feel overdone at all. There were several times I caught myself laughing aloud.. or smiling in response to something that amused me.
If you're looking for a very solid new series to add to your TBR, this is the one. There's a ton of backstory referenced in this one about her family and her role within the Fae, and something called the Wild Hunt.. which of course made me think of Witcher as well. I'm absolutely going back to get book one, as I'm curious to see if the two are both derived from the folklore of ancient Northern and Central Europe. Plus.. book three is already on the way and I want to be ready!

I absolutely loved reading this book. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. It was a book that I couldn’t put down and I enjoyed reading it.

I was captivated by this book as soon as I started reading it. Sabine is different than the others of her kind, and is willing to help others that are not her kind. I think that is why others like her. She has managed to form some strange alliances in this book and the first book. I love the fact that even though in the past, Fae and dragons were enemies,
Sabine has managed to fall in love with one. Even though Sabine and Malek have not said it, I think those two have fallen in love with each other. I Have loved Blossom from the first time she was introduced in To Kill a Fae. She is even more fun in this book. It seems like the more I reed, the more friends and allies Sabine is making. I am excited to see who and what Sabine makes friends within the next book in this series.

By blood and magic is the second book in a series by author Jamie A. Waters. I read both, the first one was really good, a solid 4.5 stars.
The second book, by blood and magic is one of my rare 5 star books. I really enjoyed this book. It had everything a fantasy book should have, and even threw in more than you would expect. As in the first book, there was Fae, dragons, demons, humans, and pixies. Introduced in this book were also Mer-people and a few other surprises.
The romance was red hot! The chemistry between Sabine and Malek is unimaginable. They often get distracted on their adventures by it, and for the most part it’s very charming.
The story seems to be unfolding pretty naturally, nothing seems forced. Details and whatnot was my big complaint about book one. In the first book it feels like the author is throwing things at you as you need it, and felt somewhat unnatural, and didn’t seem to flow well. It felt like it was rectified in this book.
The settings were eerie and beautiful, and exotic and exciting.
The female is lead character is strong, regal, independent, and everything you want to see in a heroine.
I cried, i laughed, and I fell in love with the Fae city, and their journey. This series has become a must read, and I would highly recommend it!

Wow. This book is even more exciting than the first. I would absolutely love to see this series as a movie. The imagery the author creates is incredible. I feel immersed in theses places. Her descriptions are so vivid and breathtaking. I love the characters and her relationships with them. I also love Sabine's innocence and heart that help shape her. I am so excited to read the next book. Absolutely Incredible detail and fascinating storyline. Well done.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. We start the book with Sabine Bane and Malek sailing away while the city burns. What they didn't plan on was a hostile encounter with the merfolk. A bargain struck and now times a ticken to get what was lost back. A strange encounter in Kavga leaves Sabine in shock and with new allies. The desert is no place for a fae especially when it leads to a fae pocket full of danger. Sabine and Malek must tread carefully especially in hostile conditions. Good book. Don't want to give away thr juicy bits!

This. Was. Glorious! Rich worldbuilding, magic, otherworldly characters, a time sensitive trade, the story flows effortlessly from the sea voyage to an epic road trip where an escape just in time leads to a desert caravan with time running out. Sabine and Malek will rely on one another to complete the search to make the trade, while growing closer. So very entertaining, I couldn't put it down. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This series continues to intrigue me and suck me in. I adore the characters, especially Blossom. This book felt like a little side quest as we learn more about the magic and the world.

I loved the first book in this series and this second installment was also a great read. Although we’re continuing with Sabine and Malek’s quest to locate the relics that will prevent a war of epic proportion, this book works just as well as a standalone story.
The inclusion of multiple magical creatures, including faeries, dragons, demons, witches, dwarves and, in this book, Merfolk, is what makes this such an enjoyable and addictive series for me. There’s plenty of action and adventure to keep the reader entertained.
I will continue reading until the conclusion of the series.

Wow. Just wow. This intricate story will make your mind revel in this authors mind with every turn of the page. So many layers of amazing, jaw dropping ohhh’s and ahh’s, it’s impossible to keep up! I cannot wait for book three! #greedyfan!

While I didn’t enjoy this novel quite as much as the first book, this was still a solid sequel to the series. It took some unexpected turns on our journey to the dwarven city, which were fun and engaging overall.
However, I am concerned with the search of the artifacts that are needed to close the portal. Malek only had a lead for 2 artifacts (one they’ve already acquired – the cup) and one that the dwarves may have. But there are so many more artifacts to find, and they seem to quickly be running out of time to find them. This is the main overarching premise of the entire series. Find the artifacts, re-seal the portal, save the world. And yet, I’m worried about how the plotline with the artifacts is playing out. By the end of this book, Malek and Sabine can add finding artifact #2 to their cache (the pearl). However, this seems like a really convenient plot device. I hated that this was the goddess’ “condition” to helping the tree/saving the Fae city. Despite their quest (which the merpeople were aware of), I couldn’t see the mer ever willingly offering up the pearl to Sabine and Malek on their own. In fact, I expected the group to add another cohort from the merpeople to their group to act as a delegate (like perhaps Pearl herself). I didn’t expect them to hand it over so easily, and I think that the fact that they did so solely because Sabine helped some merpeople that they didn’t even know and hadn’t been aware of just seemed too easy.
Plus, there are only 3 more books to the series, so only gaining 1 artifact per novel isn’t really an option. The timeline of the artifacts needs to be sped up a little bit if they do, in fact, hope to save the world (keeping in mind that they only have a lead for 1 more of them to begin with).
To go along with this theme, I’m still not completely thrilled with how side-tracked our characters became within this story. To save their friends, they made a deal with the mer to find Pearl (the lover of one of their leaders). Even though this was apparently a good thing in the end, it seemed to cause Sabine and Malek to go on a winding goose chase that only happened to all work out in the end. While it didn’t feel like a waste of time, exactly, it felt like the author was getting a bit off track with her plot and I wanted to snap her back into staying focused.
One of the reasons this seemed to be a choice for the author was to help Sabine and Malek get some alone time along their journey. I can’t say I hated this completely, but honestly, with how much more they had going on and the interruptions from Blossom anyway, it was a bit anti-climatic in a sense. Yes, Sabine and Malek finally take a plunge, but it felt rushed, cut short, and immediately afterwards, their problems get brought back up without either of them hardly having time to take a breath.
I’m also concerned by how much Sabine keeps changing her bond with Malek. At the end of this novel, we find out exactly how dangerous this could end up being and how steep the consequences may turn out to be. It’s also frustrating that everyone else around them seems more aware of the fact that a serious “blood bond” (i.e. mate bond?) has been established between the pair, than either of them understand. If Sabine didn’t know she was making Malek her “mate,” then that’s a pretty huge issue – especially when it affects her magic and there’s something wrong with it now. If she didn’t know exactly what she was doing, she shouldn’t have done it, and the situation that caused this entire thing just didn’t seem severe enough to warrant it.
I continue to like Sabine, but I think that this is a good example of her self-sacrificing nature that will come back to bite her. For someone who’s also lived a life where sure, she’s made connections (and possibly even helped an orphan or two along the way), Sabine has kept herself pretty isolated from forming deep attachments to others. While I love that Malek was an exception to that rule and he’s somehow weaseled his way into her affections, I’m getting annoyed with how many others Sabine is pledging her loyalty to after such a quick introduction. It’s like she has a hero complex and needs to save everyone. This may be admirable in theory, but Sabine (who’s kind of on the run and in hiding from her family and will be hunted down by the Wild Hunt again soon), isn’t in a practical position to make this offer to every Tom, Dick, and Harry she meets. This isn’t stopping her within this story, but it makes the novel seem a little less credible at the end of the day.
Malek is almost glaringly perfect. This makes him one of the easiest people to fall in love with, but there were times when he/his relationship with Sabine (and their communication with one another) seem to be skirting the edges of too perfect. While I love that the conflict happening in the book is focused more on outside forces vs an internal conflict between the couple, I think that just a little conflict or frustration with one another is a bit necessary to make this seem realistic. Malek is a dragon and Sabine is a fae. They come from totally different worlds and cultures with different customs and magic. You’re seriously telling me there’s never any accidental miscommunication or lack of understanding between the two? As you’re “in” the story, this point falls away, but every time their differences are brought up – and the unpromising future between them – I get reminded of this once again. I read one review that said that without the drama and chaos surrounding the two of them, they’d be the most boring couple imaginable, and I kind of see their point. Even though this makes them sweet and lovable, and you can’t help but root for them, the flawlessness doesn’t seem real.
Still, their relationship is endearing and I’m happy with the progression it’s made throughout this story.

Do you know that feeling of watching a movie in your head when reading? It usually takes me a few chapters in a book to get to that point, in some it never gets as "clear". This time it was as if I had pressed "Play" the moment I opened the book, even without remembering much of the previous one.
Sabine, Malek and their companions left Akros on Malek's ship, heading for the Dwarven city.
In the middle of the ocean they are attacked by the Merfolk, aquatic creatures similar to faeries (like mermaids). Who capture much of the crew, including Esme and Levin, Sabine and Malek's best friends respectively.
Sabine manages to make a deal with the Merfolk to rescue her friends, which consists of finding Pearl, a Merfolk who disappeared in the desert in her human form.
As if this mission was not complex enough, things in Karga, the city where they disembark, are upside down. Annually they carry out a "burning festival" in which the city is completely closed and a purge of all demonic magic is carried out. This year they have advanced the date and it has become even more dangerous as they now have a magic detector.
Tired and having used much of their magic, Sabine, Malek and Blossom must find a way to complete their mission, without dying in the attempt. But, above all, without falling in love (Although they should already give up on this, they already fell in love 🤣).
And of course, the Wild Hunt is still trying to murder Sabine…
I completely fell in love with the first book in this series. I can't understand how I missed the release of the second installment, but here we are.
Honestly I had almost no memories of the first part. I just remembered how much I liked it. Thank god Jamie does an excellent job putting up little reminders that allow you to follow the story without rereading. Except for Sabine's connection to the goddess Lachlina. I really didn't remember this and had to reread the end of the first one 😑.
Like the first book, the story grabs you from the beginning and you start to have a million questions, which are answered veeeery slowly.
We get to know Sabine so much better and I love her. This time we get to know a little more about her past, along with the real reason for her escape from Faerie. She has a horrible past, but she never allowed that to define her. She is different from all other Fae, she does not feel superior to any race, and she cares about everyone. Which is ironic because she is probably the most powerful of them.
I find it very sad that Sabine, with Malek, knows for the first time what it is for someone to love you without expecting anything in return. The fact that Malek doesn't want her magic puzzles her and makes her fall even more for him.
I love Malek because he is very strong and overprotective, yet he knows that he cannot protect Sabine against her will, and he respects that. I find it very funny that they spend the whole book saying "damn, I will fall in love with him / her" when it is clear that they are totally damned already 😂. They are an adorable couple, but with impressive sexual tension even just by looking at each other. We know that Sabine is a Fae and Malek a dragon, and both races are mortal enemies. However, Sabine begins to trust Malek and their relationship evolves into more than just attraction.
However, the best character ever is definitely Blossom. The little pixie who proves to be a loyal friend and hilarious companion, as well as an ally full of surprising resources.
My only critic is that I felt some very repetitive phrases, like that they were falling in love, or Malek putting Sabine's hair behind her ear. But this is just for criticizing something.
And … again I overdid this post but it's worth it. I highly recommend this series. One thing I really like is that these books don't end in cliff-hangers. Each one is a part of an incredible story with a medieval air and full of magic.

Do you know that feeling of watching a movie in your head when reading? It usually takes me a few chapters in a book to get to that point, in some it never gets as "clear". This time it was as if I had pressed "Play" the moment I opened the book, even without remembering much of the previous one.
Sabine, Malek and their companions left Akros on Malek's ship, heading for the Dwarven city.
In the middle of the ocean they are attacked by the Merfolk, aquatic creatures similar to faeries (like mermaids). Who capture much of the crew, including Esme and Levin, Sabine and Malek's best friends respectively.
Her magic was ancient in origin, for the Fae were the first children of the gods. Her power was the same as what originally shaped this world, creating forests and lakes where none previously existed. While the Merfolk were the caretakers of the sea, the Fae would always be the victors in commanding the heavens and earth to obey.
Sabine manages to make a deal with the Merfolk to rescue her friends, which consists of finding Pearl, a Merfolk who disappeared in the desert in her human form.
As if this mission was not complex enough, things in Karga, the city where they disembark, are upside down. Annually they carry out a "burning festival" in which the city is completely closed and a purge of all demonic magic is carried out. This year they have advanced the date and it has become even more dangerous as they now have a magic detector.
Tired and having used much of their magic, Sabine, Malek and Blossom must find a way to complete their mission, without dying in the attempt. But, above all, without falling in love (Although they should already give up on this, they already fell in love 🤣).
Her hand started vibrating, and she laughed in delight. "Are you purring?"
Bane snorted and walked away, circling the dragon and studying him from all sides. "A dragon who purrs. Fearsome, indeed."
And of course, the Wild Hunt is still trying to murder Sabine…
I completely fell in love with the first book in this series. I can't understand how I missed the release of the second installment, but here we are.
Honestly I had almost no memories of the first part. I just remembered how much I liked it. Thank god Jamie does an excellent job putting up little reminders that allow you to follow the story without rereading. Except for Sabine's connection to the goddess Lachlina. I really didn't remember this and had to reread the end of the first one 😑.
Like the first book, the story grabs you from the beginning and you start to have a million questions, which are answered veeeery slowly.
We get to know Sabine so much better and I love her. This time we get to know a little more about her past, along with the real reason for her escape from Faerie. She has a horrible past, but she never allowed that to define her. She is different from all other Fae, she does not feel superior to any race, and she cares about everyone. Which is ironic because she is probably the most powerful of them.
You're not like the rest of the Fae," Blossom said and patted Sabine's hair. "That's why we follow you, Sabine. You're different."
I find it very sad that Sabine, with Malek, knows for the first time what it is for someone to love you without expecting anything in return. The fact that Malek doesn't want her magic puzzles her and makes her fall even more for him.
Sabine nodded. She managed a weak smile and brushed away her tears. "I'm sorry. I normally don't fall apart like this."
Malek arched his brow. "In the short time we've known each other, you've proven to be one of the strongest people I've ever met. Most would have given up after experiencing a fraction of the challenges you've faced." He chuckled. "I don't think anyone would begrudge you a few tears, and if so, to hell with them. I'd like to see them try to walk in your footsteps."

I had mixed feelings about this book. Much like the last book, I had trouble getting into it. The beginning and ending parts were strong but the middle very much dragged on at times and I just couldn't focus on it. Despite that, I could tell that there was a large amount of detail put into the world and that things were carefully crafted. It just really wasn't the book for me unfortunately.

Este no ha sido un mal libro, pero sí me ha decepcionado un poco (creo que es porque no tenía ninguna expectativa del primero, y ese acabo sorprendiéndome). Creo que la autora abuso un poco del plot estilo cajas chinas, y el final se sintió como que solo funcionaba porque lo escribió para que así fuera. Igual pienso seguir la saga, aunque ya no me emociona tanto como antes.

Before I start my review I have to apologize to BookSirens and the author for the delay of this review. I had some problems with my eyesight that made me choose books to read with my eyes really difficult, so I have been choosing to only listen to audiobooks.

This book starts pretty much where the first one ended.
Sabine, Malek, Blossom, Esmelle, Levin, Bane and the crew of Malek's ship are sailing towards Dwarven city, following a clue that an artifact will be there, when the ship is attacked by Merfolk.
Esmelle, Levin and some of the crew end up being taken prisoner by the Merfolk and in return the Merfolk tell them that Sabine and Malek must find Pearl, one of the Merfolk, within a week.
Without much information about where Pearl might be and with a ship to fix Malek, Sabine and Blossom travel to Karga to get possible clues to Pearl's whereabouts and to get supplies. But Karga sees them as outsiders and a ritual that could put their lives in danger looms.
Fighting against time to save their friends and over a series of obstacles, they try their best not to fail, while the attraction and feelings between Malek and Sabine become more and more intense.
WOW, is the first thing that comes to my mind after reading this book. There is no doubt that I loved the first book, but this one was even better.
As with the first book the two things that captivated me the most were the characters and the wealth of magical beings. The settings were also quite interesting, I must say more so than in the first book.
Malek is just fantastic, I adore him with all my heart and the way he loves and cares for Sabine fills my heart. The interactions between him and Blossom were pretty fun too.
Sabine is the queen of the whole thing, she is so powerful and so empathetic to everyone and always tries to help even if it puts her life at risk. You can tell that unlike Malek she's more reticent to open up, but I guess that's understandable, especially given everything she's been through. I was very sad to hear how she ran away from Faerie.
Blossom was given an even bigger spotlight in this book and I loved it. She is just hilarious and I want her as a friend. Without her, things would be 100X more complicated.
Throughout the book we meet several different people, but unfortunately not for very long. There is one group of people in particular, that they traveled with for a very short period of time, that sparked a great deal of interest. It would be quite interesting to see them again in future books.
There is also a character who appeared very little, but who will probably become a more prominent character in the next book. Curious to see how her dynamic will be with the whole group.
Pearl even though she didn't show up until the end, was a character that I liked.
One of the things that made me a little bit sad, was that I expected to see more of Esmelle and Levin, and also the demons, which ended up not happening. And there was no news about Dax, will we know more in the next book?
I will definitely continue this series of books and follow the group through their adventures, which I am sure will be many.
I wonder how there aren't more people talking about these books. I will recommend them to everyone!

This is book two of the Dragon Portal series and sees Sabine and Malek and their friends having escaped from Akros and now travelling on his ship, seeking another artifact needed to hopefully close the Portal and avoid a war between the gods and the various fae and supernatural beings. She is accompanied by Bane, a demon, and this causes problems when their ship is attacked by the merfolk. Loads of the crew and both Sabine and Malek’s best friends are taken and a deal is made to get them back.
To do so, Sabine and Malek must find a merwoman called Pearl who has disappeared in the desert wastelands, whilst on an important mission for the merfolk. Malek’s ship needs repairs and Sabine and Malek go to the nearest town to sort out repairs and to get information on Pearl’s possible location, but they have ended up in a town with an evil and perverted tradition, that the locals are bringing forward to ward off what they see as against their beliefs. That tradition calls for burning alive any with magic tendencies! A perversion of an old tradition of blood sacrifice to the old gods. They need to escape this town before their true identities are discovered or they may be the next sacrifice!
Travelling through the desert to find Pearl sees them meeting some more supernatural beings in a touring troupe and they even manage to assist some with their shapeshifting woes. Sabine and Malek are getting closer to each other and the romance is ramping up, whilst Bane is left on the ship.
Events are revealing her Fae magic and this could bring the Hunt back onto her trail again. Her father wants her dead and now her location has been broadcast all over and that means danger is following her closely. She has to decide how much trust she should place in those around her and whether she should follow her heart and think about what she truly wants or to follow the demands of tradition and sacred oaths made years ago. Expectations or love? Finding allies for the fight to close the portal, leads them to some unexpected company and ancient tales of differences and conflict.
Different people will have to come together and forget their differences of old, if their futures are to be saved. Sabine is key to the closing of the dragon portal, but they must track down the ancient relics needed and the pearl of the sea is the next target. Sacrifices need to be made, but not the type some are misrepresenting them as. A great second instalment of the series, giving more adventures for the main characters to experience, but also great danger as well. We get to hear of why massive distrust exists between each different type of being, those on land vs under the sea or up in the skies. Bonding and binding agreements are more important than first thought and could cause problems in the near future. Loving this series and can’t wait for yet more in this series. When his ship is waylaid by hostile Merpeople, Malek has no other choice but to accompany Sabine on her newest mission. The trio stumble upon dark and dangerous secrets in the desert. Will Malek be strong enough to keep Sabine safe?
I found Sabine fascinating! She is a Fae being hunted by her people. I admire how Sabine’s quick to educate others on Fae’s practices. She does not give away their secrets; instead, she imparts helpful ways for non-Faes to protect themselves against her people. I love how Sabine is able to admit her shortcomings and vulnerabilities. She is well aware of her strengths and weaknesses. What I like the most about Sabine is her protectiveness towards her friends. She refuses to allow any of them to suffer. If she could help, even sacrifice something, Sabine will do it to help or protect her friends.
Malek is such a dream. But, then again, I have a thing for dragons! I cannot wait to learn more about his secrets. I adore Malek’s consideration and patience with Sabine. He may be curious about her and her secrets, but he never once pried into her privacy. Instead, Malek patiently waited for Sabine to feel comfortable enough to confide in him.
BY BLOOD AND MAGIC is book two in Jamie A. Waters’ fantasy series, THE DRAGON PORTAL. I have not read the first book, so I have missed a great deal of the world-building and backstory. However, that did not hinder my ability to follow the story’s plot or the characters’ dynamics. The author does a great job of summarizing the important parts of the first story.
I have to say this story totally satisfied my high-fantasy needs. I wish there were more books in this genre. The characters kind of reminds me of my old role playing characters – the diversity of species races and such.

In my humble opinion, second books in a series usually aren't as fabulous as the first. However, in the case of the Dragon Portal series, "By Blood and Magic," the second book, is just as good or better than the first. I have to say, I am just loving this reading adventure.
After barely escaping a ravaged city of Akros during the wild hunt, Sabine, Malek, Esmele, Blossoms and Bane head by ship to the Dwarven city. Unfortunately, Malek's ship is attacked by the Merfolk.
Sabine is struggling to understand what they could have possibly done to offend the underwater people. After several members of the crew and some of Sabine's closest friends are captured, Sabine turns the tide and captures one of the Mermen. They discovered that one of their people,Pearl, have not returned from a trading expedition and if she doesn't return within a week she will lose her ability to return to her sea form. They negotiate a deal to locate her in exchange for the Merfolk releasing the crew and friends.
The ship is badly damage and Malek has to fly it to shore in his dragon form leaving him exhausted. As they set out to locate Pearl, they travel through a desert and dry land much to the dismay of Blossom and Sabine. Yet they locate a underwater spring replenishing their powers and providing a much needed water supply. The city they encounter is steeped in irrational fears and they are about to embark on a "Burning Festival" is which they will shut down the city, gather up anyone they believe who have magical abilities and burn them alive. As Malek and Sabine get a lead on Pearl, they also realize that they need to exit the city as quickly as possible. Prior to leaving, Sabine makes a deal with a seer to rescue her granddaughter from the evil of the city.
When they do manage to escape they come upon a city that was formerly ruled by the Fae. It is sickly and dying. If Sabine, Malek, and Blossom are to rescue Pearl they will have to face numerous dangers and hardship they will threaten everything thing and everybody they care about. This was a non-stop roller coaster ride. The read is laden with so many travails as well as hope. I enjoyed every minute of this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series. The author is a master at weaving intricate plots and delicious characters. Trust me on this one, this is a series you should definitely put on your to read list.

The cool romantic fantasy adventure continues!
Audiobook version: 4 stars overall, 4 stars story, 4 stars narration
I think this second book in the series is better than the first because the story is faster and more interesting. Sabine’s and Malick’s slow-burn romance nicely progresses, and I am happy to report that the romance is not a reverse harem. It is a M/F romance without cheating, although it is more of an epic fantasy adventure than a romance. It could be called a romantasy. I enjoyed the abundant action scenes, magic-working, and fascinating places. It was great getting to know the minor character Blossom as well.
The series must be read in order. The story is told in chapters alternating the perspectives of Sabine and Malick. The romance is mostly low-steam but with one short minimally described bedroom scene. The magic usually involves minor bleeding from a hand, so readers who are very squeamish about blood-letting might not like the series. I am completely invested in the story and characters now, so I am really looking forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the series.
One minor complaint: often when a catastrophe is going on in the book, Sabine and Malick spend long moments thinking about their lust for each other instead of hurrying up and saving people, or Sabine takes overly long discussing her strategy when she should be doing something. I found that if I just stuck with it, the action picked up again in a few minutes.
The narrator Meg Price did a great job again, but I think most listeners will enjoy it better if they speed it up to 1.3x or something like that. She enunciates very well but speaks a bit slowly, so I think it sounds perfect at 1.3x speed. Meg Price is excellent at accents and men’s and women’s voices. She brings an appropriately regal voice to Sabine and brings the book to life.

The narrator Meg Price did a great job again, but I think most listeners will enjoy it better if they speed it up to 1.3x or something like that. She enunciates very well but speaks a bit slowly, so I think it sounds perfect at 1.3x speed. Meg Price is excellent at accents and men’s and women’s voices. She brings an appropriately regal voice to Sabine and brings the book to life.

Seriously, though, this is a wonderful romp around a complex Casablanca-like world. In an author’s email, Jamie Waters mentioned that she pulls ideas from many popular sources, and it does feel a little like a D&D game...a good one. It started with Sabine and her friends stranded at the edge of a desert. Sabine and Malik head off into the desert to find Pearl in order to get their own crew back from the seafolk. Since I am a former belly dancer, I really like the silk road markets, and the closed minds they meet. In a nutshell, the plot actually revolves around this exchange of captives, with the added desperation of ultimately needing objects of power to stop a portal from opening and destroying the world.
Sabine seems to be the ultimate battery source, and she is constantly recharging her battery to give her magic to those who need it, which I found amusing. Malek is the perfect dragon shifter, fighting his need to take her away (like, where? Your boat and people are stranded....) and constantly proving he is not what people expect. And Blossom, the tiny pixy, really shines in this novel. I believe Jamie that Blossom was a favorite. Blossom is the tiny yappy dog that everyone is afraid of until you become friends. She is the voice of a Goddess; she is the spy and the socialite. Woo!
I know epic fantasy is less prevalent nowadays, but sometimes we just want to return to books that include complex world-building, great plots, and rounded characters who all contribute. This story is wonderful, long enough to make you feel like you got a great bargain, and complete in its story arc while still leaving elements to explore in the next novel. I loved it!

This is the second book in the Dragon Portal Series.. I found the second book to be more enjoyable as the plot and character lines were clearer from the start. Even though more characters became involved, a lot of them were from book one, and others such as the Merfolk, who mostly live in the sea, the reader has likely heard of before. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged without losing you as a reader.
Malik continues to search for the powerful magical objects that were used to originally seal the Dragon portal and stop the wars with Sabine at his side. Sabine is the high priestess of the Unseelies as her mother’s heir who had strong Unseelie magic and has Seelie magic from her father. With her powers she can help locate and validate these ancient powerful objects as she has done with the chalice so far.
That is IF they can get to the locations that whispers have hinted at. They have crisis after crisis trying to stop them from getting to the Dwarven city which is rumored to have one or more of the artifacts. The first problem starts right after they launch Malek’s ship through the sea. The Merfolk take great umbrage to this, most specifically due to having a passenger from the Underworld, Bane, and attack the ship from above and below. It looks like they may not make it out of this alive! Several crew members and some of Sabine’s traveling companions are thrown overboard.
Will they be able to stop the Merfolk from attacking long enough to find out why they are doing so and is there anything they can do to receive safe passage?
Can they save their friends and crew members? What do the Merfolk want? Can they find and return what the Merfolk is demanding?
Time to start reading!

This was yet another fantastic installment of Jamie A Waters's series, The Dragon Portal. Book 2 served as more proof that it's probably the best series I've read all year and maybe even last year. I've always been a fan of fantasy, and this true epic fantasy has me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Sabine, Blossom, and Malek are all characters I adore. My heart breaks for Sabine & Malek, knowing that their future together doesn't look promising, but I'm eager to see how it unfolds. I crank up the audio speed because I'm desperate to find out what happens next. Thank The Goddess I already have book 3 ready to go! But I already know I'll be incredibly sad waiting for the subsequent books. I hope Jamie keeps up this series for a while.

Each book is over 400 pages—I believe—though I didn't check them all. On audio, at the normal speed, it's a good 14-15 hours. The author's world-building skills are frickin' amazing! Moreover, the narrator chosen for this series is doing a fantastic job! She embodies all the characters with unique voices, and her performance with all parts-male, female, pixie, and demon roles, were all superb. If I could give this book another 50 stars, I absolutely would. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy with an incredible world and lovable yet distinct characters. I can't wait to see what unfolds in book 3! And it's safe to say I'll be heartbroken when the series concludes. Jamie Waters, in case you happen to read this, please never stop writing Sabine's story! Thanks!

I absolutely loved the story again! This is perfect fantasy, fantasy that transports you into a whole different world until you forget you’re actually lying on your bed reading.
I must say that I liked book 1 a tiiiny bit more, but not by much! (So, this one is probably "only" 4.5 stars instead of 5. lol)
I was positively surprised by the turn the storyline took, because I expected to meet a whole bunch of dwarves in this one, but I loved it! The writing was wonderful and vivid again, I could picture everything perfectly in my head, I loved the new characters we met along the way, enjoyed watching the old characters banter and was entranced by the development in relationships!😍
So many things happened and it felt like this whole epic journey the characters had to venture on, but while there were quite a few detours in this book, the story never lost its silver lining which probably isn’t super easy with a storyline as intricate as this one and with as many things happening as in this book.
And while book 2 doesn't end on as big a cliffhanger as book 1 there are still so many questions that need to be answered. Especially the ending was full of things that left me 😱 😨 😰…
All in all, I don’t want to say much more, because spoilers.🙈
Just let me say this one thing: If you haven’t read book 1 #ToKillAFae yet and you like Fae, dragons, demons and all the supernatural creatures? Go and give it a chance. It’s worth it!!!

I really enjoyed reading this novel. I have not read the first book in the series, and I think it would have helped to have done so in terms of grasping more of the nuances in the references to characters and events from prior to the current story, but it really wasn't that much of a hindrance.
The pacing really stood out as excellent to me, with a lot of action packed in. Description was carefully woven throughout, enhancing rather than slowing the pace.
The world-building was also very well executed. Set in a medieval-age fantasy world involving many Fae races, it was fairly easy to understand the role of magic, the interplay between cultural groups, and how the world politics work. The cultures are particularly well-developed. There is a spiritual system (which seems to be universally accepted). I wish there had been more background on this element, especially how spiritual observances are part of everyday life. (It's possible this was laid out in Book 1).
The character building was also very well executed. Each of the primary characters demonstrated different personality elements. My personal preference would have been for greater complexity in virtually all cases (they read to me as a little bit black and white - I prefer more grey), but this didn't negatively affect my enjoyment of the book. Blossom is a stand-out character and was probably my favourite.
There were a few small errors in the edition that I read, but these didn't interfere with the novel, so they were easy to overlook.
This was a fast read, but a very enjoyable one, and it's a solid entry in the genre. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Yes!!!!!! I've been waiting for this book ever since I read the last sentence in the first one. Gosh...it was SOOOOO worth the wait. Just know in advance that this is NOT a standalone to a series. You'll need to pick up the first one for this to make sense.
Book two picks up right where book one left off, on a boat sailing to collect more artifacts to close the portal. But plans take a detour when the ship is attacked by the sea. Yep, you heard me, the sea. Ok, more like the creatures of the sea, but still, you get the idea. In order to make it to land and save members of the crew and her family, Sabine has no choice but to make a deal with the Merfolk. The deal sends them on an adventure through unknown territory that causes more headache than not. But they meet new people and find more answers along the way. And boy oh boy are the adventures amazing!
If you fell in love with the potential story between Sabine and Malek in the first book, then you'll be very happy with this one. As their connection deepens, so does the magic within both of them. The things these two experience together is more than an experience, it's life changing.
If you're looking for old characters to keep you entertained, don't. The only returning characters that have a "solid" roll are Sabine, Malek and Blossom. Although the other characters make an appearance, you'll most likely have to wait until the next book to see more of their stories. But let's talk about Blossom for a second. I loved the first book in the series 'To Kill a Fae' and I loved this one too. There's never a dull moment as they continue on their quest to find the artifacts to close the portal and save their world.
I loved seeing Malek and Sabine's relationship evolve. They are both powerful by themselves but together they are stronger. They also can't do it themselves as little pixie Blossom helps save the day more than once.
Magical, page turning read. Filled with danger and magic, wonderful world building and relationship building. Doing the right thing isn't always easy but creates powerful allies.

Loved it!!! This is Book 2 in the Dragon Portal series by Jamie A Waters.
We pick up where book 1 left us so you need to read that in order to see where this awesome story has evolved from.
After barely escaping the Wild Hunt. Sabine and the gang leave Akros on Malek’s ship. They need to find the other artefacts to ensure the dragon portal remains sealed. Not long into the voyage across the ocean they are attacked, unprovoked by the True Folk who live in the sea. After capturing some of the gang Sabine, Blossom and Malek are given a mission to locate one of the female true folk who has disappeared. In return they will be reunited with their missing friends but the have little time to complete the task or lose them forever. What an epic and dangerous adventure they must go on.
The world building is truly amazing as are these characters who you really bond with. Sabine is one of my favourite MC’s she is beautiful, kind and kick ass. The bond that’s growing between her and the Faes sworn enemy, Dragon Malek is beautiful and it’s ever growing.
The loyalty Sabine inspires wherever she goes is breathtaking and puts a smile on your face.
We see more of Sabine’s sad back story and how she came to be on the run and it’s heartbreaking. This has all the stress, love and feels and a really great in depth story that can’t be missed. The pace constantly has you on your toes.

This story keeps getting better, more thrilling and utterly intense as the series continues. Sabine's story has captivated me and kept me on the edge of my seat with utter anticipation of what adventures and trouble she is going to to find herself and her amazing crew of unique individuals on next.
Each character in this story is unique and provides an interesting and fascinating view into their world. Sabine seems to run into new challenges with each place she stops on her journey. In this story, other magical races join into the world and continue to build this world up in captivating ways. On their travels Sabine and her friends encounter Merfolk and things don't quite go as planned. Along the way Sabine and Malek forge a bond like no other and their chemistry is intense! Malek still does not have the trust of everyone as they are constantly doubting his motives but Sabine seems to see the real him.
