Scott Wadsworth has spent decades working in the construction industry. He has specialized as a carpenter and blacksmith specifically, but has a thorough knowledge in the business of construction from top to bottom. Scott currently shares his skills and knowledge on his popular You Tube channel Essential Craftsman. With loyal fans and millions of views, Essential Craftsman has been a wonderful way for Scott to share his knowledge and experience and to connect with like minded fans who share an interest in building, creating and participating in a community of craftsmanship.
This book is yet another way for Scott to give needed advice on a subject that can be daunting, emotional and expensive. Choosing a general contractor for your home project (however big or small) can be a complicated process, but Scott does an excellent job breaking it down in a way that reduces risk and helps the reader move forward with confidence.
I used to work for customers (design, not construction) and I can see myself in each of these tips. Interestingly, I forget it all changing sides. As a construction customer, I need a reminder of how to act. This book is extremely helpful in it.
Key points: - Recommendations are still a way to find a contractor - Be positive and respectful - The only leverage is money - Do your due diligence: current customers, license, insurance - Manage your expectations
I don't need to say this for those already familiar with Scott Wadsworth's YouTube channel, "Essential Craftsman," but Scott has a matter-of-fact way of conveying his considerable knowledge and experience in the realm of residential construction. This little book is his way to provide a broad overview of the construction contracting process, it's pitfalls and opportunities, and is well worth the time to read it, especially if you're planning a project of any order of magnitude and have little to no construction background.
I'm building a new residential duplex in Roseburg, Oregon. I came across the author's Essential Craftsman videos. I like this guy for his straight talk and pleased he has made a big effort to share his life's work. It would be fun to meet him someday.
Very succinct book with good information. It’s as good as his YouTube channel. Lots of sound advice on how to go about this task. Look forward to implementing them.
