He's battered and broken...

Targeted by the enemies of a friend, roguish Phillip Wilkes, the Earl of Kent, is nearly killed in a violent attack. Beaten and left for dead, he is rescued and nursed back to health by a beautiful angel that he’s convinced exists only in his dreams. When he recovers and learns his heart was burning for none other than the sister of his closest friend, he knows she is forbidden to him. He runs away from the only woman who has ever shown him true kindness, because who could ever learn to love a broken man?

She believes in the healing power of love...

Ella Lonsdale is cursed when it comes to love. Two overprotective brothers and the entire League of Rogues, are determined to protect her at all costs, even from falling in love. She feels trapped. When a man at death’s door is delivered to her care, she recognizes him as the friend of one of her brothers, and more importantly as the man she secretly loved for years. As her affection deepens for the wounded earl, she envisions a happy future with him. Yet the moment Phillip can walk again, he leaves Ella and breaks her heart.

Can mistletoe work mischief and miracles?

A year later, Ella fears she’ll never find a way back into Phillip’s guarded heart. He becomes a recluse, too afraid to show the world how broken he is. Ella manages to convince Phillip to escort her to a country estate for a Christmas party. Snowed in at a hunting lodge of a friend, Ella finally has a chance to seduce the earl and remind him that broken bodies and broken hearts can be healed.

A 3 or 4-hour audiobook. Simple love story. Hero is grieving over his parents' death and fights his attraction towards the heroine (who's 15 at the time) since he's best friends with her brother. Fast forward a few years, and he gets beat up and is left for dead. Heroine nurses him during a few days of his convalescence. Fast forward a year, H/h meet again, travels to a friend's house for Christmas, shares one bed at an inn, and things heat up. H feels undeserving of heroine due to his leg injury but eventually comes to his senses. Nothing new.

I hope Lauren Smith is not writing any books for this series, The League of Rogues, because I am all caught up! 🥳🎉

Series: Wicked Earls’ Christmas #2 / The League of Rogues #11
Publication Date: 10/1/19
Number of Pages: Novella

I have really been looking forward to the book featuring Phillip Wilkes, Earl of Kent, since we met him in Charles’ book, The Last Wicked Rogue. Parts of this book occur at the same time as Charles’ book, but it also includes segments from before and after that period. Of course, our intrepid heroine is Ella Lonsdale, Charles’ sister. You’ll love Ella! Ella is spunky, loyal and chafing at being under the thumb of two older, overly protective brothers.

Ella first laid eyes on Phillip when she was just fifteen years old and it was love at first sight. She was constant in her love for him through the following years, but he avoided her like the plague. At her come-out ball, he gave her a scorching kiss and that just renewed her love – but again – he avoided her afterward. Her love hasn’t changed and when she finds he’s been beaten almost to death she rushes to her brother Charles’ house to attend to both Phillip and her brother Graham.

While he didn’t realize it, Phillip had been targeted by Hugo, the man who has been targeting the League of Rogues for years. It is just one more way Hugo can cause pain to the Rogues, but it can bring death to Phillip – and it almost does. Phillip does a stupid thing, he bets more on a game of faro and when he loses, there is absolutely no way he can pay the debt. When the winner, Daniel Sheffield, offers to completely forgive his debt if he fights in the Lewis Street Tunnels. Phillip agrees, but Graham tries to talk him out of it. We saw all of this in Charles’ book. Both Graham and Phillip are beaten, but Graham manages to escape and bring help. Graham believes Phillip is dead – and he almost is – but he sends Charles and Ashton Lennox (Wicked Rivals) to recover the body.

After all of her nursing, Phillip still rejects Ella and heads home to his country estate. What will it take to shake some sense into the man? Does he hate her so much? With some unexpected and unwelcome help from a friend, Ella finds out what is going on with Phillip. Can she save him? Well, you’ll just have to read the book to see.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mad About Series Challenge 2023 This book is a novella and a Duel series: League of Rogues and Wicked Earls Club. The H is the Earl of Kent and the h is Ella Humphrey. The Earl was targeted by the dastardly Sir Hugo Waverley to get back at his half brother the Earl of Lonsdale Charles Humphrey whom he blamed for his father’s death. He was nearly beaten to death in an underground fighting ring in lieu of paying off a gambling debt to Derek Sheffield who worked for Sir Hugo in the Home Office. Ella aka Little Bit to her two older brothers Charles (Earl of Lonsdale ) and Graham the best friend of the Earl of Kent. Ella helped nurse the Earl of Kent back to health. She always loved him since she was fifteen. He liked her too but didn’t think he was worthy since he was injured and lame since the beating which left his leg damaged. He thought she could do so much better than him. She was on the market but never met anyone that would erase the Earl of Kent’s memory. There are some shenanigans with her friends the St. Laurent’s ( Audrey & Jonathan) and they leave her stranded at the Earl of Kent’s estate at Christmas on purpose hoping for a romantic outcome. They do become close but he still thinks he can’t be the one to make her happy. She leaves but before going tells him she loves him and that if he truly loves her he will fight for her. He thinks on it a day or two and realizes his life is only complete with her in it and he goes to the Christmas house party at his friend the Earl of Pembroke to win her hand. Short and sweet Christmas romance.

Ella Humphrey has loved Philip Wilkes , the Earl of Kent since she first saw him when she was fifteen, five years later he’s targeted by the enemies of her brother Charles & is nearly killed in a violent attack. I’m so glad Philip survived the beating he received & he certainly deserved his story. I really liked Philip even though he was wallowing in self pity but I loved Ella who had always been coddled because of childhood illnesses, she was strong & desperately loved Philip. The pace was very good & as with all the author’s books the characters are full of depth. I loved their story & even the road to their HEA wasn’t smooth it made for an engrossing read. The only thing to mar my enjoyment & the reason for not giving this lovely book five stars was the behaviour of a friend which I actually found very cruel & totally out of character
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Another great story by Lauren Smith. I loved this one.

Philip Wilkes, the Earl of Kent, gets into a bruising fight and nearly dies. Ella Humphries, his best friend's sister has always been partial to Philip, but he was a friend of her brothers and wasn't taken seriously. However, when he is rescued, she goes to his side. He is unconscious and broken, and prospects of healing are grim. She stays by his side and nurses him back to health and their two hearts gravitate towards each other. But when Philip gains the use of his faculties and his body, he realizes that he has feelings for a woman he can never have; he leaves abruptly and becomes a recluse at his estate.

Ella doesn't give up on Philip, despite all signs given her that a romance is a lost cause. It's the Christmas season--the season for miracles. Perhaps...

The characters and the storyline are so well crafted, they absorb the reader into its pages. The final page only meant I needed more of Philip and Ella.

Falling for the malicious ploy of a villain bent on revenge, the Earl of Kent becomes a casualty in the ongoing feud enacted against his friends. His body scarred and broken, Phillip goes into seclusion and avoids society altogether. His best friend's sister, Ella, has been in love with Phillip since she was a girl of 15 and patiently waits to grow up in order that he may see her as a woman full grown. Only, fate plays its dreadful game, and instead, Phillip does everything he can to avoid her. When Ella's matchmaking friend steps into the fray, she puts Phillip and Ella in a situation where they can no longer avoid the truth. This is a well written and emotive romance but somewhat sad. When Ella eventually reaches a point where she cuts her losses and leaves Phillip to his misery, he has choices to make if he has any hope of future happiness. This Regency romance is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Pain

Funny how pain can change a life. Ella has loved the Earl of Kent since she was 15. Now she’s 20 and considered on the shelf. He was in an almost fatal fight and has hidden himself away from everyone due to pain. Ella ends up at his house and the sparks start to fly. And she decides to make him face his pain and chase her for their mutual happiness. Loved this story

The Earl of Kent 🎄
A sweet regency Christmas romance with characters from the League of Rogues series. Some events are a retelling of the plot of The Last Wicked Rogue but from alternative perspectives. The childhood crush that Ella has on Philip is finally reciprocated as she helps him recover from his injuries in the illegal fighting ring, and brings both of their dreams to life.

This was an entertaining & romantic read that spanned 5 years - it began with the Christmas Season & ended in the Christmas Season.

In the beginning, we find Phillip Wilkes, Earl of Kent, to be a roguish, handsome honorable man. He then beings a slide of gambling & carousing that finds him in debt & is forced to accept a deal from an acquaintance. He will call his debts paid if Phillip fights at the Lewis Street tunnels. Phillip agrees but finds out it is not one match but as many as it takes until he is close to death & the only reason he is saved is because of his friends. Phillip becomes a broken & damaged man - both inside & out & disappears from society to his country estate.

Ella Humphrey is the sister of Charles Humphrey, Earl of Lonsdale & younger brother, Graham Humphrey (who is Phillip's best friend). Ella meets Phillips for the first time when she is 15 yrs. old & Graham brought him home to celebrate Christmas with their family. She falls in love with him instantly & never waivers in her feelings for the years to come & Phillip avoids her at all cost - she is his best friends sister & he does find her enticing. When she has her come out, he gives her a "teaching" kiss & both are affected. Phillip still does not give in to desire, he tells her to be happy & leaves again but the love she has for him only intensifies after the kiss.

Later, Charles rescues Graham & a dying Phillip from the boxing venue & takes them to his home for care. Ella discovers Graham & Phillip have been injured & insists are traveling to Charles' home to see them. Graham will be find but Ella finds Phillip unconscious with a leg broken in two places, broken ribs, other cuts & bruises & an unrecognizable swollen & damaged face. She stays day & night for weeks until he was been able to walk - then he leaves her again to go to his country estate with only a message from her brother telling her thank you for saving him.

Ella will not give up & with some help from her best friend & her husband, they head to Phillip's country estate. Will she be able to convince to come out in to society again? Can she finally find out the reason why he hates her? Why does he keep leaving? All the questions will be answered in this lovely story with a couple you will root for from the beginning.

I highly recommend you read this book to all historical romance readers & it is a great addition to the next group of The Wicked Earl' Club.

Earl of Kent, Book 15 of the Wicked Earls' Club series was about Phillip Wilkes, the Earl of Kent, and Ella Humphrey, daughter of the Earl of Lonsdale and the younger sister to one of Phillip's best friends. When Ella was 15, Phillip spent time with her family for the Christmas holiday and she developed a crush on him. One night the two were playing pool and when she won a game, she requested a kiss for her prize. When Phillip gave her a chaste kiss on the forehead, it crushed her and she ran from the room in tears.
Five years later, Phillip was assaulted and left for dead. He was rescued by Ella's oldest brother, Charles, and Lord Lennox and taken to Charles' home along with Graham, Ella's other brother, who was also injured in the attack. Ella learned of their injuries and went to help take care of them. The reason behind the attack was never fully explained. It was only ever said that it was done by the enemies of a friend...which actually turned out to be the enemies of Charles. Once Phillip recovered enough to get around again, he left without saying goodbye to Ella, and she didn't see him again for another year.
There was heartache, passion, love, romance, angst, drama, humor, pain...the whole gamut of emotions...and love won after all. This was definitely a love story worth keeping; therefore it will join the other Keeper for the Shelves novels.

In love...

I'm rounding the 3.5 up to a 4 cause I liked the ending. And I'm a sucker for "I've always loved you" books.

Ella meets Philip when she's 15 and it's love at first site. He's her brother's best friend. His parents had just died and he was staying with her family for a bit. Later on she has her come out and he kisses her but they still don't get together.

Philip gets into a fight after losing at cards and is almost beaten to death. Ella finds out and nurses him back to healfh and he still thinks he's not good enough for her or her brothers wouldn't approve or something.

Finally Audrey of Lady Society fame puts her in a runious position by leaving her at Philip's estate and driving off. They get together but he still thinks he's not good enough for her. She leaves and he *finally* goes after her. Okay, fine, I'm going down from a 3.5 to a 3. The story didn't go into much detail where it needed it and too much when it didn't (the two of them hanging out at his estate). I enjoyed the book but it could have been better.

Wonderful Read!

The Earl of Kent, book 11 of Lauren Smith’s League of Rogues, and part of the Wicked Earls Club is a wonderful read! I loved Ella and Phillip’s story! She in love with him since she was 15, and he afraid to love as he has lost everything he has ever loved. But he can’t help himself from being attracted to her or wanting to protect her, but after nearly losing his own life he doesn’t feel worthy of her either. Lauren Smith does an amazing job of weaving her stories together. Things that happen in one book, replay in another to tell another characters love story, but not in a way in which you feel that you are reading it twice. Storytelling at its very best! ❤️❤️

Great story!

Kent was injured in a fight in the tunnels, an illegal fight. It as all a set up and his friend Graham and him were beaten. Graham got away and old others that Kent was dead but want them all to go and get his body. Upon finding him, he was still alive. It took a long time for him to recover. Grahams sister Ella loved Kent since she was fifteen. Now at twenty one she still loves him but he refuses to open his heart to love. There is much misunderstandings going on. Read to find a very good story indeed.

This is a fun, entertaining, endearing read. Phillip and Ella are relatable, interesting characters. There is good caretaking scenes in the story. I like the interactions between the characters on page. The friendships and family relationships added dimensions to the story and the characters. I like both the Wicked Earl’s Club and the League of Rogues worlds and it was fun being back in both of them.

The Earl of Kent

This series is really an amazing read. I have read all the ones before, some a second time. I've learned a lot also. Some of these ladies were just as naughty as the Earls. I hope to be able to read some of the other stories connected with these. They make for some very interesting reading.

I've been wondering what happened to the Earl of Kent and this story answered those questions.

A sweet love story of a young girl's first crush, which never ceased to leaver her and continued to grow as she matured. Ella never gave up on Phillip and kept fighting for his love.
