X-Men meets The Walking Dead in Lindsey Pogue’s superpowered survival story, fraught with Crazies, compelling characters, and bursting with raw emotion you can feel deep in your bones.

They survived the Alaskan winter after the Virus devastated the North, but summer in the land of the midnight sun is fraught with a brutality of its own—long, grueling days, mosquito-ridden evenings, and woods with lurking shadows more dangerous than grizzlies. With the discovery of impossible superhuman Abilities, and the looming threat of General Herodson in the lower forty-eight, the Yukon is no longer the refuge it once was.

After deciding to stay in Whitehorse, Elle and Jackson work tirelessly to build a self-sufficient home and protect their newfound family. But, it’s not long before they realize that even if the world as they once knew it is long gone, everyone’s turbulent pasts still linger, and surviving the Virus was only the beginning.

Sophie’s troublesome dreams begin to worsen, and her Ability makes it impossible for the people she cares about to get closer to her, especially Alex. As her friendship with Phil strengthens, and Alex pulls further and further away, she begins to question her reality, and above all else, her sanity.

When whispers of dissension and chaos among the General’s ranks reach Whitehorse, and other survivors begin to amass in Hartley Bay, Alex jumps at the chance to explore the world beyond the group’s safe haven, and leave his bitterness behind. But when alarming news from home reaches him, Alex must face his fears once and for all, or risk losing everything good he’s ever known.

From the author of the bestselling, post-apocalyptic world of The Ending Series, comes a new standalone series of epic adventure set in the virus-ravaged world of The Ending. The Savage North Chronicles contain new characters, locations, and adventures — they can be enjoyed on their own or in conjunction with The Ending Series novels.

Midnight Sun is book two in the Savage North Chronicles by Lindsey Pogue. This series is a spin off of The Ending series but you do not need to have read it to read this. Although I have read it and highly recommend it! This is told in the point of views of Elle, the sort of matriarch of the family this group has formed. And of Alex and Sophie.

This group that has formed a family of sorts, has settled near the town of Whitehorse in the Yukon. They have chosen a farmhouse outside of town for their main home but also a nearby prison that they are reinforcing to use as a safe haven. Because they still live under the threat of the man who started the nightmare they live in, General Herodson, and also, of those that came through the virus not only with the special abilities they now all have, but with a splintered mind whom they refer to as the crazies.

A wolf and a boy

Each of our group struggles to accept the ability they now have, but none struggle as much as Sophie does. When Sophie touches someone, she sees everything, every secret, every bit of pain they have experienced, every dark corner of their mind. Every one in the group is grieving for someone they lost to the virus. But Sophie has to experience all of their grief.

snowy farm in the yukon

Alex has more of a family now with this group than he ever did before the virus. He has so much darkness in his past and he doesn’t want Sophie to see it. He and Sophie have had a connection from the moment they met. But whenever she touches him, she sees everything he is trying not to remember. Alex’s ability is that he can amplify a person’s ability. So not only is Sophie feeling all of his pain, she is feeding it back to him ten fold. It’s too much. So the only answer he has is to push her away.

“We were fuel to a fire I knew could never burn.”

Our group is learning as they go, how to homestead, how to spend the summer months preparing for the unforgiving winter months. They have very limited access to the outside world. They know there are other survivors out there but they have kept themselves isolated for safety. But news does filter in, news of a rebellion, news of the fall of the General’s power, news of other communities. Dare they hope that their world might someday be safer?

As Sophie and Alex struggle with their relationship, the rest of their group has struggles as well. But through it all, they have each other. They love, protect and support one another as any family would, but maybe even more so because of what they have been through together.

Could I love this group any more? No, I couldn’t. I am right there with them ever step of the way through all of their struggles. The next in this series is #2.5, Fading Shadows, which will be Ross and Kat’s story. I can hardly wait to see what happens next!

The deadly reign of the virus is over but the world left to the survivors is full of hardship. They survived their first winter but summer has its own set of challenges. Long, work-filled days readying for the next winter, preparing the town for other survivors, adjusting to their new bodies and changing abilities, and the remaining threat from the General. Elle and Jackson have created a new family in Whitehorse; one bonded by experience and love. Still, their pasts cast shadows over their present days. Their scars run deep. Sophie and Alex can't find their way together with their Abilities. Sophie feels like she's losing herself and Alex keeps distancing himself leaving room for Phil to get closer to Sophie. Beau is struggling with how he thinks his Ability should work and Thea spends most of her time with an imaginary friend since her brother doesn't want her around. Surprise visitors include a familiar but changed face and suspicions soar. Adjusting to their new normal is more difficult than imagined. When a call for a Survivors Summit is made they know they must send representatives. This is what they have been waiting for. But it never goes well when they aren't all together.

Growing pains. Coming of age. Trial and error. Surviving the virus, escaping the crazies, and making it through winter; the worst is over. But that doesn't mean that life is easy. Normal has a different meaning now. New skills must be mastered. Each day brings new challenges. That is the reality of this new world. But the survivors are still human. They still have to face the day to day challenges that humans have always had to face, falling in love, getting rejected, feeling awkward in your own body, not knowing your own mind, survivor's guilt, missing those you lost, and worrying about those you love. That's the real beauty of this book. Life. The story is so well written, the days and nights so detailed, the characters so genuine that you aren't reading, you are experiencing. I felt the heat of the sun and the bite of the mosquito. I had sleepless nights. I agonized over misunderstandings and hurt feelings. I was frustrated and angry with Sophie and Alex, worried over Beau and Thea, cried with Elle. I was in the darkroom, the greenhouse, the prison, and the forest. I went to the Summit and was thrilled to visit with dear friends as my new family met them for the first time. I was horrified and saddened by events but ultimately I was happy. We came so far over the summer as individuals and family and community. I was a part of it all and left a piece of my heart in the Yukon until next time.

The world was forever changed and survivors of the Virus have now survived the harshness of Alaska’s winter. Now the trials of summer, outsiders, gut-wrenching surprises and the threats of a power-crazed General will test them. Is the far north still safe? Can this ragtag group of survivors continue to fight to thrive in the small world they have carved out for themselves, daring to call it home or is it time to join a larger group for protection?

Lindsey Pogue’s MIDNIGHT SUN is the latest addition to a post-apocalyptic series where one false step or one breath of dissention could shred the tentative threads of survival as their growing “superpowers” continue to both strengthen and haunt them. Love, fear and human failings and limitations make for magnetic reading as we are invited to imagine life in this new and raw world.

I couldn’t imagine not being able to touch people without sharing their deepest secrets, but Ms. Pogue’s Sophie makes it terrifyingly realistic. So much happens, so many lives are changed and the boundaries of their bonds are stretched to the limits. Absolutely incredible how much detail has been layered into this tale, enriching each page bringing everything to life! And the emotions? Trust me, they are running in hyper drive.

Fabulous reading! Fabulous characters that breathe life into every action and reaction! Fabulous writing from an author with an amazing imagination!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Lindsey Pogue! This is my honest and voluntary review.

I'm loving this post-apocalyptic series!

We met Elle, Jackson, Sophie, Alex, Thea and Beau in the first book of the series, The Darkest Winter. They have become a family and settled near Whitehorse in the Yukon. They live in a farmhouse outside of town but also have some new members of their group at a nearby prison that they are reinforcing and preparing as a safe haven when/if General Herodson comes for them. They're all learning about and trying to live with their new abilities. Some are having an easier time adapting while others like Sophie, Alex and Beau are struggling. Sophie and Alex have a obvious and deep emotional connection that they don't know how to deal with so they choose to ignore it and keep their distance from each other.

I loved hearing about all the ways they were making this new community a home and their interactions with new and surprise survivors. The crossover to the The Ending Series with Jake and Zoey was great! I loved hearing a little more about that community too. As frustrating as it was sometimes, I really enjoyed seeing the progression of Sophie and Alex's relationship. Really looking forward to the next book in the series!

Loved the first book, giving up on the second one about halfway through. Okay attention to how it's categorized: romance - science fiction. NOT the other way around. While i love the post apocalyptic smart prepper/living off the grid type stuff going on, they're actually not even living off the grid. They've got electricity.

But this is played up as a story about people who gained abilities, and yet some of this is rarely ever touched on for some of the characters, or it feels like I've only heard ever other chapter, missing vital character developments for some. Even with the first book, it was just suddenly understood what some of the characters powers were by mentioning it in passing. Alex boosts others powers? We've barely seen this.

And they mention practicing and training their powers so very rarely, even though they've all come to accept them.

I know that's not all this is about, but nearly all the mention of power is how it torments Sophie, even though she's also practicing (this is the only real case where there's been much mentioned). Instead it's back and forth "i want you, but we're bad for each other". Sooooooo much of it.

Sorry -I'm really intrigued by this world but i have to step away.

We see how our refugees have coped over the winter How they have made preparation to be self-sustaining. How they are coping with their new gifts, new world after the pandemic. We see the characters like Elle, Alex, Sophie, Kat, Beau, Thea, Ross, Burt, and Ross as well as all the others from book one, as well as new characters. There are some cameos of the old characters we loved or loved to hate. from the first series. They got the best news ever! In this book, the news makes it possible for the various pockets of survivors to actually create a summit to meet.
What could the future hold for those who survived all the atrocities they survived both separately and together as a group since the pandemic? Young adults who were forced to grow up too soon to assume the roles of adults in hopes of the survival of the group.
One thing I love about how this author writes, it is so well done, each book could be a stand-alone book. If you read them out of order they still make sense. I just absolutely adore the cast and the world Mrs. Pouge has created and I love the fact that each book has been so well thought out, that it has become a long-running storyline that you can begin at any point. or you can read each facet as a separate series. Now that is how it is done by the very best Authors.

Another great read from Lindsey Pogue! The characters leapt from the page. I was jubilant at their triumphant and devastated by their plight and sorrow. I laughed, I cried, I shruggled in joy and frustration. I even had to put the book in the freezer. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these engaging characters in the complex and often dangerous world after the ending.

I’m sorry but no. I absolutely loved the first book. I love the world and I really liked the characters.
This one? If I wanted a teen romance I’d read YA. This is supposed to be adult. I did not have a good time with this. I hate love triangles and I don’t even like Sophie and Alex as a couple. They seem like they’d be terrible together considering they apparently don’t know how to talk to eachother.
It’s so unbelievably slow and there’s not even any character development to make up for it.
I’m DNFing at 77%
I really tried but I can’t read anymore.
Also have no idea where you got this was like the walking dead??

I loved it!! This was an amazing continuation from the first book and the novella. It's set about 7 months after the first book. The group is getting into a routine and we can see how the settlement is starting to grow. There are twists you can't see coming, some heartbreak and some new people to get to know. Also, there are some visitors from another series!!! This book had everything you could ask for!

This series just gets better and better!

Seriously...

I couldn't get through it fast enough and yet I wanted to go slow and take my time. These people are more than just characters in a book. They're my friends and I am loving every moment I get to spend with them even when I'm crying.
The next installment can't come soon enough.

This is the second book in the Savage North chronicles. With three character points of view. We get to see how these characters are still adapting after the The Darkest Winter.
The angst between Alex and Sophia is real! They have so much to overcome.
Jackson and Elle are still my favorite! They take care of this group and each other!
Thea and Beau are still cute as ever and we get to see them grow some.
With several new characters that fit right in!
Everything from the world building to character developments, make it like you’re in it with them!

I Absolutely love this series and Lindsey’s writing! If you like a dystopian novel with a twist then you will definitely love this!

And Time Moves On

We have lost a few loved one. However, we have gained some new family members. Through trial and error we have grown in size met some other homestead survivors. And all have grown as individuals as well as grown in our special abilities. The story move on, don't miss the continuing journey.

Another solid, 4-star read! I could almost - ALMOST (how do I write that in italics?) - put the same review up here that I did for book 1. Well-written (and -edited), excellently paced, EXTREMELY emotional (dudess, we don't kill animals, ok?) and highly satisfying would all be underlined if I had a check-list for same (I don't). However, if I had to pick between the two books, I'd probably vote for the first one to win out by a wolf's cold nose.

OH AND PLEASE NOTE: there are still no zombies and I wish to the gods of the tundra everyone could put that part of the promo blurb out of their heads!

But back to my review. There are some simple - at least in my mind - explanations for why this book wasn't quite the gut puncher I found the first one to be. First and foremost, "Midnight Sun" naturally (?) misses the onset of the End of the World (tm pending) and the accompanying horror and shock that we witnessed during the previous chapter. This is a story where the people keep on keeping on and for the most part, that means in large part they've come to accept the new world around them as it is. I, for one, definitely missed the transitions and growth - for better or worse - of so many of the characters, but especially Elle and Jackson who in this chapter are much more responsible, established - and stable even - adults.

Secondly - and this is no true fault of the author, it is after all her privilege in terms of how she chose to tell this tale - but this book leans HEAVILY in the direction of a Young Adult story. It is not Pogue's fault then per se if this has become in the past months one of my least favorite genres. I say that I could have done without a LOT of Alex and Sophie's (and Phil's) wee on again, off again romance, but to give credit where credit is due, Pogue pulls it off smoothly for the most part. Just because there are passages that made ME - aggravated? impatient? self-critical? - didn't mean the story was any worse for wear. And now then that the hormonal dam has been torn down, well...

Keep in mind though that a lot happens in this book as well that can not be called action. You like to plant 'maters and 'taters? Got that. Wanna go fishin'? Got that, too. Battle scenes with guns, grenades, blood and guts? Um, no. There are lovely hints of real tension scattered throughout but with only one truly climatic 'battle scene', well, a lot of adrenaline and excitement is missing - and will continue to be missed by this fan of adventure in all its understood forms and presentation styles.

Still, outstanding prose, a real 'couldn't put it down' flow and more. I shall be continuing for sure!

Beautifully written

I have been a huge fan of the series from the beginning but Midnight Sun was definitely a wonderful experience to read through. As the family builds a home and a life for themselves you get to see (or read) as they truly have grown together and care for another. The setting is well written that I felt experienced the beauty of the land.
All of the main characters are back, with a couple of new ones and some surprises. This book focuses on Alex and Sophie and author's struggles with her powers. It had some turns i didn't expect but was glad to see. We also get to see how the outside world is starting to rebuild and come together.
I received this book as a free ARC in exchange for an honest review, but also purchased it.

What a fun ride this series is!

While Midnight Sun moves slower at the beginning, I appreciate getting to see the world settling into a new normal. It is obvious that Pogue thought through the implications of the Virus and how it would affect functions we take for granted - like internet, running water, and heating. Additionally, I appreciate the pacing of the series as a whole and how much time has been passing; it's just the right amount to be believable but not feel like we've missed out.

Plotwise, the crew works to get Whitehorse into operable condition, hoping to eventually find other survivors to come live in the town. And we may or may not get to meet some new characters in this third book! 👀

My one main qualm is that Sophie and Alex's angst felt drawn out, or circular, or somehow a bit unnecessary. It felt mostly realistic, but be warned that it takes up a majority of this book. I am also SO glad that a certain aspect of their angst resolved without cliches (no spoilers, but that "aspect" might be a guy named Phil).

I am getting to the point where I trust Lindsey Pogue with my whole reader heart. The twists and surprises always do just that - surprise me. I love this world she created (I mean, not the crazies and not that like 80% of the world died, but... you know what I mean), and I can't wait to continue the series to see what happens next!

In Midnight Sun I love the development of the story, the suspense, the way Ms. Pogue seems to be able to make the characters come alive. The tension between Sophie and Alex and Phil is palatable. Elle and Jackson becoming like parents is believable. The interaction with the somewhat minor characters only added to my enjoyment of the book. And I liked the way she tied the story to the earlier books in the series. It works for me.

Recieved this book as an ARC for an honest review.

Such a great sequel to Thr Darkest Winter.
In Midnight Sun we see our main crew establish new roots in the Yukon with a few other survivors. Together, they all learn how they have changed and adapt to their new life.
However, danger still lurks and concerns about the lower 48 seem so realistic. I love how the kids are starting to get a better understanding of themselves and that Elle and Jackson have taken it upon themselves the work together to raise the kids.
The new characters we meet are interesting and fun. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and can't wait for the next installment.
Review is short and sweet y'all, because you just need to read it for yourself.

I am enjoying this series, but this book didn't do it for me as much as the others so far. The whole Sophie and Alex love story was a bit annoyingly drawn out. It's one of those situations when they really could have just had some conversations and actually listened instead of waiting to talk. I'll probably read the next one, but if it's another romance angle, I'm out. There is too much that is interesting in this world to waste on making those things the main storylines.

Another great installment. I was happy to see this “family” again, settling in in their adoptive home of Whitehorse. Unexpected visitors and even a meetup with some old familiar characters were great. I could have done with less teen angst, but maybe that’s because I am a high school teacher! Twist at the end is something else!

Loved it! Another great continuation to The Ending series. I loved reading it for various POV. Lots of them made me laugh, lots made my heart break. It was so nice to see familiar faces from the first series. Hopefully we will get to see more. I,liked seeing how Jackson and Elle and the rest were surviving without any of the crazies getting in the way! Looking forward to the next book!

The first book was great...then this one turned into a love triangle angsty teen romance. The reason I picked up the first book was because it WASN'T YA. And what about the powers everyone was trying Not to use them and some like Alex's were never expanded on. I peeked ahead to the next book and it seems to be more of the same teen drama. Unfortunately I will not be continuing with this series.

I tried … this was … just so dull. After loving books 1 and 2, of course I had to read on. This book … I read about half of it, realized I’d missed it all, due to it being unable to hold my attention and therefore me, spontaneously tuning out entire bits … and so I re-started from the beginning. Re-listened to the first half of it and realized … it wasn’t missing things that was the problem—it was just that dull.

Sadly, my attention span won’t allow me to continue on in the series. I may explore other series from this author but … that’ll be if the feeling of dread at the thought of it lightens up, as this experience seems to have left me unable to stomach the thought for the moment.

Nothing against the writing or world-building skills in general—I think it was just too slow-paced for me. This is normally my favorite genre.

No star-rating since I DNF’d it.

Audio:
Overall sound quality is good, male narrator is good. Female narrator sounds like AI, not good. She also alternated between pronouncing Jenny as both “Jenny” and sometimes “Ginny” , which obviously are 2 different names. It’s a serious disservice to the author, IMO, to make a mistake like this, especially 3 books into a series.

4 stars for overall sound quality and for the male narrator.
1 star for the female robot “narrator”.

*If I could stand to listen to robotic-narration, I wouldn’t need true audiobooks—I could simply purchase **much cheaper** eBook format and have Siri read to me. Unacceptable.

Since the first book in this series I have loved these characters and have been waiting for the next book to come out for a while. Midnight Sun does not disappoint. As the newly formed family tries to make a life in this new, crazy world, you get to see the different relationships forming, everyone adapting to their new roles, secondary characters become clearer and more relevant and not to mentioned the awesome plot twists thrown at you. You do feel right in the middle of it all. Lindsey does an amazing job with all the different POVs and we also get some fascinating new characters added to the mix. Alex and Sophie have a big focus in this book, you are just as touched and frustrated as they are, as they learn to manage their powers and feelings. The world might have ended, but hormones are still raging.

It was a good read once you get past the slower stuff at the vary beginning. I liked the conflict between Alex, Sophie, and Phil. Having Sophie’s dreams be the main cause of all the drama it’s a interesting way to represent someone who can’t make up there mind and is trying to convince themselves they want something more then they actually do. I love Beau more then anything in this book he is so adorable but also so relatable feeling like you should be farther along in something or better at something then you already are. Thea wasn’t in the book that much but I think that was needed to tell the story they were going for. The addition of Kay and the other one (if you know you know) was super impactful and really touched on the heaviness of a death and that you never know how much time you have with the people you love.

Another great book in the Savage North Chronicles! This one is more YA romance than the last but still really good! In this book you really focus on Sophie and Alex. Navigating the world after almost everyone was wiped out, trying to control your new abilities has to be insanely difficult. Also add in trying to figure out feelings for someone you want to be more than a friends with on top of it all. That is what this book is taking you thru. Many emotions, disappointment, anger, and the struggle to understand one another.
