Read this one to my y6/7 class for Waitangi Day. They found the comic book style engaging and it was nice to have this information presented as a cohesive story rather than isolated facts. I think it was still a bit complex for this age group as we had to break it down a whole lot, but combined with other resources it was valuable. It presents a balanced and honest account.

A full-colour graphic novel (comic book) about Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi. It is a dual-language flip book written in both Maori and English language.

There is a reason why inequality and racism are such big issues in NZ and it stems from our history. If like me, you weren’t taught any or very little of our history while you were at school, then this book is a great starting point to explain our Declaration of Independence, Treaty of Waitangi and the broken promises that followed.

Read this book!!👍🏼

This is exactly what I needed to get started on learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Simple, clear language, great illustrations and a good snapshot of the basic historical process/issues. Not just for kids - this book works to get everyone understanding a complicated issue!

Awesome short history of Te Tiriti. Easy to understand and follow, beautifully illustrated and written in both English and Te Reo Maori.

Loved it!

Great intro to the Te Tiriti o Waitangi & The Treaty of Waitangi. I really like that this book is bilingual too. Part 2 was particularly interesting to compare between the two languages - even though I'm still very much a beginner at Te Reo Maori, I felt I gleaned quite a lot.
I highly recommend giving this book (graphic novel) a read.

I purchased and read this book for the same reason Toby put it together - as Pakeha, I didn’t feel my knowledge and understanding of the Treaty was sufficient, they didn’t cover it well enough in my schooling. Even though it’s aimed at a younger audience than me, I didn’t feel it was too diluted to not be engaging for me. I’ll be keeping and referring to this going forward.

Have rated this as a stand-alone piece, rather than against other ratings in my collection. I feel it’s a great book to have for Pakeha book shelves.

Excellent introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it differs from the Treaty of Waitangi. While it's aimed at level 4 of the curriculum, it's a great intro for anyone about why the Treaty is important and the consequences of the differing versions.

This is a good education resource for teenagers and anyone who wants to learn what really happened to New Zealand. Only a few pages long but quite to the point. Had to give it 5/5. Enjoy I did.

Excellent delivery system and clear points, though a bit of explanation needed for younger kids.

Simple, to the point explanation of New Zealand's founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, aimed at young (well, up to about aged 12) children, in graphic novel form.

Form: physical

I love how engaging and easy to understand this graphic novel/picture book is! Perfect for anyone of any age and also for people with heaps or very little knowledge about Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This is such an asset as a New Zealander and I can’t wait to reread and recommend this to anyone and everyone!

A really great starting point at learning about the Treaty vs Te Tiri from an accessible platform. I really appreciate that it was also offered in Te Reo.

“Te Tiriti o Waitangi / The Treaty of Waitangi” by Toby Morris
Excellent bi-lingual flip-book.
Perhaps a little unfair in its portrayal of missionaries but the limited space meant it could not accommodate the complete details and nuances.
Essential resource ****
