Malcolm Jones is a dream thief; one of twelve powerful immortals set upon the world at the dawn of time for a single purpose: control the erratic nature of man’s free will.
But Malcolm has failed. He failed to erase the entirety of a dark, twisted seed of a dream that will blossom into an unholy idea, damming the world. Now, armed only with his target’s name and disconnected fragments of humanity’s impending doom, Malcolm must rely upon his instincts, his fellow dream thieves, and the aid of a few trusted humans to prevent this future from playing out.
Will he stop it in time? Find out in The Dream Thief, book one in the Hands of Time series.
This story is about immortal dream thieves who have lived as long as humans have existed. Their purpose is to steal dreams from people before they become reality. Meet Malcolm who is a dream thief. He has lived for millennia. He has made a lot of money through the years. He loves to correct beautiful things such as original art and fantastic cars. He also loves old, rare books and owns several bookstores around the world. His favorite is in Chicago and that's where he calls home. His manager is a young woman named Debbie, who reminds him of a hippie from her dress. Malcolm answers alarms regarding dreams which transport him into bedrooms around the world. He has to steal the dream and then get out fast to avoid being caught. In the story, another of the thieves transports to the home base where all their records are kept. However he is in terrible physical condition. As the thieves gather around his bedside they discuss what to do. Malcolm is sent to the regeneration spot for this particular thief which happens to be Easter Island. While waiting for him to arrive, Malcolm receives an urgent mission to transport to a home. He tries to delay it because of the need to see to his friend but cannot stop the process. As a result he arrives later than he should have and is interrupted during the stealing. This results in an altercation with the dreamers husband and small child. He has to flee after only getting half of the information. This failure could result in the end of the human species. Malcolm enlists his human manager and tells her about his life. She tries to have him committed. Because of his super human strength, he escapes. Somehow he has to stop the woman whose dream he failed to remove. This is the beginning of the real story and is very intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. The only criticism I have is that the author focuses too much on his lack of human attributes. He is not human and that is the basis of the book.
What if you could stop trouble in the world before it starts? Big trouble? That’s the job of the dream thieves. They steal dreams to keep things running smoothly.
What if they fail, then what? Malcolm and his colleagues find out what happens when half a dream is stolen. Can they set things straight before it’s too late?
Leann Rettell takes us on a uniquely imaginative journey of adventure and personal growth. Action-oriented and working against the clock, this story also weaves in a healthy side of emotional exploration as Malcom wrestles with his own inner longings to be fully human and what that means.
3.5 stars = I liked it. This was different. Immortals who steal dreams in order to prevent events in the dreamer's waking future which would have dire consequences. My only real nit with this is This is available through Kindle Unlimited.
Are they dreams or nightmares? If the dream leads to the end of the world wouldn't it be a nightmare? Makes you wonder ... maybe your dream is someone else's nightmare? Supernatural beings are tryimg to stop the evil before the humans figure it out.
I haven't read anything like this before and I read several books a month. Mystery, romance, fantasy, mayhem and a plot hat keeps rolling and pulling you in. Please check the is book out and then give the sequel a try. You won't regret it.
The book kept me interested and engaged all throughout, which is a big deal because I am not usually into this genre. I think the plot is unique, but please tell me if I'm wrong. The action was good and fast-paced. But at my age and experience, what got me really interested is the whole philosophical take centering around the idea that our smallest, most innocent action, may have great make or break consequences.
The book ended with a lot of open loops and unanswered questions. Some of the characters were not fully developed. The strange event that was an important part of the story was not fully explained. The transformation that Malcolm underwent after the whole trouble with the scientist just happened without any reason revealed. I guess that ought to be answered in subsequent books.
The Dream Thief is the first book in the Hands of Time series. This means that even though the book gave us something that resembles an ending, that's not really the case. A reader will (hopefully) only completely understand everything by reading the whole series.
While I wished that the author would present and explain things better, I also find that everything she has written is relevant. There are no wasted pages, and I like that in a book.
The prose was written in a simple and straightforward language. So, if you're looking for a literary fiction piece or philosophical stuff that will make you stop and think, this may not be for you. But if you're looking for an entertaining and intriguing read, you may find this book enjoyable. But be prepared to read the whole series if you're not one for open endings and cliffhangers.
It has the right amount of smut, but it’s a bit unique, bordering weird, as dream thieves feel the urge but don't have instruments for the purpose. LOL! Thus, this is only recommended for mature readers who are into or OK with mature content.
Full disclosure - I was the developmental editor on the book.
Malcolm had a dream to steal in order to save the world. Only when the scientist woke too early with him in the private bedroom during the early dawn hours, he got half a dream and a whole bunch of trouble.
