In times of disaster people turn to God. But what if they no longer believe in themselves?
Cardiff is recovering from a catastrophe. Torchwood find themselves up against the Disaster Recovery Committee – instead of putting the city back on its feet, it seems to be preparing for something worse. There’s a conspiracy to be exposed, a mythical monster becomes real, fights are breaking out over drinking water, and Jack Harkness is getting ready for the end of the world.
6.9 A Mother’s Son by Alexandria Riley Cardiff has suffered a catastrophic flood. Dozens are still missing. Survivors fill camps across the city. An inquiry has been set up to find out what happened. Bethan’s come to the city looking for answers. Her son is among the missing, and no-one seems to want to help her find him. It’s starting to look like there’s a cover-up. What is Torchwood? Can it really be behind it?
6.10 ScrapeJane by Robin Bell ScrapeJane is a myth. A monster made up by an urban explorer. A monster that’s caught on. A monster with forums, with merch, with a book deal. A monster that people have started to believe in.
A monster that’s started killing.
6.11 Day Zero by Tim Foley They’ve been warning about it for ages. Poisonous mould in the water supply. But it’s finally got out of hand. It’s day zero – the day Cardiff runs out of drinking water. As people start fighting over the last remaining supplies, the Disaster Recovery Committee takes drastic action. Because there’s one place that still has clean water. And Torchwood will do anything to stop them from getting it.
6.12 Thoughts and Prayers by James Goss Cardiff lies broken. Torchwood’s leaders are either arrested or dead. In a storage unit something forgotten has been reborn. And underneath the city, a terrible impossibility has been built.
The streets are filled with the prayers of the desperate. Because everyone knows - The end of the world is nigh.
This is the conclusion not only to this imagined future season of the TV show but to the longer arc of the audio “Torchwood Continued” storyline. Although there is a clear conclusion, the ending is left open a little, presumably in case Big Finish wanted to write more about this incarnation of the team. Sadly, though, subsequent revelations about Barrowman’s behaviour make any full reunion of this specific cast now seem unlikely. So, while we might see some characters return individually, this is probably all we’re going to get for this incarnation of the team. Fortunately, it’s a good send-off.
A Mother’s Son – The first episode kicks off some time after the cliffhanger ending of the previous box set as Cardiff tries to come to terms with what just happened. Unusually, the story is told from the perspective of a woman tragically affected by the events. Most of the regular characters do show up, of course, popping in and out of the story as its protagonist tries to uncover the truth, but the focus isn’t on them. This makes a surprisingly effective way of bridging between the relevant parts of the larger arc, showing us how the outside world perceives what is happening, with echoes of government responses to real-world disasters. The campaigning central character successfully brings a human heart to a story that nonetheless still has aliens and SF technology in it. 4 stars.
Scrape Jane – Now we’re over to Colchester and Ng as they investigate an obviously fictional urban legend that seems nonetheless to be real. This, it turns out, is the follow-up to “Cardiff Unknown”, the insert story in the previous box set. That didn’t work so well on its own and is really an overly long teaser for this. Still, now we get the pay-off, and it works well as a violent horror story with an interesting opponent. Initially seeming like an unrelated side-story, it all ties into the larger arc and makes good use of both of its leads, here working without the backup of the rest of the group. 4.5 stars.
Day Zero – Returning to the theme of the first episode, the situation in Cardiff continues to get worse (you’d think that by now, the Red Cross or somebody would be organising humanitarian relief convoys just to get people out, but apparently not). Initially focussing on the human side of events, the SF elements become more significant in the second half, which ties in more closely to the main arc. With the various members of the team caught up in different aspects of the ongoing crisis, there’s a sense of widescale societal breakdown and a feeling that things have changed some of the central characters for the worse. It’s all really a part of the rising tension leading into the final episode, but it does also work on its own. 4 stars.
Thoughts and Prayers – The final episode is suitably apocalyptic, putting the future of the Earth on the line. It brings all the main characters together again and wraps up a lot of what’s been going on in the Torchwood audios for some time. Inevitably, not everyone gets as much to do as one might like, but some have already had their climactic moment in earlier episodes and can easily cede ground to those who have not. It’s dramatic and world-shaking in a way that Torchwood often isn’t, but, if you’re going to go out, go out with a bang. 5 stars.
6.10 ScrapeJane by Robin Bell Apparente stand alone con. 6.12 Thoughts and Prayers by James Goss La fine del mondo è (di nuovo) vicina.
So here we are at the end of the road, Torchwood God Among Us is coming to its conclusion, and it is the end of the world. I've loved this series and so far I've agreed with everyone that God Among Us is (so far) the best stuff to come out of the continuation series by Big Finish. I'm very excited to find out what happens next and how it all concludes.
A Mother's Son: Cardiff has suffered a catastrophic flood and hundreds of lives have been lost. Survivors fill up the camps and an inquiry has been put together to find out what happened and who's responsible. Bethan has come to the city to find her missing son, who's presumably dead. But she won't give up until grieving families across the city finally get some answers and that means standing up to Torchwood.
Alexandria Riley has written a fantastic script that makes for a harrowing listen, the ideas here are bleak, the atmosphere is hopeless and the characterization is top-notch. This is a very emotional and gloomy listen that focuses on a character outside of the team and gives us a perspective of what it's like to be someone who's lost a loved one at the hands of Torchwood, even if unintentional. The ending of this one made my jaw drop. Yvonne is a great character, but she can be cold and ruthless!! 9/10
ScrapeJane: Cardiff Unknown is doing a story on the mythical boogeyman of Cardiff, ScrapeJane, but when one of the podcasters is murdered out of the blue it seems the legend might be true after all. Mr. Colchester and Ng have a mystery to solve, faith can be beautiful but also extremely dangerous as well.
I was sad to find out Robin Bell passed away before this audio even came out because it's a bloody good story. They've written an incredible script about faith, creepypastas, and the obsession of fans over the internet. It's a very creepy and atmospheric story with some very gruesome and terrifying scenes. It also has some very interesting scenes to do with Mr. Colchester suffering from an identity crisis after his apparent death. 10/10
Day Zero: It's Day Zero and Cardiff has run out of water, the city predictably is set aflame, and the chaos begins. Sergeant Andy Davison has lost faith in Torchwood and now he's after them.
Tim Foley has written an incredible script that is very bleak and dire in tone, seeing the city burst into chaos over such a simple thing like water and what people are willing to do to get it, is nothing less than disturbing and all so horribly human. We see the worst in people trying to survive, we see faith lost and the start of the end of the world. It's a very atmospheric and grim story that ends on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that implies that nothing will be the same ever again. 10/10
Thoughts and Prayers: Cardiff is broken and Torchwood is gone. The end of the world has arrived and they've run out of time.
James Goss has written an incredible finale that wonderfully ties everything up from this series in a spectacular way. This is a very action-packed and intense finale with some very emotional scenes and a blood-pumping climax. The ending to this one is very sad, but not surprising. Very interested to see what happens next for the crew. 10/10
Mother's Son - 3/5 Mother's Son is a story told from the outsider's view which works very well in this situation showing Cardiff after the Tsunami. It also does a pretty good job to show where everyone (almots everyone) of the main cast is at this point in time and the fallout of Eye Of The Storm. The voice actor of the mother did a really great job! But in general I prefer stories that center around the main characters, so I won't listen to this one very often I guess.
ScrapeJane - 3/5 I liked the general idea of the story and ScrapeJane was definitely very scary. So for the first half of the story I was certainly hooked and it was a good horror story. The second half wasn't so convincing. I really liked the parts about ng's own nightmares, but overall I lost track of the story. I also am not sure how they beat ScrapeJane in the end. Maybe it's not enough sci-fi and too much magic for me.
Day Zero - 4/5 We are back on the main storyline and it really punches you in the guts. The story just gets darker and more hopelessly by the minute. I really like how realistic it all feels... what would happen if the water runs out? I'm sure exactly this. Just look around how humanity fails in so many ways at all around us.
Thoughts & Prayers - 4/5 I had been wondering if BigFinish would manage to bring this epic story to a satisfying end and I have to say they did! It was epic, but still had enough room for all the characters to have great and emotional moments.
Torchwood Gods Among Us Part 3 - 3.125/5 stars I think this set suffers from following such a status quo-changing and ambitious cliffhanger. It's so bleak and there isn't just the fun story that lightens up so that you can be calm for the heavier stuff. There's no Norton to make you laugh and all the characters really seem over it. 6.9 A Mother’s Son by Alexandria Riley - 3.5/5 stars After Cardiff is destroyed in the last boxsets cliffhanger, a mother arrives to find her son who she finds out that he had died during the tsunami. In her quest, she brings down Torchwood. This one was fine. I liked it. 6.10 ScrapeJane by Robin Bell - 3/5 stars A fake Eldrich horror is killing people. Colchester and Ng find a way to stop it. This one was fine. 6.11 Day Zero by Tim Foley - 4/5 stars ACAB. Cardiff is struggling in the aftermath. And now the drinking water is gone. A nasty news crew is sensationalising the situation to make money. Orr starts to make water from their body to try to make everyone happy. 6.12 Thoughts and Prayers by James Goss - 2/5 stars Andy becomes Mike Yates (from Invasion of the Dinosaurs). Um the plot was a bit of a mess and it fizzled out with no real conclusion and left it open for another series which was probably postponed due to a certain Torchwood actor being blacklisted from the BBC.
