Fun and easy read, but that’s not to say I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one to find out what happens next!

Loved the book and I love how Amelia writes.

I debated giving this book one star, as it seriously made me consider stopping reading. There were, however, enough good aspects of the book to save it from the fate of a one-star review.

It has an interesting premise--a tale of three witches who were the illegitimate offspring of the high warlock, who is the leader of the realm. It seems like it would be something that I would find interesting--a paranormal/supernatural/urban fantasy type of book with perhaps some palace intrigue to it as well. And well, if there is a romantic interest for one or more of the main characters, okay.

It failed in all of those marks. To begin with, almost nothing happens in this book. It is very slow moving, with little action whatsoever. There is a lot of thoughts that the main character has, and the same plot points and details keep getting rehashed over and over. There were parts that even seemed extremely clumsy.

At least you do never forget that Ava is a witch, and in a realm with other witches, warlocks, and fae. So that part is good, but again, really very little interaction and story beyond that.

There was very little palace intrigue, though that almost seemed like a major part of the premise of the book--but instead, the author just kept rehashing the concept over and over again that as the illegitimate heir that Ava would be killed--until the last 10-15% of the book.

If you want to make the case that this is a romance novel, unfortunately, it fails in that regard as well, as the love interest for Ava doesn't even show up at all until 2/3 of the way through the book.

DNF - quit at 24%
What a repetitive & so slow flowing story. Seemed like everything had to be done, said, or described -multiple times; or described in minute detail; and a bunch of it didn’t even matter towards the story. By 10%, I was already bored out of my mind, by 15%, I was having trouble just not quitting. I thought maybe when she finally leaves her sisters, things would start hopping & actually pull me into the story enough to care what happens, but it didn’t. No, I won’t be continuing with the series.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Book review of Sisters of the Coven by Amelia Shaw

This book was well written, with interesting characters and a dynamic environment.

The sisters Ava, Bella & Courtney were typical sisters. Ava may have had some Mommy problems as the eldest sister and some Daddy problems because she never knew him.

Their Mother's last words were you will have nothing, don't look for him, stay away the council ... the Assassins.

What will they do with nothing, no house belongings, money? Will Ava let her curiosity win?

We have suspense, drama, life threatening moments, and lies, and now on the run from death. Ava and her three sisters find out everything is an illusion when their mother dies. Now she is on the hunt for her father, but what will she find? What are these rules of the council? Can Travor help her? Will she get the help she needs to survive and save her sisters? ***Fun and easy read***

I liked it because it's not too wordy and it's fast paced and has a few interesting characters.
I didn't liked it that Ava has acted all stupid and swooning all over Tavlor omg I understand they have chemistry but she doesn't need to throw herself up to him *groans* and her meeting her Dad the high warlock is very disappointing *sighs* I was hoping that Matlock was more accepting instead all he worries about is his tittle. Anyway I gave it a 4 star

An enjoyable PNR with a slow romance, well in this book anyhow. This novel sets the foundations for the main female protagonist. The plot itself is different from what I've read before which makes it interesting. My only problem is the title coven isn't used in the book at all. I think something else should have been used.
The author has done a good job fleshing out her characters and world such that she has managed to capture even the prejudice that exists in it between the different species. The narrative stays in the third person which makes it simple to follow the story in it's entirety rather than trying to keep up with different peoples POV. The book finishes on a little bit of a cliff hanger making way for the other two books, and it feels like the author has segmented the stories in the right way to continue the next part of the story.

I received this book from the author via Voracious Readers for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review.

Thrills Spills & Chills in a magical adventure

Adrenaline junkies will LOVE this novel, complete with serious thrills, spills and chills in one jam packed magical adventure.

Ava has lived with her mother and 2 sisters in a secret, hidden magical realm their entire lives. When her mother dies suddenly, the sisters lives fall apart - figuratively as well as literally, since their home was held together by their moms magic and disintegrates.

Ava, as the oldest daughter, foolishly casts caution to the winds and decides to go in search of her magical father though she has been warned to never do so. (This is where (young and naive in this case)fools rush in where angels fear to tread)

Almost as soon as Ava reaches the Magical Realm, she is embroiled in difficulties after she meets her birth father. Ava is crushed when she realized she will not be acknowledged as her father’s daughter.

Her father cannot acknowledge her since it would clearly endanger her life as well as his, but being young and headstrong and initially immature and selfish, Ava didn’t consider any of the possible consequences for her father, herself and potentially her sisters. Unfortunately there is a trial, as a result of Ava’s exposure as the illegitimate child of a royal warlock, and Ava is accused of treason and sentenced to death by the Council of the Magical Realm .

Fortunately there is an u expected intervention - and Ava is unexpectedly rescued and taken away to another hidden realm - while an immediate hunt begins for her so she can be promptly executed. While quite a cliffhanger, this story is exciting stuff!

While Ava as a character is initially immature and selfish, in her lack of thoughtfulness or consideration for her father, sisters or others - she balances that out with her love and devotion for her sisters, her love and caring for her mother (though complicated and tangled, like most of us with frustration and annoyance at her mothers exacting lessons and rigid controlling behavior ) but
as a reader I also hope that as a strong main character we will see Ava develop and mature as she moves through the series.

A fast paced, action packed novel, interesting characters and an absolutely worthwhile read

I will be honest, for the first 10% of the book, it was a bit slow, but it was setting the foundation. After that, hold on! So much happens in what is only a couple of days and in so many ways!

Ava has lived a very sheltered life, VERY! It was just her mother, herself and her two sisters. Yes, there were servants, but when her mother was on her death bed, they found out that everything was created by her mother's magic so when she died, it would all disappear. Only the clothes on the three sister's backs survived. The house, their belongings and even the servants were all created by their mother's magic. Ava had always wanted to find their father in the magic realm, but her mother forbade it. When her mother died and left the girls in the middle of a field in their realm, Ava decided to find their father. She finds out that her father is the High Warlock of the witch's realms. He is like the King of witches, but the Council is who controls all the power. Being that the High Warlock is born into his position and has an arranged marriage since birth, just by being born, Ava will have a death warrant on her head if they ever find out who her father is. She goes to her Aunt, not by blood but by being her mother's friend since childhood, to get answers like who her father is and how to reach him. She then goes to the magic realms and meets him.

Tavlor is the High Warlock's chief of security, best tracker and assassin. He is half-fae and half-witch, which means that everyone dislikes him. The witches are predigested against all other beings, especially half breeds. When he meets Ava, there is an instant attraction between them, even though he doesn't believe that she could like him, he is so used to people's judgment. When he shows her how she will be tested and realizes that she has more power than someone who claims to be half-witch and half-human. He learns that she does care for him when he is allowed to probe her mind. He then tries to protect her from the evil Council witches that want to destroy her.

I can't wait to read the next book to see how things go.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers & Booksprout, to review. This doesn’t affect my opinion of the book, all my thoughts are my own and are honest.

Her mother’s death unleashes her biggest secret…the secret that could destroy them all.

When Ava’s mother passes away, Ava and her sister’s whole life go with her. Left with only the clothes on their backs, it is up to Ava to look after them. Ava decides to go find their Father, the High Warlock and meet him for the first time.

Ava was a relatable character in the way she thinks and acts. She was a typical girl thrown into a world she knew nothing about and really doesn’t know who to trust. I did find it annoying the way she didn’t take seriously what the consequences would be if something happened, and she was still surprised when it came to pass. (I really can’t go into detail because of spoilers).

I found this book to be really slow at the start and it didn’t keep my interest, but it improved around the halfway mark for me. When we were introduced to the love interest, it was a very insta lust situation, but I didn’t mind it, I found that although it was insta it didn’t feel rushed to me. The character, in general, intrigued me and I enjoyed his personality, the small bit we saw of it.

The plot really didn’t have me interested at all until the halfway mark where it picked up a lot and became more exciting. It also felt like the stakes were climbing.

Overall it was a good first book in a series. I look forward to seeing more of Ava and her love interest and how their relationship develops more. I would recommend this book to people who love absent parent storylines and misunderstood brooding, scary-looking males.

Thank you, Amelia Shaw, for the chance to review your book.

I’ve read a few of the authors previous books, and I’m opening it with much anticipation.....

Ava being the eldest of three sisters isn’t impressed with her mother, although she’s dying, her mother is still a formidable figure.
Getting told that she had to look after and protect her younger sisters has Ava annoyed. Why her? They are old enough, but there is something her mother is hiding.....

When your whole world literally falls down around your ears, you would expect to feel fear, wouldn’t you? Ava did, but she also felt free, no longer under the harsh tongue of her mother.

We follow Ava through a minefield.... finding out about her father was the easy part, finding out both herself and her sisters will be hunted and murdered by the council was hard, and why? Her father can only have one heir by his wife chosen by the council, see where this is going?

This book is told in the main characters point of view. I got the impression when first reading the character of Ava, she was a bit of a brat!! But the further you get into the book, Ava shows us why she’s cold, her mother always pushed her, she got the talks, Courtney and Bella got the love. But we see Ava grow, she needs answers to her heritage so she has to be careful where she looks for answers.

So does Ava get to meet her father? And who is Tavlor? And what is the connection that Ava feels with him? Can she trust him?

It ends on a cliffhanger!! So I’m definitely wanting to read the next instalment.

AN ACTION PACKED WHIRLWIND!!!
Heads up! Amelia rocks this baby to it's core, breaking out every challenge, proposition or provocation, seizing the reigns and assuming control, fusing this gem together beautifully. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, turmoil, misgivings, loss, mounting suspense and disastrous situations along with a boatload of secrets while dodging danger, makes for one mind-blowing adventure. Non-stop, action packed, fast paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, page flipping bombshell, keeps you riveted and frozen to your seat. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, kicking this gem into a tempest, blasting it into a hissy with a block busting culmination. The dynamics and presentation in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page your drawn into this web so deep until everything else ceases to exist. The characters are authentic and realistic with depth and qualities that transform into outstanding personalities. Satisfying is an understatement, it doesn't get any better than this. You feel everything the characters feel, become a part of the story instead of on the sidelines. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. Amazing job Amelia, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

Upon the death of her mother, Ava, as the oldest of three sisters, must take on the responsibility of making sure her sisters are kept safe. Their mother had kept them all magically isolated their entire lives. Because her father never knew about them, Ava is eager to find him, the High Warlock of the Magical Realms, the most powerful of the warlocks.

Ava gets her sisters, Courtney and Bella, settled in and safe and starts out for the Magic Realm. She quickly learns that it is difficult to know who can be trusted, especially when she has no knowledge of their world yet. If she can’t find her father, the Counsel of Warlocks will certainly prevent an illegitimate heir from inheriting their power. Her actions eventually put her in danger. Will she be able to escape? Will anyone come to her rescue?

This is a good beginning to a fast-paced story line that will keep the reader’s full attention as the inexperienced Ava dives right into a future she is not prepared for. Will she find her father? Can she trust him to guide her in this new realm? Or will she find survival is difficult without help and without knowing who to trust?

Her mother’s death unleashes her biggest secret…the secret that could destroy them all.
When Ava’s mother dies, the responsibility of her daughters safety falls to the eldest of the three. Heir to the Coven, she must locate the most powerful warlock in all the realms: her father.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.

Our heroine and her two sisters grew up in hiding, but that ends with the death of her mother. To survive, she needs to find her father, but than might also spell their doom. Talk about family issues.

This is book one of a new urban fantasy series. Start here.

This is an excellent start to this urban fantasy series. It takes a moment to set the stage, but that is because it is a well developed and detailed world which requires a little explanation to get the reader prepared for what comes next. And that is a fast paced rollercoaster of a plot that sucks you in and won't let you. I liked the depth of the story and our characters which really made for a solid read. This is the first book and it does end on something of a cliffhanger, so be prepared to move right on to book two. I know I will.

Highly recommended.

Rvcd an advanced reader copy from Booksprout for giving my two cents. We meet Ava and her sisters Bella and Courtney who have been sheltered their whole lives by their mother....until their mom is on her death bed. Ava learns everything, the house clothes food etc have been created by her mom and it will all disappear when she's gone. The next thing the girls know their mother is gone and they are alone in an empty field. But Their mothers spirit went into a necklace that Ava wears. Ava decided to go the magical realm to find a way for her and her sisters to live on. She meets the High Warlock who happens to be their father but hadn't acknowledged them. Ava rushes against time and a sexy half fae half warlock fighter who makes her heart pitter patter. What will Ava do? The trials of the Council will determine her place in society but at what cost.

This was a good book. Right from the beginning, it kept you going in suspense and action, it didn't drag at all. Having said that, it ended in a cliffhanger with no resolution which was a bummer, but understandable when writing a serial. I love Ava, the main character. I can't say that I would be so chill after finding out that my mother had lied to me all of my life and the life I thought I had was nothing more than a parlor trick, but she's able to put that aside and do what she has to in order to provide and protect her younger sisters. If you're looking for a great fast-paced read and don't mind cliffhangers (or maybe have the funds to keep going with the series) then this is definitely a book for you!!.

Ava, Bella and Courtney are sisters and have lived in seclusion most of their lives. Their mother who has magical powers is on her death bed and reveals to Ava that upon her death the magic will disappear. Ava’s father is a powerful warlock living in a different realm. After Ava’s mother dies her and her sisters are left with nothing, Ava goes on a quest to locate her warlock father and find out more about her family. Ava finds out that her father is the High Warlock of the King of Witches whose power is controlled by the Counsel. She meets Tavlor who is half-fae and half witch and the chief of security for the High Warlock. Tavlor has to hid Ava’s power or face the wrath of the powerful Counsel. Tavlor and Ava also start to fall in love with each other. I really enjoyed this paranormal fantasy novel.

Three sisters, Ava, Courtney and Bella lose everything they know the day their mother dies. She kept them cocooned in a false reality with her magic. Ava has a locket that talks to her…it is her mother~ She leaves behind her two sisters and goes searching for their father in the magic realm. He is the High Warlock and to know about them means the Council and his wife will order them killed~ Ava passes the trials she performs too well and is put on trial after learning that their best hunter Tavlor has a strong attraction to her. Now, she has been sentenced to death…who will protect her? How will she escape? What can she do? How will she protect her sisters? The book ends in a cliffhanger…stay tuned for book two~ I received this via Booksprout and am leaving a voluntary review.

Filled with action and magic, this book starts Ava's journey to discover where she came from. The oldest of three sisters, Ava has always wanted to seek out her father, the High Warlock of the Magical Realms, and when her mother dies, she finally has her chance. Making sure her sisters are safe first, she then sets out to the Magic Realm. Little does she know that her mother had very good reasons for isolating them as she did, and soon Ava finds herself not knowing who to trust and in a world she doesn't understand. Fast-paced, this story will keep you glued to the pages to see what happens next. I can't wait to see what happens now that her secret is out!

Imagine living in a mansion which was created by magic and dissolves into nothing when the creator of the mansion dies!

Well this is what happens to Ava and her sisters when her mother dies. They don't know who their father is, they have no home, no possessions, no job and no money. What Ava does have is an undying thirst to find her father and reconnect with the magical world from which she and sisters were hidden.

This is the start of her journey as she finds out all about herself in a world which wants her blood once they know who her father is.

I liked this story. It is about Ava and what happens when her mother dies at the beginning of the book and what happens when she goes to meet her father for the first time. I thought Ava was an interesting character with the typical flaws of a newly adult but the innocence of a child as she grew up isolated. It made me laugh and groan but still root for Ava as she begins to live her life. Of course things are not all peachy and trouble ensues but that was half the fun of the story. I thought it was a good start to a series and I read it in one sitting to see how it would end. Now I need the next book.

I was surprised at how much this held my attention.
When I read the blurb I thought it would just be a little interesting read but the way this author worded this story made it so vivid in my mind that it held my attention strongly right from the start.
I even found myself thinking about it when I was not reading it.
Don't get me wrong, it's just not my usual read.
Less paranormal and gruesome death than I usually go for but still made me wanting to see what the next page held.
I will definitely have to check out this author's other work.

DNF 51%

I don't normally leave reviews on my DNF books but coming off the back of another DNF I'm frustrated!!!
This book had such potential with the outlined storyline but it is so so slow and wayyyy too much detail. Like every tiny minute thing had to be described and then her thoughts had to be described in great detail... it's just so unnecessary, I ended up skipping a few times to just see if it got better!!!
It took half the book for her to get to the magical realm and we are still on day 1 of her journey 🤯🤯

I'm sorry I know how much work goes in to writing and I'm so disappointed as the blurb sounds so good but it just didn't hit the mark for me.

Ava and her sisters live a quiet life with their mom but on her mother’s death bed she admits that their world is nothing but magic and everything will disappear when she dies. Ava leaves her sisters behind as she goes looking for her father in the magic realm. When the truth of her heritage comes out will she survive or will the council sentence her to death? Cliffhanger ending only makes me antsy for the next one.

THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. I went through a long stage of not being focused enough to get into it when I was halfway through but I'm so glad i took that break in-between because after I came back to it I was completely engrossed with it, I finished the whole other half in about 2 hours which is amazing as when I left it I was only getting through a chapter a night, obviously wasn't in the mind frame to appreciate this story before. Worth the wait! And can't wait for the next one, I even completed chapter one of the next book from the preview in this one I was so into it.
