Royalty is her blood, but ruling is her destiny As the only human in a city of vampires and werewolves, Reina Caraway is no stranger to supernatural situations, but waking up in a vineyard with a bloody rose and a dead body at her feet is a little extreme even for her. Unknown bruises on her back only complicate her situation.
With a prophecy on her shoulders fating her to rule over both races in Le Couvènte, Reina has her fair share of pressure. Add her growing supernatural abilities, a stalker murderer able to cover up her scent, two rival vampires training her while competing for her heart, and even the Queen enlisting her aid, it’s just another typical day in Le Couvènte.
A supernatural Phantom of the Opera retelling with academy-highlights, you have the perfect recipe for murder, mystery, romance, and suspense set against the decadent, redwoods and wine-soaked backdrop of Northern California.

FUN FACTS ABOUT EMILY: This list gives you a little peek into the crazy brain of this author. If you find yourself relating to any of these, reach out to me on any of my pages and we shall go forth and bond!
1. I am an extrovert with unlimited psychological energy. (I also stockpile Pinterest memes!) 2. HUGE Enneagram fan, so if you want to connect more, prepare to be asked to take the test so I can better understand you and speak your love language . (My tritype is 847 - which makes me Deadpool's female twin!) 3. My favorite authors on the YA side are Laini Taylor and Susan Dennard. My favorite authors on the adult side include: Amelia Hutchins *Queen*, Pam Godwin *Goddess*, and Elayna Gallea. 4. Up until 2020, I used to write strictly YA. I had a major identity transformation, wrote three books in three months (back to back), found my true VOICE, processed my identity, healed from past trauma, and came out as bisexual. Now, I love writing spicy fantasy romance and bridging the gap between the heterosexual and queer audience by offering them badass heroines taking on the dark alphas and literally *everyone* in my books is queer and polyamorous because #whychoose? It's normalized, it's respected, and it's beautiful! 5. My favorite film is The Princess Bride. 6. I am Disney-obsessed, especially Marvel and the Princess movement. 7. I started writing The Aviary over twelve years ago after a visit to Germany and learning about the Red-Light District. These books were evidence of my sexuality screaming to be let out. 8. My favorite Broadway is The Phantom of the Opera followed closely by The Scarlet Pimpernel. 9. Songs to describe me: Unbreakable by Fireflight, Warrior by Demi Lovato, Ready or Not by Brit Nicole and Lecrae, Speechless by Naomi Scott (Aladdin), Show Yourself by Idina Mendel (Frozen 2), This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, and The Sound of Silence. 10. I’m a mom to two little girls. I fight for a better world for them and for myself.
Very few books can make me cry ... This book is one of those! I laughed in parts and cried in other parts. Some books are so good and so engrossing that, not only are you unable to put them down, but you lose track of time as well. This book is definitely one of those!!! Happiness, sadness, self-discovery, the journey of life, mystery, intrigue ... and so much more! I highly recommend reading this book if you like vampires and werewolves!
Reina's mother and a brother are werewolves, her father and other brother are vampires. Reina is a mix of both, but also a human destined to become .... well what she's destined to become she doesn't know. Through love, tragedy, happiness, sadness, family, friendship, and so much more ... Reina's path follows all of these, and the end is a very surprising twist!
I can't wait to read the next book in the installment! Emily Shore also has another book out entitled "Flesher" that is about zombies. I will be getting that one to read as soon as I can also.
Reina is a conundrum in her family. Her mom and one of her brothers are werewolves and her dad and other brother are vampires. Reina is both and she is also human. There is also a Prophecy about her running the Le Couvente. There are challenges and love triangles and Supernatural Creatures of course. Roseblood is a joy to read so many emotions i was laughing crying and annoyed with some characters i just loved reading this great book. i really cant wait for Silouette to release to continue reading this series
The themes of this story have been done before, have been done to death really, yet Emily does add her own spin on them. If you liked Twilight, you will probably enjoy this story, it has a lot of similarities.
I didn't like Reina, she ALWAYS needed to be saved, she seemed to make really stupid decisions and then allowed her family and friends to make up for them.
The murder story was really only a minor backstory to the rather excessive love triangle (there always seems to be a love triangle). I wanted to see more of that side of the story and less of the immensely boring drivel that spouted from Reina's mouth.
The twist ending was blatantly obvious from fairly early on, which could have been an epic set up to a better twist, but sadly fell well short of that.
I really disliked how every scene seemed to need an in depth description of everyone's clothes and repeated flowery prose about everyone's hair. If this was all removed, the story would probably be 1/4 shorter and better for it.
I mention it below in the things I noticed, but it felt like Emily spent entirely too long browsing through a thesaurus. There were weird word choices all the way through the book. While some readers won't find this a problem, for readers who are aware of things like that, this book will be horrendous. I stumbled through the scenes, often having to stop and re-read passages several times to work out the meaning. Why use an obscure word when a simple one would do the job better? An attempt at poetic writing perhaps?!
Ultimately, I didn't hate the book, but I really didn't enjoy it, the main themes were boring and the characters kind of annoying. I did enjoy the gentle brooding nature of Raoul, and the unabashed fashionista, Heath.
Things I noticed:
5% - weird verb choices. Not wrong, but make me think about the word choice. Makes me drop the story and wonder why she chose that word. Disruptive.
8% - overly flowery writing, gets in the way of the scene. Too many adjectives and adverbs.
12% - 'superfluous legs' what?! Tianna starts off on a stool, then slides off a bench.
13% - 'Skip looked at (delete at) relaxed...'
17% - 'I couldn't simple (simply) sit there...'
18% - '...side of my neck me (delete me) and he covered...'
29% - 'O (Or) how you stand on my driveway...'
37% - whole scene was rushed and kind of pointless except to add info about Raoul.
38% - call him Dad, father, papa or Dr Caraway, not both!!!
43% - I thought she always wore pj bottoms and a tank to bed, not her grandmothers nightie.
45% -'No offense," he glanced at Skip" (remove second ")'
48% - 'I needed (to) let one of them go.'
50% - 'I;d(I'd) never kissed someone when lying...'
52% - very abrupt scene change after the forrest scene.
53% - Raoul called Rin, Rin not Reina.
54% - mum or Aurora, not both
56% - 'I permeated is (his) innermost...' 57% - 'Did I (delete I) his skin just quiver?'
68% - Change from 1st person to 3rd person. She looked up in surprise.
69% - she only wears black when she is happy, so why has she got it on now?
72% - peel, should be peal.
75% - '...good reason to wake up early.. (Delete second fullstop)
77% - '"he's (He) just values his privacy...' 77% - '(")Farewell, dear darling...'
81% - '...he wore s (a) crisp white...'
94% - the wings are already folded, no need to fold them again...
I wanted to and tried really hard to finish or at least get halfway through, but I can't. I was just thrown into this world that I knew nothing about, with no explanation. It was 30 pages in and I wasn’t even sure what the characters looked like. I also wasn’t sure what any of them even were, vampire, werewolf, human?. Except for the MC. we knew she was human because it was pointed out multiple times. But the rest? Those are simple things that weren’t fully clarified until 50 pages in.
Not to mention the author had the perfect opportunity to explain these things sooner in the book when the MC starts talking a little about her parents’ past. What do they look like? What kind of supernatural are they? How do genetics or magic affect that? Things that should be answered sooner.
Also, the word choices…It seemed like the author was trying to be creative and give the typical descriptions used by most people but it didn’t work. Instead of going “Wow that was such a unique way to say that” I went “What the hell did I just read.” It pulled me out of the story too much, which is why I think I quit reading at page 100.
I will say it did start to get better but because of the phrasing and descriptions, I can't right now. I might pick it back up again.
I'd had good reports of this series from friends so decided to give it a try. To be honest I'm glad it was available on Kindle Unlimited, I would be upset if I'd paid for it. First there are typos and errors, in the very first chapter Reina's pajamas magically turn into a nightgown and then back to pajamas. A easy error to make when writing, but something a competent editor should pick up on. I do find mistakes like this distract me while reading. Apart from this though it was very clichéd and remnded me of fan fiction and numerous other YA novels I have read, a beautiful heroine, with an important destiny, two incredibly hot guys both wanting her, her having feelings for both of them. The heroine suddenly going from being the only one with no supernatural powers to actually having unique strong powers...And for some reason the silver blood really annoyed me, it just reminded me of sparkling vampires and a current phase where vampires have to have something a little different in each series. I'm sorry, maybe I'm not the target audience, no longer being a teenager, but I just couldn't get past all the clichés and start to care about the characters.
What it's about: Reina Caraway is in a very peculiar situation. She's a human in a town full of vampires and werewolves. Her own family is supernatural. Her father is a vamp, while her mother is a wolf. Add to that a random prophecy about her ruling Le Couvente … and clearly Reina has a lot to deal with. This is your typical coming-of-age story complete with a love triangle, supernatural creatures and, of course, murder.
Why you should read it: This is an e-book gem because it was fun to read. Yes, sometimes Reina was a little annoying, and yes, there is a love triangle, but Emily really wrote an interesting world and even more interesting and entertaining (and hot in Raoul's and Skip's cases) characters. The e-book price of $2.99 for just under 300 pages makes this a steal and well worth it.
Roseblood was a interesting read! Very different from your normal vamps and weres!
Reina is the only human living in a city of vampires and werewolves. She feel left out and awkward but trys not to show it! Rin did get on my nerves alot through out the book! Through out the book she is in danger, and at every turn is making stupid mastakes. Rin is being chased by two guys! and has to make a choice, and tells one of them they will have to let her go! will she make the right choice? This book has Happiness, sadness and most of love and tragedy! Emily shore has given us a great read and this series can ony grow from here! I am looking forward to the next book!
I was lucky enough to get this book to review from the author, Emily Shore. Awesome story. I totally disagreed with Rin's choice but I loved how it all came together. The characters were great and I loved the story line, the suspense, the mystery of what would happen, made it so hard to put the book down. I look forward to reading the next one.
So she gets to choose between statutory rape (bc she is a minor and he is centuries old) or an abusive and controlling narcissist- got it. But these “YA” or “new adult” books are not for teenagers especially when presented with the choice of men 🙄
So as one that has not opened or even touched a copy of the Twilight series I cannot honestly say if those fans would like this. I can say that this has some elements of Phantom of the Opera but not an overwhelming amount that they scream out at you.
What has this book stand out more than others in this genre is Reina’s family. They are a mix of wolves, vampires and Reina who is human but is she really is what I thought from the beginning. I thought there has to be something about her that makes her special. The story is about Reina and who she is but also the mystery of who is killing and why. We see Reina slowly come into her own as she falls in love or does she. To me I feel that her feelings were more compelled on her than not. She learns to fight and become strong and fierce. She finds out more about a prophecy and those around her and about herself as a whole. I loved the different dynamics of who her brothers were and yet they were all loyal and protective of each other.
The story was interesting and kept you in the moment. There were a lot of twists and turns and not the ending I expected. I did hope for more world building though because you are left a little bit in the dark about the past and the issues between wolves, vampires and humans. The prophecy is talked of a little but could be fleshed out more as well. I did love the story of the mystery of the killings and why was just wow. Reina growing and learning was wonderful as well.
Emily has done it again. She throws us into a world that she paints so perfectly that we believe we are there and then adds in characters that are related and real. Be ready to stay up all night as you laugh, cry and final yell in frustration that book two is not out yet.
This book was so interesting and different from others I’ve read. It does have a lot of editing and proofreading errors but the story is well worth the mistakes. ( I am noting this because some can’t stand these errors ). The story did not go as I saw it and my heart aches at the outcome. I am intrigued enough to consider book 2!
I had to give up. the book lacked character descriptions, back ground and any sense of a story line. Alot of the phrases used made no sense which made me wonder what I had just read.
Maybe if it had been edited properly to make sense I would continue reading but I only made it to chapter 13 and had to stop.
2.5 stars I really wanted to like this book. Its downfall was the love triangle which overshadowed the entire plot. I wish the author focused more on the history and world building of wolves co-existing with vampires. It was still interesting enough to read.
*WARNING: This review may have spoilers, but big ones will be marked*
Thank you Emily, for letting me read and review this book, here is my honest review :)
I'm so so so so so sorry that it has taken me this long to review this, Emily! absolutely loved this book! it's not your average Vampire/Werewolf story. It's so much better and unique! I have to admit, at the start I didn't know which side i was on; Skip's or Raoul's. But i have to say, by the end of it I loved Raoul so much better. Actually, as I was reading, I found two more of my favourite quotes.. and yes Raoul did say both of them :)
"Raoul, it's me. Listen, can you do me a favor?" "Well, I am a little busy at the moment." "Oh." Disappointment flooded my voice. "See, I'm walking around this busy little carnival, and I'm following this beautiful girl around."
“Hearts can be broken, but circles are forever.”
I will now draw circles on my textbooks instead of hearts, next to my non-existent boyfriends name :)
I loved the storyline and all the twists that kept you guessing and wow, were the twists unexpected.
SPOILER! Please, DO NOT read if you haven't read the book!
*A review copy was provided by the author for reviewing purposes* Thank you to Emily Shore!
Reina Caraway is a human in a town where it's all bloodsucker and werewolves. So she can literally become dog bits or the food bank in a second. Her dad is a vampire and her mom is a werewolf. In her whole family, only she is a human. At her school, she sometimes feels like an outsider and/or dessert.
There was a prophecy about her where it says she will rule Le Couvente. Ooh, no pressure.
In this story, she likes two boys (no surprise there, there are always two boys). Skip (Stefan) White and Raoul Kelley. I still have no idea how to pronounce Raoul. I rooted for Raoul :) One look at Skip and I'm all out in mother hen mode. I was like, "Nuh-uh. You get away from my gurl. You don't touch her. You don't look at her. And you better not think about her." Yep.. I was pretty weird, wasn't I?
There were murders happening all around town, but I find that the story wasn't very focused on finding the murder. It was more (actually, too much) around the whole Reina-Skip-Raoul fiasco. Not that I minded, but it would be better if there was more to the whole solving-the-crime thing. At the end, they do find the murder, though. Can't say I'm too surprised who he/she is. I already guessed who it was from the first few chapters :) Either it was a no-brainer or I'm a genius.
Overall, I liked the whole thing. It was a very romantic story. Watching Reina decided between the two boys were kind of hard though :(
Wow, this book really pulled me in two directions...
It's a slightly different take on the Vampires and Werewolves genre whereby the live in their own secret town with just one human - Reina (Rin), the daughter of a rare vampire/ werewolf marriage and the prophesied Queen who will unite the warring species.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I loved a lot of the characters - particularly Raoul BUT I struggled a little with the central character Rin as at certain points I just didn't like her! She is very well drawn and for most of the time she was very easy to engage with, but I just didn't like how she strung along 2 men and didn't really seem to suffer too many qualms about it! It just seemed a bit cold in my opinion.....
I'll certainly read the sequel and wouldn't hesitate to tell people to check this book out as it was an enjoyable and slightly different take on the genre.
