Life was all about forks in the road, Kat's best friend, Em, told her. And Kat knew she hadn't chosen wisely when it came to the forks in her road of life. It seemed each road had led to dismal failures. Her family. Her relationships. All failures. Kat didn't know why Em was still there, especially when Kat rarely took Em's advice. However this time Kat had to admit perhaps Em was right. Renovating the old house she'd inherited gave her a project. It would take her mind off her breakup with Shael, Em said. But going back, facing her past and her bad choices, would that solve anything? She’d also be back within streets of her family home and the parents who had turned her away. Wouldn't it simply make her feel even more depressed? Then Kat phoned a renovation company and her life took another turn. Another fork in her road opened before her and this time she so desperately wanted to make the right choice. She wanted to arrive at the right destination with the right person and she knew getting there was the most important thing she'd ever do.
Lyn Denison was born and still resides in Brisbane, Australia, and attended school in Brisbane and Charters Towers. Before making writing a full-time career, Lyn was a librarian. Apart from reading, Lyn enjoys genealogy, scrapbooking, photography, playing her 12-string guitar and chatting with friends.
This was terrific, best Lyn Denison book I've read yet. So much going on in the end, great characters, great children as part of the mix and a wonderful romance to finish it off.
Kat is our MC, suffering badly after her ten year relationship was ended by Shael, who is also Kat's beloved stepdaughter Meggie's mum. Having inherited an old house from her first love, her bestie Em convinces her to fix it up, either to sell or live in. She makes contact with a small local building firm, where she meets Jess, who has two children of her own and is still living with her ex and running the business together. Meanwhile Kat has been estranged from her own family ever since she came out to them 15 years prior and there are a few skeletons in that closet as well.
So much going on, Kat and Jess and Em and the kids are all great characters. Loved it all. 5 solid stars.
A 2011 book just released on audio with my absolute voice crush - Australian Jenny Walters - doing the narration. The main characters have interesting back stories and while it's insta-love and the brief love scene is super quick, it was enjoyable. Lots of pining and longing here. Some family drama thrown in the mix.
I can't say it's my favorite of Denison's, but I always enjoy her books. Definitely a treat on audio. I could listen to Walters all day long.
And they finally got there! Waoh, this attraction was strung so far, the end was the only fulfilling aspect to the anticipated romantic interlude. The majority of the time the protagonist was self sabotaging, i suppose due to the insecurities she carries. On another level, it is interesting that the author showed family secrets in ways that had me reflecting on how apt the angle of such reflection is....every family has secrets, perhaps some more weighty than others but when you learn of those of others do not be quick to judge for yours might just be much worse. Enjoyed the read in general, it just needed a lot of my patience to not twist the protagonist ears at times 😀
Good read, I liked Kat and Jenn's relationship, and Em is hilarious.
Minor gripe: this could really use a few more chapters and/or a epilog. There are a LOT of unresolved plot bits that could use a wrap up like the stuff with her adopted & bio mother, the ex wife and custody issues and how Kat will fit into Jenn's life...
Getting There is a great story of rebuilding a life, along with your heart. Kat a Jess are delightful, and Em, Kat's best friend, is hysterical!! The epic plot twist came racing around the corner, and I couldn't put this one down.
I enjoyed this book and the characters. I do wish that it was more of a romance than one of self-discovery. I liked the writing by this author and look forward to reading more from them.
Lyn Denison has been a pioneer of the lesbian book since 1990, when she released her first book. She has written over twenty books formerly published by Bella Books. The 90s were not yet very open to lesbianism. but since that date she has been able to write lesbian romances with sexual relations. Many lesbian books today would not be published if some authors had not taken the lead. Read,The Wild One, Gold Fever, among others. Read her books and see the modernity of what she wrote.
