A mysterious detective puts Breeze in a tight spot. Blackmail is the deal of the day, but Breeze isn’t buying. Instead, he accepts a mission to rebuild a marina in Marsh Harbour. He assumes the relocation will keep him out of trouble. His assumption is wrong. He becomes a part of the lives of survivors there, as they work together to reclaim a piece of paradise.
I quite like this series for a bit of light hearted escapism. And I love boats. However, am becoming a little uncomfortable with the casual racism and sexism- raise your game Ed and get with the 21st century. Breeze sails in to a Caribbean island devastated by hurricane damage. He enlists the 2 poor black men just sitting around helplessly in the destroyed Marina to help him rebuild it - they need him to galvanise them into action and do their thinking for them. Their wives who also toil tirelessly are never referred to by name- they are just”the wives”. I wanted their personalities to be developed and know their names -especially as the 2 couples became friends of Breeze and Marie- but it didn’t feel genuine. Breeze intentionally shoots the leader of a group of Haitian intruders, to make a macho point- seriously injuring him then tries to make out he’s the hero of the piece, lies, runs away and is not held to account. The Implication was that the Haiti refugees were sub human because they were illegal immigrants. Hmmmm
Having spent the month of June 2019 in Marsh Harbour, was looking forward to reading this next Breeze adventure. Our first visit to MH in 2009 was aboard our trawler, Everyday, and we stayed at Troy's Harbour View Marina. And of course, after a month there this past summer, all the places and feelings and love of the people, hit home as I read this story.
Thankfully there are many more people like Jimmy and Curtis than a few bad guys like those who came from Mud Town. And I expect that the reinvestment in MH and Abaco will come from Europeans and Americans as they want the Bahamians to have back their island homes and livelihoods.
Beautiful but sad, Abaco Again, thanks to Breeze and Ed's beautiful story telling. But Ed, where the hell is that Starbucks????? :) Hope you got some product placement $$$s for that mention.
Another great read bringing a close up perspective of the damage to the Abacos. Always amazed at how quickly Ed incorporates current events into the story . As a former trawler dweller in the Boca Grande area, I really appreciate his accuracy in describing his venues. Knowing that, I have vicariously visited the different locales described in his stories. Highly recommend all of his writings.
