This book was just what I needed. Over the past three years, I have changed my diet to more of a whole food, non -processed plant based diet to do what I can to get raging, Lupus flare-ups under control. I am definitely not perfect (nor am trying to be) but so far, I have had a complete turn around with lab and therefore symptoms. This lifestyle change all started out for me by "using willpower" which never sustains. But now it is not willpower. It is pure enjoyment of feeling better, not excessively having to go into lab, waiting for doctors to call back to handle results, and cutting/dropping medications. I would say in our culture, my experience is that this is not easy. Pilar Gerasimo is like the biggest cheerleader in so many scientific/common sense ways and is just what I needed to continue to be a Healthy Deviant in an Unhealthy Deviant World. I love her bottom line: "Pissed -Off Body Syndrome is the natural outcome of living in the Unhealthy Default Reality...You cannot cure Pissed-Off Body Syndrome while continuing to piss off your body." Note: she is not claiming a "cure" in sense of disease completely disappears (some can). This is a great read with access to great resources for any of you who want change your health for the better even though it may seem a bit weird or over-the-top to many. Rock on!
I already incorporate a lot of healthy practices in my life but there are more and more days that I struggle to get through bc I feel depleted and exhausted. Intuitively I recognized that I need a calmer launch into my day and time to wind down (plus lots of good sleep). But what I ignored that this book helped put into perspective is I need more breaks throughout the day. This book also helps to understand how our society sets us up to be unhealthy and how we have to be an active participant to counter that.
If you are looking for more of the same from "health and wellness" professionals, you won't find it here. I want to reach out to those of you that read the lowest and highest ratings, because the criticism I'm seeing for this book does not speak to the spirit of what it is all about. You won't find a quick and easy fix to lose 10 lbs. and decrease belly fat, because it bucks the entire system that is telling us that's the only thing you need to do to look good and be healthy. Honestly, the fact that the author encourages you to pick up this book, read it in any way you wish: front-to-back, back-to-front, little bits at a time or by searching a topic from the index, is indicative that this is not a forceful and perscribed program or approach. It is an invitation to explore ourselves and how we have been and are currently operating - and the effects that every aspect of our lives have on our health. It is science-based, thorough, digestible and brilliant.
Admittedly, I would find myself questioning what she said or having a counter-point, and then a few sentences later, you would not only acknowledge that as common thought , but address the social phenomena around it, describe the deep scientific research behind it, and present a simple but profound solution to overcome it. That, in itself, is potentially the most impactful part of this revolution: shedding light on our common human experiences. Now we, the non-experts, have a way to identify the many facets of the unhealthy reality we have found ourselves in, name it and see it for what it is which is so freeing.
As an individual that has had varied relationships with eating, exercise and my emotional health, I appreciate so much that her work addresses a full spectrum. It is truly a book for everyone, wherever we are in our journey. People with any background, medical condition, health status, motivation or lack thereof, can read this and have their eyes opened. I can identify with being over-obsessed and breaking myself, and also being life-threateningly sick and scared of what other people will think. There is a gentle lifting up of our chins from a shameful place that occurs in these pages, and it is incredibly transformative. If you couldn't tell by now....HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting for my dear friend Pilar Gerasimo to write a book that captures her wisdom on how to Optimize our lives and give the world all we’ve got. And… The wait is over! :)

This is probably a book I should not have read while recovering from back surgery as it is wordy and is not very flattering towards the medical system. There are conditions where her advice would not have changed the condition. I was ready to give up but I had won it in the Goodreads Contest and I felt obligated to finish it and give it an honest review.
I think many people are practicing this today. They have just used many books while this is all of it in one place. I disagree with some of what she says, i.e. meal subscription plans. If it is one where you just nuke and eat it, she's right. But if it is one where you have to cut and cook, she's wrong. This plan is one where I learned portion control and if I liked something. If I didn't, I was only throwing one serving out as opposed to 3-5 servings. It is no more expensive than going to a fast food place--maybe McDonald's is $9 for a meal (unless you use the dollar menu) while a meal subscription service is $10 per meal. Also there is a book out by Dr. Will Clowder, The French Don't Get Diet Plan. He talks about eating real food and reading the labels as you shop. Don't buy anything with more than 5 ingredients or unpronounceable ingredients. Real quality food feels you up and tastes better than the processed food. Exercise was just walking, not using your car for a 5 minute trip. I have lost weight using both methods and currently use both methods.
If you haven't come across this method of healthy living, you may be interested in what it says. I found it repetitive to much that is available on the shelves and the internet.
I love this book! The cover is fun and inviting. The book itself has a nice weight and page feel. The pages are wonderfully illustrated and it is easy to read. But the content....oh the content is AMAZING!!!! Seriously everyone should read this book, it's weird and funny and edgy. It won't make you feel bad about your current health or shame you for not having six pack abs! Healthy people, unhealthy people, big/little, old/young...it just doesn't matter who you are, you are sure to learn something valuable from this book. Healthy living is hard in our unhealthy world and The Healthy Deviant book will help you understand why and give you tools to help yourself! If you have been fighting to be healthy and still feel stuck, if you are not healthy but want to get that way, if you are a human living on this unhealthy planet; get this book and start reading. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain! Happy reading.
Good God. This book has so many Capitalized Trademarkable Phrases (TM) that it reads as nothing more than marketing for some website. No nutritional value here.
This is jam-packed with information, some of which was new to me (and I love that)! Basically it’s the concept that if you do what everyone else is doing in our culture, you’ll get the same result - miserable and chronically ill. The ways to deviate from that trajectory may surprise anyone who has been in the health and wellness world for a while, but it’s just so darn intuitive! I loved all the pictures and graphics. I’ll be keeping this on hand to refer to in the future!
The single greatest holistic health and wellness book I’ve ever read or listened to. Gerasimo’s career and life experience, along with her humor and grace, make this book a true lifestyle changer. On top of that, the nutrition, movement, and sleep information in this book cuts through the noise from the media and the government to give us the real stuff. In my humble opinion, anyone who reads this is doing themselves a huge and healthy favor.
Lots of long sentences with many adjectives...that is my first impression. Example sentence: “But untouched, seen up close, and at human scale, that path may have dozens of switchbacks, temporary road closures, detours, construction zones, and confusing cloverleaf exchanges - moments when you are rerouted or thrown off track, or when you just plain lose momentum and find yourself back at a location that seems frustratingly close to where you started.” P260 This is just one sentence on about 2 pages of the same to explain when you decide to change an unhealthy habit, you have ups and downs while reaching that goal. I think this author is a better speaker (you tube videos) than a writer as there are SO MANY adjectives in almost every sentence of this book. It makes for a wordy read. I am giving this to my daughter to read - it does have several aspects of being healthy, or more, what negative things to stop thinking about. There is a toolkit which you can download- journal layout and graphics to help quantify and visualize how your day went as you make changes in your life to be healthy . I won this book in a GoodReads giveaway and was under no obligation to post a review.
I have loved Pilar Gerasimo since I started my subscription to Experience Life magazine years ago. I like her transparent nature, the openness about her background, and how critical the messages in this book are for everyone to read. I enjoy the fun artwork throughout.
I am slightly uncomfortable with a few points made around prescription drugs, although I agree with a lot of it. I sought both a family physician & pediatrician that teach food & exercise first before giving out prescriptions, but there are times in life where prescriptions can manage life-threatening problems (for me, epilepsy) at least short term. There was not one word about the good, only the bad.
I personally feel the book is too wordy. It can be easily cut by 50 pages+ (my book was the 325+ page paperback).
Overall a beautiful book. I will definitely use her tips.
Enjoyed this book a lot. Practical, realistic, simple to understand. Did repeat itself a fair bit but I think that’s useful and necessary, particularly for those of us who really need to hear the information numerous times to really transform.
A finely written book about how to maintain health and vitality in the face of western culture driven by financial gain to take advantage of unhealthy, unaware people. The tools provided are simple, profound, and easy to add to everyday life. If you're looking for recipes, a prescriptive 5-point plan, or how to create wealth, this book is not for you. If you're looking for incremental changes you can make to improve your life and how to make sense of the crazy culture in which we must swim, this book is for you.
Pilar's informal and conversational style make the book easy to read. Imagine yourself and Pilar sitting in Adirondack chairs looking over a field of tall grass among rolling hills while she speaks with you about her journey to healthy deviance, and how you can get started on your journey. She makes suggestions and describes what worked for her. She advises you to start with what's in the book and use the tools provided to discover for yourself the best ways to confront and overcome our Unhealthy Default Reality.
A surprisingly easy read, that keeps things simple and with a touch of humour. This book felt like confirmation of things I'd felt, and of actions I'd started taking to counterbalance social media, productivity culture, and burnout. I've started practicing some of the things in the book, and already it's created more space inside me for contentment, even glow. It's a lifetime practice though, not a quick fix. It's the very antithesis of quick fix. I look forward to discovering the longer term benefits.
I enjoyed parts of this and some of her experiences reflect my own. However, the comparative emphasis on "deviancy" is rather annoying. I wish that would have been downplayed in favor of the other theme, which is figure out what works for you. But the book is set up to position the reader against the norm.
I am skeptical of us v them narratives, even when I basically agree with the position of the "us", as I did with this book, so I found it hard to stay engaged and skimmed the vast majority.
Pilar Gerasimo opened my world to healthier thinking and habits over 15 years ago through the magazine she started called "Experience Life". This book encompasses many of her healthy living practices, sharing with us all how to deviate from the unhealthy default reality we're living in now. The ideas are simple, yet powerful ways to live a healthy life!! I've read the book twice and refer back to it often. I've also completed Pilar's Healthy Deviant U, which is a life changing program.
A unique read about our mind-body life and how in our current environment, we're setup for failure when it comes to having resilience in our health. The book doesn't have all the answers one may expect, but an invitation to an exploratory journey to experiment with one's habits towards a healthy deviant life. There's some small, but mighty experiences to try. Get ready!
I love this book from a lady person standpoint she really explains the problem with the “norm” in the way that the American standard diet and lifestyle has come to be and how to break out of that to encounter a more healthy lifestyle Healthier life choices and even challenge our thoughts about health and wellness
I'd been enjoying the Living Experiment podcast and I didn't vibe with Healthy Deviant so much. This may have been because of its efforts to cover eeeeeeeverything, which is so difficult in itself. The podcast is specific themes, specific experiments to try, skip the ones you're not into, etc etc etc. I'll continue with that for now.
I so appreciate this book. In some ways it’s the book I’d want to write, as it directly reflects my own healing path. To be healthy in our society is to be counter-cultural, and boy is swimming upstream sometimes exhausting. Real wellness does lie in our ability to unplug from the unconscious programming and learn to listen or what our bodies truly need.
Not quite the revolutionary idea the author thinks it is. 😋😅 but still a good reminder not to buy into all the hype the health industry generates in order to sell you the newest diet/superfood/exercise equipment Instagram pushed at you.
This is a great read for anyone who is at the point where they're kind of pissed off at how screwed up things are in our society when it comes to staying healthy. It offers a good change in perspective.
I wrote more notes outside of the book than the book itself! There was so much that confirms what I am doing against the norms to keep healthy. All spot on!
A big picture, fresh approach on wellness and feeling better. I liked it, and I think there are some great ideas. It's probably not for everyone, especially those looking for specific guidelines, but I think that's why it might work for some.
This is the second time I read this great book. Pilar is amazing and I admire her expertise! Great book to read if you’re looking to understand just how unhealthy our society is and ways to overcome challenges to leading a healthy lifestyle.
This book needs to be read again and again. I highlighted and flagged and took notes but I want to go back for me. The author doesn’t tell you how to live your live besides be a deviant. I loved it.
