Savarkar : The True Story of the Father of Hindutva

Rate this book
British collaborator or fiery patriot?

The man behind Gandhi’s murder?

Atheist or Hindu nationalist?

Savarkar is one of the most fascinating men in Indian history. A man who in the first part of his life wanted Hindu–Muslim unity yet later became the father of Hindutva. A man who called for complete independence twenty years before the Congress but didn’t participate in the Quit India movement. A man who in his younger days was friendly with Gandhi but was later seen as the inspiration behind his killing.

Based on Savarkar’s original Marathi papers, accounts of his contemporaries, several of them untranslated from Marathi, court and government records, and newspapers of the time, this new biography is packed with fresh details. Written in a lively, page-turning style, this is a riveting and unbiased account of Savarkar’s life, and the only book you will need to truly understand him.

I remember the day I first heard of Tendulkar. I don't actually remember the first time I heard of Veer Savarkar. Growing up in Mumbai/Thane you saw Savarkar’s photo peer down from the walls of the occasional shop for as long as I remember.

While everyone agreed he was a scholar and a patriot, depending on who you ask he was either extremely respected or extremely reviled. Despite that, I have had very little first-hand perspective on Savarkar to date. I walked into the airport bookstore looking for light fiction but, on a whim, picked up Purandare's book.

In addition to the usual topics, the book throws a lot of light on his prodigious rise as a writer, orator and freedom in the first decade of the last century as well as the "Kaala Paani" torture he suffered in the second. Through these experiences, Purandare outlines the key transitions in Veer Savarkar's life which would go on shape his later world view and differences with Jinnah, Ambedkar and Gandhi.

Despite being ~15 years younger than Gandhi, Savarkar was the de facto face of the Indian resistance much earlier. The differences between them likely still reverberate through Indian politics today. Several aspects of it were fascinating. While I knew that Gandhi was a complete vegetarian, cow worshipping, suspicious of industrialization, I didn't realize Savarkar not only spoke openly against blind reverence for the cow but also pushed for a complete disregard for the caste system; making it a focal point of his energies during his Ratnagiri years. More relevant to their politics are the anecdotes of Gandhi trusting Muslims too much and Savarkar trusting Hindus too much; both to a fault.

Even though the book is over 300 pages and several sentences are head-scratchers, it was surprisingly engrossing and quite a page-turner.

Book: Savarkar: The True Story of the Father of Hindutva
Author: Vaibhav Purandare
Version: First edition
Publishing House: Juggernaut
Rating: 5
Blurb: Savarkar was an Indian independence activist, politician, lawyer, writer and the formulator of the Hindutva philosophy. But most importantly, Savarkar was an unsung hero who isn't properly mentioned in history. The narration involves a lot of political references. Was he a British collaborator or fiery patriot? In the year 1948, Savarkar was named as one of the conspirators behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The 12 chapters are totally captivating and thought-provoking.
My review: I have never read a book that is so well researched, there are 12 chapters in this book. There are an introduction of around 10 new characters in each chapter and thoroughly researched. The way the drama in the book unfolds in the book, really kept me hooked to it. I never knew about such a thought-provoking personality. I definitely recommend this book to all history lovers. Each chapter has a glossary at the end that has a reference from newspapers and it is one of the most well-researched biographies i have ever read.

Great account on Savarkar. Everyone should read it.
This is my 3rd book i read on him. Such a great man he was. Its always good to know that we have many leaders apart from Nehru, Gandhi and Congress. I am sure there are many freedom fighters in each and every state. Hope i come across all those books and get to know about them.

It’s a non fiction book on the legend veer Savarkar as we can rule out from title. I rarely pick non fiction work, but definitely I couldn’t resist the book based on him. It’s a huge book and it took me time to read it thoroughly. It’s difficult to review non fiction work so I will brief it out. I have studied about Veer Savarkar in school so I vaguely remember. And recently when our PM visited Andaman and visited cellular jail, I guess many people remembered the great hero with honour. The book is written in perfect way as the non fiction should be. Like to the points sentences without much of decorations. The author has done thorough research on him, as he has mentioned references at the end of the book. The sequence of his life events are perfect. The book cover his entire life story and majorly author has focused on his service towards the nation. It’s a huge book still I didn’t loose my interest at any point. When I studied about him in social studies, it was so brief, I enjoyed reading about his early life and hardships he suffered. Overall amazing one. I guess everyone must read this. Beautifully written. Looking forward to read more from the same author. A must read!

Its very rare that a book especially a non fiction earns a 5 star review from me. And this is a rare book. The author has done a brilliant job in the research work. Each chapter has a special section of references which clearly shows the amount of research the author has done to put down the life of Savarkar in the 376 pages. It is really impressive and note-worthy.  The narration is perfect with its simple language. I felt i was in the British Raj India while i was reading the book. The book has covered in the perfect sequence his entire life. The author from his note in the beginning itself makes it clear that he wants to show the world the kind of person Sarvakar was and justify his actions. And by the end of the book the author reaches that goal and portrays his life in a way that you understand the kind of man he was and why he was. In a nutshell, the story of his life is well portrayed and a worth your time read.
Recommendation:
I recommend this book to all the people who enjoy reading biographies and the kind of readers who are into historical leaders/Freedom fighters. This is a book that you dont want to miss. It is worth your time and money.

One of best freedom fighting sagas of our nations struggle for independence. True story of an unsung hero. Many hidden facts unknown to us ever, which are unearthed in this book by the writer. Though he believed in Hinduism, he wanted Hindu Muslim unity and not the countries partition at any cost. Swatantra Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was never understood and respected by members of the Indian National Congress. Its his journey through sufferings in abundance, with hard core proof of physical and mental torture by the RAAJ. This book is real Eye Opener of the recent history travelling through little above 100 years and ahead, from British Raaj to Partition and beyond. Question is, why reality was hidden from us since India's independence ? It's worth buying and reading a copy for every Indian

Savarkar is a book based on legend Veer Savarkar and the hardships he faced in real life of which people know less about. I really took my time to finish this book as I didn't really know much about his life and researched each and every fact on "Father of Hindutva" on internet.
🇮
The book is a fruit of author's detailed fact-finding and exploration. It's an all-inclusive biography. Reader will definitely gain enough knowledge about pre-independance era and the freedom struggle. Some readers might not agree with his ideologies or principles but I definitely liked it all. It's about his views on Hinduism and theory of Hindutva. Some left-leaning Indian social scientists have described the Hindutva movement as far-right, adhering to a disputed concept of homogenized majority and cultural hegemony. But I prefer it as a way of life, a quality of being Hindu. He pitched for an inclusive India where all religions have a right to belong and thrive around Hinduism and our overrated "Mahatma" was in agreement to what he said. What happened in his life and what are the key occurrences changed his initial way of thinking? Was he really the man behind Gandhi's murder? Read the book to know more.
🇮
- The book uncovers hidden truths and various incidences occurred in his time.
- The lengthiness of the book doesn't affect the quality of the book.
- Never seen this brilliant narration in in Indian non-fiction before.
- I really liked the notes and bibliography mentioned at the end of the book for reference.
- After exploring deeply about all the facts I would say that it gives a profound knowledge on Savarkar's life. I really appreciate author's heavy research on the book.
- It is really an informative read and a must for everyone. Do not miss reading it.

Book: Savarkar
Author: Vaibhav Purandare
Pages: 376
Publisher: Juggernaut
Format: Paperback
Genre: Non fiction/Biography

Central Idea: The book is based on the life and struggles of Savarkar, who being an important part of independent India, coined the term 'Hindutva' in his own domain. The book is the amalgamation and analysis of historical data and has a good narration of each and every fact in a unique perspective and certainty is assured through the bibliography in the end.

My Take: I found the book to be intriguing as the author has beautifully expressed the whole plot without in a courteous and humble way especially when this is the topic of harsh controversy. The biography, hence, is uncommon yet worth reading. The narration is lucid, easy to comprehend and easier to vividly imagine the past in the present. The writing style is simple yet direct, given the fact, history is not something to be entirely true but sometimes what we consider is what we call the truth.

Critique: The book is a bit biased in opinion especially with the mentioning of political satire in the author's note, given the fact, the facts and figures in newspapers could be the one indulged in their own digits. Sometimes, the accuracy is hidden to present a perspective and then it is monitored again and again with the spectacles of iron, and that is how it turns into the truth. But nonetheless, the book pampers the motivation of biography and what one has to learn from other's life in order to not repeat the same mistakes and actions again.

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟.8/4

P.S. The interview with Lata Mangeshkar also revealed some of the mentioned information in the book as she closely admired Savarkar through her family's interactions!

Savarkar - The true story of The Father of Hindutva is authored by Vaibhav Purandare.
Firstly a big thanks to the author for writing such a nice book on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Veer Savarkar. This book is not a biography of Savarkar but a book which helps readers to understand Savarkar.

Author's note sets the stage for readers what to expect from the book, on what lines/direction we need to see/analyse Savarkar etc. Book covers important phases /events in Savarkar's life, how they affected/ shaped him, his contributions for freedom struggle, his influence on others freedom fighters, his vision, his sacrifices/struggles, his thoughts/definition of Hindutva etc. Book also clears many misconception about Savarkar.
As it is based on real events the book is very interesting and has lot of insightful information about freedom struggle, history of India and Indians etc.
Bibliography in the end gives a idea about the efforts put by author about how much information/papers referred/collected, researched, analysed and edited for this book. Language is simple and easy to comprehend.

Would recommend this book to all readers so that they become knowledgeable about Savarkar and Indian Struggle to freedom.

About the book :

Based on the real life story of Vinayak Savarkar, a freedom fighter a well known name in the Indian history. This book discussed the life story of our true hero. Kudos to the author for writing this amazing book. It is well researched, every points and every facts is perfectly narrated. The book Narrates the struggles and hardships faced by him and author has highlighted many other incidents which very few people know. Language is a little difficult, I would not suggest this book to a beginner. I took four days to read this book and it was worth it. It describes Savarkar's journey and how he became the father of hindutva. Through this book I got to know much more about Savarkar, his character is perfectly narrated. Also, the most heartbreaking thing was that there are still few people who treat him as a traitor. Cover and title are perfect. The Blurb was intriguing and that's why I picked up this book and it was worth reading. Savarkar is the real hero who contributed for independence. This book is a must read .

When the book is good, it is extremely good with very interesting historical facts mentioned but those are rare as most of the time the book is only bothered with drowning its readers with facts and more facts and that too done very robotically. Language is perfect and lucid as expected from a seasoned and eminent author but the narration this time went on to become a bit exhaustive with so much twisted and entwined facts.The author is ingenious to his own way of narration and treatment of his themes and story. There are many popular characters of his books and this book too takes on a new journey through this famous and strong character but don’t worry if you haven’t read the previous books as it would not hamper your experience of this book.

The book is a well-researched fact-based book rotating around the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who was born in Maharashtra and how his childhood readings shaped his ideology in his youth. It is non-fiction so more of like historical because it has things about the British era in India that has made the book more engaging to read. I felt that the book was thoroughly researched before presenting in front of the public so it wasn't biased writing and it has even helped me introduce the part of Savarkar that I haven't known before. It is occasionally igniting in between but overall I would say the author has done a lot of work for this book.

Exceeded expectations. Good insight into a cast of characters who contributed to the freedom struggle but remain footnotes in popular narrative - case in point, Bhikaji Cama of metro station fame. Savarkar, the character, is interesting too - a bundle of contradictions. His right wing descendants would do well to read his views on cow worship and gurus.

It's unfortunate how national icons like Veer Savarkar have been completely sidelined, omitted rather from the history of national movement, written ostensibly by court historians.
It's a well needed contribution to our national concience, history of the times which matters. Well done and thank you for having written this one.

Review:
Savarkar was one of the controversial leaders who served our country. Having studied a brief about him in school, I was very much intrigued to read this book to know more about him. I must say I was taken-in by the amount of hardwork the author has put in to pen down this book. His extensive research and a lucid writing style grabs the attention of readers and takes you through the Era. The writing is simple and beginners can read this wonderful book too. The book is lengthy, but the story of Veer Savarkar is an inspiring one. The first 9 chapters talk about his life in Nashik with his parents, the shaping of his freedom ideology, an extremist view under the influence of Tilak, his life in London, him as a threat to British Rule and an imprisonment. The next 3 chapters talks about him as a leader who believes in Hindutva theory with no aspects to religion, a different country for Muslims, the over hyped name Mahatma, difference between freedom and politics and finally the assassination of Gandhi.

His ideologies, his vision and his actions defined him as one of the greatest leaders and I must say the author has done a great work of writing his story for all of us. The authenticity of the writing shows-in with all the references/ bibliographies provided at the end. This book leaves no stone unturned when retelling the story of this enigmatic personality Savarkar. I really would recommend this book to all the readers and beginners. This is the book that keeps you interested throughout and leaves you with a fulfilled feeling. Savarkar is a story to be retold in every household.

Background
~~~~~~~~
The book is piece very closed to Dhananjay kheer Veer Savarkar. Though the narration has weighed a proper proportion taking care of both adult as well as beginners.
The preface of the book is little controversial displaying political views and biases of Respected PM Narendra Modiji and Ex Congress President Rahul Gandhi towards Veer Savarkar in the white and black picture.
The chapter 1 to 9 talks about the life of the freedom fighter right from start in his home in Nashik with his parents and his moulding for becoming a true patriot and his extremist's ideas for freedom under the influence of freedom fighter Tilak and then his journey in London for becoming a lawyer and his influence followed by becoming a larger threat to British and lastly his struggle in Kala Pani at age of just 23 at Andaman Nicobar island and lastly his so-called called" release.
The next part of the book after chapter 9 shows very critical aspects of freedom-
🌐Freedom Fighter Hindutva theory which carries no aspect of religion
🌐the Muslim fight for different country and freedom to partition
🌐the over coloured name "Mahatama"
🌐difference between politics and freedom
🌐Gandhi Assassination
---------------------------------------------------------
Review
🌐the book has wonderful narration; the language which helps you to understand the freedom struggle the author has tried to cover crucial parts of the time
🌐the book shows authors depth in his study making sure the book is "reader friendly"
🌐i really enjoyed the book and become a fan of the freedom fighter
🌐the book lacks in creating the character or getting into the mind of the character but also makes you understand that Veer Savarkar was a man of action.
🌐4.6⭐/5
🌚A wonderful book to understand the aspects of Indian independence
When I went to Andaman and Nicobar Islands two years back I was fascinated by the cellular jail and how Veer Savarkar had been imprisoned there. We also visited his cell and the tour guide gave us detailed descriptions of it. Now when I came across this book I knew I had to pick it up because definitely there was much more than what the tour guide told us.
This book reveals how marvelously enigmatic he was. He was very much pivotal in the freedom struggle and was whole heartedly into it. The lucid language and easy vocabulary makes it all the more engaging and not burdensome at all. All his ideas of Hinduism, and staunch prejudice towards the idea of a different Muslim nation Pakistan is well detailed.
It is a long book and I took time to finish it and will request others to not read it in a hurry. When one reads the book the reader will understand very well how the author though not explicitly but has compared other leaders to Savarkar. His early years of propagating Hindu Muslim unity and later becoming the title of the book, the entire journey though not smooth, flows smoothly in the book. At the end I was unsure whether to be sympathetic towards this man or not. This book is a well integrated work and I’m glad I picked it up.
The book “Savarkar : The true story of the father of Hindutva” is a well researched book with lots of information. It is must read for anyone who wants to know about him. The author has written his whole life story in a systematic manner. The bibliography at the end justifies the hard work author has done to add each and every detail of his life to the book. The book is a written in a simple language. It is one of the best non fiction book I have ever read. The writing style of the author is good. Though the book is bit long but you won’t feel bored even for once. The book has lots of information about the pre – independence era. After reading the biography of Veer Savarkar, my respect for him has increased several folds. He is a great freedom fighter who fought for Indian independence with all his might. The change in his personality from the supporter of Hindu – Muslim unity to support the idea of Hindu nation is shown in a detailed manner. Overall, the book is an amazing read with well researched facts in it. I will like to read more works by the author.
Recommended : Yes, highly recommended to everyone.
This is one of the books that I took time to read! I do not know a lot about Savarkar and when I discussed about the book before reading it, dad told me a few points about him and all this made me want to pick it up to know more about Savarkar!
The life history of Savarkar is well researched by the author and has written a comprehensive biography of the Father of Hindutva!
The struggle he went through when he was thrown into the Andaman Jail for a double life sentence is heart wrenching. There are so many incidents mentioned in this book that are not very well known.
Coming to the other aspects of the book, the author has penned down the life history without much ornamentation. The facts are laid out as such. The language is simple but at certain places I felt it drag a bit. Otherwise it is ok.
Through this book I got to know more about Savarkar about whom I knew very little earlier. Also this is not a book that I could finish it in one go. I took breaks between pages to assimilate the points mentioned by the author.Overall, this is a well researched biography that history buffs would love to read.
I would give this book 4/5 stars.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is one of the greatest Freedom Fighter of India, He is having a major role in The Freedom of India, But still i think he is not having that much of popularity he desrves. Ohk tell me have you ever read about him befor in any school text books? Even i think many of us have never heard his name until now.
The Biography Starts with Savarkar's life as a child to his journey of law studies in London and being a patriot and fight for a free India. The book is having a full and a detailed account of Savarkar life and i am quite Happy to See this much Data. You will get someone of the main incidents of his life specaily the Incident of Kala Pani in Andaman and Nicobar with Gandhi ji.
Authors writing style is really good. The detailed information about his life with such an beautiful written language and making it so interesting to read demands Skill and the author of the book clearly got that.
Nonfiction at its best!
Savarkar: The True Story About
Father of Hindutva by Vaibhav Purandare is a must read. The author has brilliantly pen downed the whole life of Savarkar in a simple yet lucid way. This shows the deep research & knowledge that author has done, to come up wich such an exclusive masterpiece.
Right from Savarkar's birth, his activist moments to imprisonment every minute detail is described with simplicity. The book is a long read, but surly one of the best nonfiction. If you have visited Cellular Jail in Andaman, you can imagine and understand the hardships faced by him. How those walls are created, a small jail, kind of treatment given to prisoners out there, in Marathi as we say Kalya Panyachi Shiksha which he went through will help you to relate with this book easily.
Very informative, thoroughly researched and well laid out, 'Savarkar' by 'Vaibhav Purandare' gives just not the glimpse but in depth analysis of history and the politics related to it. Every part of it is written with great interest and understanding which as a reader I completely felt pleased with. From the very appealing cover to easily readable font size, everything about this book will make you want to grasp it and dwell into it. It doesn't matter whether you were a keen history student or not, this book has everything laid before you in such a lucid and well synchronized form that getting through it, having a better understanding of a time, its people and circumstances that led to some of the most crucial episodes of the history, I for one will definitely recommend this book.
A fascinating account of an interesting (to say the least) and controversial personality. Savarkar, as a person and as a politico-religious icon has been revived and buried, celebrated and maligned in equal parts over the years. This book is a very fascinating and well-written take on a man who continues to divide opinions and still remains a not-to-be-forgotten nationalist leader who fought for and suffered for independence of his people and his country all his life. The book delves into all sorts of factual, literary and anecdotal accounts of his life of diverse geographic, political and linguistic character making this probably one of the best biographical accounts of the father of Hindutva.
