Picked this to read with my kid as a little break from the school text books and exam routine. Fun way of knowing little things about Rani Laxmi Bai, Nana Sahib and Bahadur Shah Zafar and the revolt of 1857.

Ideal for kids of age 8-10 yrs. Rattu and Poorie are sisters, they love each other but also get mad.and wild at each other, the latter happens more often. When she is miffed with something, Rattu's wishes brings these historical figures magically in front of her, her sister and their friends and together, they embark upon a lively, little adventure and ride into the past.

Actually 4.5/5

On the occasion of Republic Day, the good folks at Puffin India sent over this little gem for me to review.
This unique book aims at teaching children about the brave leaders that fought India’s first war of independence in 1857. I really appreciate books that teach our country’s history to young minds. A clear storytelling of India’s past, is the need of the hour.

The three storylines in focus are those of Rani Lakshmi Bai and Jhalkari Bai, Nana Sahib and Azimullah Khan, and Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Each story marries the imagination of the protagonists, Rattu and Poorie, with ample facts and information. The lovely illustrations by Meghna Menon, make the book riveting for young ones.

The only gripe I have is owing to personal preference. The author has a tendency to launch into rhymes in the middle of paragraphs. While that may appeal to little ones, I found it quite distracting!

The book is aimed at children of ages 5 and up, but my almost 4-year-old was hooked when I read a section of it out to him.

I highly recommend this book to all children.

The Uprising of 1857 is a topic that I have great interest in. Being born in Jhansi, the tales of Queen Manikarnika and her glory were very captivating. The history buff that I am, I have read many books on the Uprising of 1857.

On my last visit to Jhansi, Mishkaa, my curious little girl had a lot of questions about Jhansi fort, King Gangadhar, British Raj and Maharani Laxmi Bai.

This book is titled "Rattu and Poorie's Adventures in History - 1857" by author Parvati Sharma. This book is for young readers and is written with humour. The characters of the uprising are introduced with a little background which is easy for the kids to understand and also it makes them curious to know more.

The main characters of this book are two sisters Rattu and Poorie. Read on to set on an engaging adventure and meet the heroes of the 1857 Uprising.

Do you talk about history with your kids? Do you tell them about the freedom struggle? I often do and hence M loved this book.

As parents, we do want our kids to have knowledge about India, its history and culture. But going by history and geography books might sound boring. How about storytelling then?

Parvati Sharma charms the young mind again with the stories of the First War of Independence and the leaders. Her book “Rattu and Poorie’s’ adventures in history” captures the essence with the captivating story of two sisters. Rattu and Poorie met leaders of the stories who share their first-hand an account of the war. The causes that triggered them, the actions they took and the end we know of. Making the introduction to role models interesting.

Illustrationsby Meghna Menon adds charisma to the plot.

Recommended for 7+ years old join the adventures of two sisters feel the thrill of the year 1857. Fun. Light reading. Gives an introduction to historic characters.  As a reader and parent, I was glad to see the effort taken to mention the tale of Azimullah Khan. Though, I missed reading about Tania Tope who was an important leader and stirred patriotism. I would have loved to see him with Nana and Krantidoot Azimullah Khan.

Yet, a good historical fiction that's fun and educational.

come along, then said Lakshmi Bai and Jhalkari Bai. 'Come along and listen’
Rattu is in an awful, terrible mood. Her bossy more established sister, Poorie, has taken her toys and headed out to play without her. Rattu has made horrendous appearances at everybody: Roundy the cat,Shanti the cook and Mother too. In any case, none of this makes her vibe any better.
She wishes she had a fighter to secure her and agree with her stance. No sooner does she make the desire than the ground starts to shake-and abruptly, there's not one, yet two warriors in the room!
So start Rattu and Poorie's stupendous undertakings in the Uprising of 1857, and their experiences with its legends: from Rani Lakshmi bai of Jhansi and Nana Sahib of Kanpur to the last Mughal Head, Bahadur Shah Zafar.

The heroic moments and personalities of our Indian history are very well explained in this book by the author.
Each chapter has a lesson from past that works well in present day too.
Liked the characterisation of Rattu and Poorie.
Author has done a great job by essaying the historic events in simple way and keeping the facts intact.
