Myne has finally started to adjust to her new life... but once a bookworm, always a bookworm. As winter sets in, there are historical methodologies to try: papyrus, clay tablets... anything that can hold letters and words. Even if it means getting well enough to visit the forest! But first there are chores to do and mythical fruits to cook.

Fortunately, Myne has an ally in Otto, her father's paperwork-swamped colleague. Can he teach her how to read and write in this world and put her to work somewhere that will advance her goals and status? Or will she be stuck as a poor, illiterate girl forever?

This is very cute and done well, but I don't think I'll continue on with the series.

While it is an interesting premise for an isekai, it's not doing anything super interesting for me to stick with. Like yeah, she made a basket. And then she made pancakes. And she's learning to read a write. Usually I'm all for the slower paced slice of life of it all, but it's not working for me here.

I'd still recommend this series to at least try out!

One of the fascinating elements of this series is how the protagonist has retained the knowledge of her previous life and uses it to solve problems in her present reality. That plus having to deal with her physical limitations makes this another series where I'm trying to figure out ahead of the protagonist how I would deal with the situations she finds herself in--all having to navigate being a part of a brand new family who has no idea she isn't the soul they think she is! I'm hooked now, and got the rest of the series from my library! Can't wait to see what happens!

This is such fun to read, because you just watch the characters who think they are dealing with a sickly six year old, but whom we know is a not really sane visitor from our world, as she tries to bully the people around her into producing mass printing, starting with her attempts at papyrus and clay tablets. It's so crazy it's fun, especially with the great artistic details of basket making, dressmaking and the magic fruit picking.

Another extremely cute installment of this manga. I want to make these pancakes now! Someone said the style of this reminds them of a Studio Ghibli movie and I could totally see that.

Hello,

Born into a world where books are scarce, a tiny, sickly bookworm tries to make her own by remembering the technology of ancient Earth cultures. Egyptian papyrus didn't work, maybe the clay tablets of ancient Babylon?

Myne, a woman reborn into another world in a small child's body, moves on to trying to create books by making clay tablets.

I like this story, but I don't love it yet. Myne makes lace, pancakes (out of what her friends insist is 'bird food'), and practices the alphabet.

I maybe need to apologise for and/or revise my review of the prior volume, since one of my complaints therein was that Gunther is drawn a bit older-looking than I expect.

I then got the next* light novel to prepare to read next, and... Gunther looks a little old on the cover (and a bit in the interior illustrations). Oops. I guess Effa just ages well?/Did she marry a somewhat older man?

*re-reading these in order: 1st light novel, 1st manga, 2nd light novel, 2nd manga...

So, anyway, no complaints about the art this time around. I *do* have a vague complaint about the fact the dialogue balloons mysteriously lose their tails for a good number of pages, leaving it vague who is actually saying what. There's also a typo with "doesns't"... and, oh, okay—ONE complaint about the art is how the cover has Lutz taking a bite of one (pancake) while holding another one that already has a bite out of it. Finish the first one before starting another, Lutz! :)

This volume also covers some of the more interesting lore of the series, like the mysterious fey plants that provide "parue" fruits, which absolutely sound like something I want to try, even if the method for getting them sounds like a nightmare (although, I bet modern technology would be able to figure out a less terrible way to harvest them). This is also when Myne starts accidentally letting slip her otherworldly knowledge, most particularly with the hairpin she designs for Tuuli. Oh, the shenanigans THAT starts, haha...

Anyway, still recommended for fans of the series! I also appreciate that Suzuka did her own research into making the things Myne made, to better understand how to draw them! I really should've bumped up to five stars on that account, but whether from translation or not, the missing dialogue tails issue really is annoying...

Volume 2 reverses roles a little bit; where Volume 1 focused mostly on Myne bringing her modern old-life knowledge to her new world, Volume 2 sees the setting teaching *her* new things about the world, usually about the basics of survival in a place that doesn't have modern amenities. (For example, there's a chapter devoted to pig-killing day and the work that goes into preserving enough meat to ensure they'll survive the harsh winter.)

Myne's interest in books and reading - mostly a source of exaggerated humor and her single-minded goal in the first book - also becomes more intrinsic to her life in her new setting, as her interest in learning the written language of her new world and her natural skill with numbers gives her lots of opportunity to succeed in this setting, where many are illiterate. (After all, even though books barely exist in this world, and though most commoners are illiterate, reading, writing, and arithmetic are still intensely valuable skills.)

She still progresses in her goal to make books - this time gathering the materials to make clay tablets to record information on - but Volume 2 develops the story in a way that moves it away from the one-note direction of the first volume, and makes me eager to read more!

I'm actually really enjoying the story now, to the point where I wanted to read this one right away. I started watching the anime and didn't want to get too far ahead, though that's kind if inevitable since my library only has these first two volumes so far. In fact, I was devastated when I went to grab this volume only to find it wasn't on the shelf and had gone missing. Thankfully it found its way back, and as soon as it came in I started reading. I don't know why I rated the first volume so low; I guess I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I'm invested in the story now.

Spoilers

In this volume I became more invested in Myne's struggles to get stronger so she could achieve her goal of making books. She made some good attempts in this, though neither of them worked out. I thought the clay tablets were a good idea, and it's unfortunate it didn't work. I wonder what she'll try next. Maybe wood or something to do with fabric, like embroidery? I'm excited to find out, though I'll probably find out through the anime since my library only has the first two volumes at the moment.
