The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
Mr.Marty Loves a Party! by Dan Gutman. I gave this book a four star rating because the birthday party was funny and so were the characters. I recommend this book to anyone that likes birthday parties. This book connects to the theme funny because there was party entertainers that are not supposed to be there. It is A.j's birthday today and he does not know what he wants to do for his birthday party. His mom's old friend Mr.Marty is a party planner so she invited him over to help plan A.j's birthday party. Mr.Marty gave him a bunch of ideas but A.j did not like them but then Mr.Marty had the idea of a star wars party and A.j said he liked that one so the day of the party Mr.Marty had a truck drop off three porta potties in the backyard. There was a knock at the door and A.j thought it was his friends Ryan,Michael and Neil but it was Darth Vader and he asked if he could use the restroom so I told him where it was. Then there was another knock at the door and it was Ryan,Michael and Neil I told them they could go to the backyard and then there was another knock at the door and it was Andrea and Emily so I told them they could go to the backyard. Later we were in the backyard and there was knock on the gate it was other people that my parents had me invite so I let them in but there was a problem because Darth Vader was still in the bathroom but he was supposed to be showing us how to use a lightsaber. But then there was a knock on the gate and it was a clown named Buffo so I let him in and he was entertaining us but then there was another knock on the gate. It was another clown I said that we already have a clown and he asked if the clown was named Buffo and I said yes and then the clowns started to fight. The grown ups had to break up the fight and then there was another knock at the gate and when I opened the gate there was a long line of people so I let them in. My dad asked Mr.Marty why there were so many people there and he said he invited all the party entertainers on his contact list by accident. My dad was really mad so my mom tried to calm him down. Everyone was really hungry so my dad asked where the pizza guy was and Mr.Marty said he forgot to order the pizza but then there was a knock on the gate so my dad answered it and yelled at the lady so she left. My mom yelled at the lady to come back because she was a cook so she helped everyone make their own pizza and then when everyone left I opened my presents. I got cool toys and some cloths.

My 9 year old has been pushing me to read this book for weeks, since he really enjoyed it. Once I started, it took around an hour to read.
I can see why this is a series for "reluctant readers". It's silly with a really zany protagonist who is telling the story to the reader. There are reoccurring jokes ("Guess who walked through the door"). There are even jokes for parents.
There is no bad language or putting others down. But, there aren't any moral lessons or other knowledge here either. I would feel comfortable letting even a really advanced younger reader read this series.
This particular book revolves around AJ's 9th birthday party, where things get really silly.
Mr. Marty loves a party by Dan gutman. it was darth Vader yes the real Darth Vader well Darth Vader is just a character in the movies so there's no real Darth Vader but it was a guy in a real Darth Vader costume and that was pretty cool.he was tall and scary looking and he had his lightsaber.I gave this book 3 stars because it was funny and I would recommend this to a friend
