When We Hurt is Tracey Gerrards’s excellent sequel to When We Dance.
It follows on from the ending of the first book and the author takes us on a gripping journey into Vlad’s dark past. We discover the reasons behind his possessiveness towards Holly and his overwhelming desire to love and protect her. Yet he cannot completely believe that she loves him and wants to be with him forever.
This book is more character driven than the first one, as if we were just casual acquaintances of the pair of love-birds, but now that we’ve become friends with them, we get to know them a whole lot better.
Gerrard has done a wonderful job of bringing Vlad and Holly to life, along with their extended family and circle of friends.
I have the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read what happens next.

A Brilliant Sequel

It’s been almost 2 weeks after Holly left and Vlad is in a very bad way. Depressed, drinking himself to sleep, not eating properly or shaving and washing and pushing his family away he’s only brought out of his stupor when he learns that his youngest son Lucas has gone missing after they had an argument. He is found safe at Holly’s and although his son going missing is a traumatic ordeal it allows him to see Holly again. Very slowly they start to patch things up but in order for them to move on Vlad must tell Holly about his life. However what she hears knocks her for six and his revelations could permanently split them apart. If they are to stay together Holly must do some soul searching and decide if she really does love Vlad enough despite his past. Just as they get on an even keel though there is some more startling news that could further disrupt their lives. As with the first book this was a steamy and fast paced read. I look forward to reading book 3.

I am so hooked! I absolutely love this series and the second book only left me wanting more. I’m not ashamed to say I shed many tears reading this story. Tears from the hurt that Vlad and Holly have gone through in the past and present and also tears from happiness and just witnessing the sheer love that exists between the family members and friends. And a bonus is that the hot scenes are on fire! It’s the perfect mix between emotional romance and steam!

It just gets better and better!

Turned to drink, feeling guilty on so many levels, Vlad tried to numb the pain of loosing Holly. Oblivious whilst wallowing in self pity his son Lucas is missing. Soon found at Holly's place, Vlad realises things must change if he stand a chance of patching thing up with his both son and Holly.
The second book in the series by this talented author and it certainly did not disappoint. Tracey Gerrard has a fantastic skill of telling a story that sucks you right in and holds you easily from beginning to end. Great to learn more about Vlad's past that gives reasoning to his outbursts and irrational behaviour and has Holly with a dilemma of acceptance or rejection. Secrets, revelations and pacts made, there journey continues with family and friends heavily involved to hopefully restore happiness. Fantastic job, highly recommended and looking forward to the next.

Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I couldn’t wait to get started on “When We Hurt” and I was not disappointed. The second book followed on seamlessly from “When We Dance” with Vlad turning to drink to numb the pain of losing his beloved Holly. However, knowing his behaviour was unacceptable, and that it was he who was in the wrong, not even the alcohol can bring solace to this tortured man. Vlad’s four sons are also devastated that they may lose Holly from their lives, and the youngest, Lucas, manages to get the couple together again. Vlad realises that to have any future with Holly he must reveal his dark and shocking past, but he worries that when Holly knows the truth, she may leave him anyway. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to the third in the trilogy.

It was all going so well for second-time-arounders Holly and Vlad. Social gatherings were happening and everyone was hitting it off well, his family and her friends, and despite the hurts in the respective pasts of the couple it looked like a happy ending was imminent, with one of Vlad’s establishments potentially hosting a wedding.

And then, in the space of minutes, things changed, and not for the better. Holly tried to shed an unwelcome dance partner, while Vlad saw things that weren’t happening, saw red and saw off the guy in no uncertain terms. He totally lost it, lost Holly in the process, and the wealth of texts and voice mails which he sent her from the bottom of a whiskey bottle aren’t getting her back.

A bit of scheming on the part of Vlad’s young son Lucas and the couple are speaking again, but the dark demons of Vlad’s past need to be addressed before he and Holly can move on into a future together. It’s a shady and murky backstory to which the reader is admitted, along with Vlad’s fears of losing Holly if he opens up to her too. Can she overcome her reaction to his revelations? The family and friends are onside to help sort things out, but will it all be enough? Read and reveal for yourself.

When We Hurt is the second book in the Ain’t Nobody series and continues the story of Holly Spencer and Vladimir Petrov. The author once again takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster ride as we step into both the characters point of view and experience the hurt and pain each are feeling as a result of Vladimir’s brutal behaviour. The only way forward for the couple is for Vladimir to open up about his dark past but once he tells all, the question remains as to whether this is something Holly can live with knowing about the man she loves.

The same wonderful cast introduced in the first book continue to feature in the second as they support the couple through their difficulties. I really enjoyed seeing how each of the secondary characters develop further enabling the reader to discover more about them, and understand and enjoy the relationships between each other and their connections with Vladimir and Holly.

The plot moves at a good pace with lots of drama and tension throughout. The author does not rush straight to a happy ending but clearly demonstrates the complexities and turmoil that a past such as Vladimir’s would raise through the internal dialogue which is credible and heartfelt. Although I did spot some minor editing issues, this wasn’t enough to distract my enjoyment of the story.

Readers should note that this book does have adult content and scenes of intimacy.

Overall we award 4.5 stars.

Compelling...

When we Hurt (Ain’t Nobody Series Book 2) picks up the story where Book 1 left off after Vlad’s jealous rage and lack of trust has devastated Holly and his family who have taken her into their hearts. Full of remorse, he tries to contact Holly to beg her forgiveness, but she doesn’t want to be found. His family step very carefully around him and then must tell him that Lucas, his youngest son has disappeared.

It is a story in which powerful emotions have been unleashed. To make things right, Vlad must reveal his dark past, knowing that it might part them forever, but Holly insists. With his family’s support, the two meet and agree to talk. Holly says she wants to know what made Vlad the way he is, but the reality is beyond her comprehension.

Once the story has been told, understanding must be reached before Holly and Vlad can trust again. Will the past kill their future life together, or is there hope for a new beginning? A compelling story that keeps you reading to the very last page and beyond...
