About the author

Matteo Farinella is a London based neuroscientist and cartoonist. He works at the intersection between science and art, producing info-comics and scientific illustrations. He collaborated with high-profile scientific projects and institutions such as UCL, HarvardX, Columbia University and OpenWorm. He is also very passionate about education and public engagement with science.

Matteo Farinella received a PhD in neuroscience in 2013. And he also draws comics! His Neurocomic (also Nobrow, 2013) I also read, though I liked this even better. His goal in the comics is to make science more fun and accessible. The drawing is great, and the information is useful and interesting, as we proceed inside the human body, into the brain, to see how the sense work. I think this is great comics work in the service of science.

First of all, this is just a gorgeous book. The gold and silver on the cover are just sumptuous, and the book is a delight to hold in your hands. If you're using an e-reader, you aren't getting anywhere near the full experience. Content aside, this is just an impressive artifact. Way to go, Nobrow!

A young woman working on building a virtual reality machine undergoes an accident which takes her on a tour of the traditional five senses and the physiology that underlies them. Or is it all just a fever dream while she's unconscious?

This is a fine example of graphic nonfiction. Dr. Farinella seems to be well versed in all of the latest research regarding touch, taste, smell, hearing, and vision. Everything is explained as simply as possible, but there's no sense that anything is being deliberately omitted in the interest of keeping it short. The artwork is cartoony yet clear--it kind of reminds me of Jay Hosler’s work to some degree.
This was an interesting and informative book, if a bit on the short side. Recommended!

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was like a summary of my psychophysiology class in the university. And I think that is the reason why I enjoyed it, it has a lot of terms that if you previously don’t know the definitions, maybe you’ll have to read the book looking, every two pages, in google the meanings of the words. And perhaps it will make you not appreciate all the content. And this, because the author doesn’t deepen any term.

In the book, Farinella explain the five senses in an ingenious way, I love comics, and this was especial for me. But I’m aware that without my previous knowledge about the senses I had not liked it so much. I would have loved read this comic while I was taking my psychophysiology class.

This was very disappointing. The art is uninspired if not bad in places. The underlying story is mildly amusing. The technical details were complicated and not well explained. It might work at a high school biology level - with additional explanations. I did find the end notes very helpful and actually wished there were more.

“When stimulated, touch receptors usually suppress those around them. This is why rubbing an injury can ease the pain…it stimulates the surrounding area, inhibiting the receptors signalling the pain information.”

This has some lovely art work combined with a laid back and fun approach to learning which makes this worthwhile. We fall into a kind of Alice In Wonderland rabbit hole of knowledge and intrigue finding out our mechanoreceptors from our chemoreceptors.

"The Senses" is an interesting enough concept even if the narrative does grow a little woolly as it goes on, but either way I thought this was an enjoyable enough read.

Ależ to było ciekawe!

Czułam się jakbym oglądała „Było sobie życie” w wersji premium. Wiele ciekawostek, o których nie miałam pojęcia (czuje się zachęcona, żeby zgłębić moją wiedzę jeszcze na niektóre tematy), wielu ciekawych badaczy i badaczek, bardzo ładna kreska i humor, który rozluźnia całą historię!

Chociaż nie wszystkie informacje były dla mnie nowe, to bawiłam się świetnie i z chęcią przeczytałbym więcej komiksów o ludzkim ciele 🫀🫁🧠👁️👂🏻👅

Absolutely adored this. Enjoyed it a lot more than the previous Neurocomics book. Matteo artistically guides us through the rudimentary neuroscience behind our five senses, giving homage to the major scientists that paved the way. Learned a thing or two, such as 'blindsight', & had fun along the way! 10/10 would recommend to any science g̶e̶e̶k̶s̶ enthusiasts 😌

Jakby miały istnieć lektury na biologia to powinno się tam znałeś, wiedziałam już te rzeczy co były w książce w większości, ale jest idealna dla 8 klas bądź 1 średniej.

La edición es muy bonita aunque luego no se refleja en el estilo artístico del dibujo que, si bien no es feo tampoco es llamativo.

La historia explora los 5 sentidos clásicos y, si bien cuenta algunos detalles divulgativos interesantes estos son muy breves. He aprendido cosas interesantes (¿visión ciega? ¿WTF?) pero no se profundiza mucho.

Por otro lado tampoco creo que sirva como libro introductorio. Se manejan conceptos como sinapsis, neurotransmisores y longitudes de onda de manera que requiere cierto conocimiento previo.

No es una mala lectura, es ligera y rápida, pero creo que se queda a medias.

Autor przekazuje bardzo dużo wiadomości, obala kilka mitów, prezentuje nowinki z zakresu badań neurologicznych, przedstawia sporo ważnych dla neurobiologii naukowczyń i naukowców, zamykając to wszystko w spójnej fabule i nie przynudzając.
Do tego bohaterką jest naukowczyni, która zajmuje się projektowaniem symulatora rozszerzonej rzeczywistości wirtualnej i żyje z partnerką! (Nie jest to powiedziane wprost, ale sugestia wyraźna) Poza tym jest to komiks wybitnie naukowy i autor odrzuca w nim teorię zamkniętej w naszym ciele duszy, czy też możliwość jej odrębnego funkcjonowania. No przecież cudowne!

First, I thought it was a nice graphic novel. Interesting and educational, but at the end, it has a closure that I wasn't expecting. It reminded me to open a bit more my senses, to start thinking the way I process information is not the same way as others, and in that difference is where we can start understanding others.

this is something new and interesting for me! a science comic that is written about our five senses 🤚👅👃👂👁 and it is such an easy read when i think its supposed to be pretty complicated. there is actually a flow in explaining all of it and i love how the illustrations are so good - besides being a neuroscientist, i actually cant believe dr. matteo farinella is an illustrator himself as well!!! the notes & recommendations at the back of the book are 💯. found myself getting intrigued of reading more about our body 💡 as someone who doesnt really like science as a subject in school 🙊, i would definitely be more interested if all science textbooks are written like this! 😂

This is a beautiful book and not just for its cover. I'm a neuroscience researcher and I adored how the senses and its histories were depicted. I essentially got a book display to show off this book.

While the senses are really simplified, I'm told that it's not accessible enough to be enjoyed by middle school students. But because of how simplified it is, I haven't been recommending it to other researchers (probably because I am in a bit of an academic bubble). I took this book to a café and it was a perfect breakfast toast comic.

wah actually this was a really cute and semi easily understandable summary of the 5 sense leh LIKE IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY SCIENTIFIC but it felt like it was explained at a level that was not that difficult to comprehend, altho some parts i still dot dot dot HAHHA BUT ISOK MANS it was fun and i read it kinda quick too!! altho had to pause and process at several points in the book

it's a graphic novel too!!! SO I THINK THAT RLY HELPED bc i could see the visuals and make more sense of it!!

Młoda kobieta pracująca nad budową maszyny wirtualnej rzeczywistości przeżywa wypadek, który zabiera ją na wycieczkę po wszystkich zmysłach i ich fizjologii. Poznajemy dość schematyczny, acz zanimizowany świat różnych receptorów smaku, węchu, czucia czy słuchu. Jednak choć początkowo kobieta czuła się w jak w swoim programie VR, tak idąc za kolejnymi przewodnikami po świecie zmysłów coraz bardziej wątpi, czy to aby jej program, czy może sen.

naprawdę w porządku komiks. kupiłam przypadkiem w markecie z sekcji "tania książka" i nie oczekiwałam żadnej rewolucyjności. kilka ciekawostek szczególnie mnie urzekło (rozdział o smaku był moim ulubionym <3), ale niektóre rzeczy nie były wystarczająco dobrze objaśnione i nawet dla mnie, studentki biologicznego kierunku, nie były do końca zrozumiałe. wg mnie można byłoby lepiej to zrobić. mimo to miło spędziłam godzinkę na hamaku, a to najważniejsze.

I would have loved loved loved this as an 11 year old! This is the anatomically accurate story of how the senses work, without a crazy school bus story to dumb it down. All the famous scientists are in there, including - shock! - some women!

Some of it took me back to college and study of rods and cones in eyesight.
It covered quite a bit and in an edgy drawing style.
Certainly high school and older in terms of science level (and LOL the party.)
