In 1972, a boxcar left Toronto with a menagerie of farm animals and an eager young couple and pulled into the station platform in Kingston, Nova Scotia bound for a deserted hundred-acre farm on the South Mountain in Harmony, determined to preserve the foundations of farmsteads past while constructing a geodesic dome. Armed with an irrepressible sense of humour, they were back-to-the-landers. Over the next forty years, through flood and fire, triumph and catastrophe, they persevered.
I enjoyed reading THE DOME CHRONICLES by local Nova Scotian author Garry Leeson. This selection of short stories about farmers, sustainable agriculture, Garry Leeson and his family's experiences were very interesting and sometimes quite humorous. The coloured and black and white photos gave visuals and added authenticity to the personal stories. The first time I met Garry was at an auction where he was the auctioneer. His wife Andrea and I belong to the same gardening Club, and she recently retired from her position as head librarian at the Kingston Library. The book ends with "But that's another story", so I hope that means there will be another book. 4 heavenly stars ⭐️️⭐️️⭐️️⭐️️
Youthful eccentric, charmingly quirky, moves from Ontario with a literal train-car load of possessions, animals, and family, to a property located in rural Nova Scotia, which was purchased on a whim.
What could go wrong?
Much indeed does go wrong but many things also eventually turn out just right. These tales are told with humour, self-deprecation, insight, warmth, and compassion.
Completely charming, and a glimpse into the escapades of a remarkable life.
Suuuper inspirational!! So many interesting stories. The one about Jeff was my favourite though. Its a shame how it ended but it was so entertaining. Another great NS book : )
