Worth the Risk

Rate this book
Listening Length: 7 hours and 15 minutes.

At 18, Landon Miller was sure about two things - he was a submissive and he was going to be with Gregory Douglas for the rest of his life. That was until parents and school got in the way, and he found himself in New York, thousands of miles from the man who had learned how to take him in hand.

Years later, behind the bar at Rapture, the BDSM club he's built on a foundation of disillusioned dreams and broken bricks, Landon finds himself face to face with his favorite memory and greatest regret - Gregory. Determined to recapture the magic of their first love, Gregory works to right the wrongs of their past so they can move on together.

Battling through the resentment from their youth, Landon is unexpectedly called back to New York, and Gregory can't help but fear the past is repeating itself. Fighting familiar feelings of helplessness, he makes the decision to give Landon what he needs, even if that means not chasing after the man he adores...again. Gregory can only hope when Landon returns, he won't throw away the love they've fought and risked everything for.

Uhhm question… couldn’t have someone told me that Z.A. Martin is actually Alexander Cendese? Man, dude really makes every character sound like a frat bro. Pity, the story was quite good so far but I wasn’t able to get the feels with him narrating at all.

Actually, this whole kinky series sounds pretty good. Maybe I come back to reading the books one day.

I honestly don’t care about these characters and with sex scene after sex scene and no actual substance I have to call it quits. Not even one of my fave voices could make me continue because the story lacks plot and solely gets by with just sex.

Boring and repeating the same thing over and over again.

3 and 1/2 Stars. This book started out with so much promise and I was loving it. The story was compelling and the kink was incredible. Then suddenly it was as if the author ran out of ideas and had Landon get terribly upset over nothing and take off to New York. It wasn’t rational behavior and it just soured the rest of the book for me.

It's only book one and I'm already obsessed. I cannot wait for the rest of the books because based on who they're going to be about I know they're going to be amazing. I fell in love not only with Landon and Gregory but their closest friends as well. The dynamics between them all are great and you can so pick up on all the tension that runs through them all. It makes you both excited and anxious for their turn in the spotlight.

To be honest I don't usually have a thing for second chance romances. I'll read them but normally they do nothing for me. And well, I had some of those feelings right off the bat. It didn't take me long before I was rooting for Landon and Gregory's story, however. Kate Hawthorne has magical powers because she's proven over and over again how she can make me love her work with just one scene. Though it's hard to pinpoint when I started falling in love with both Landon and Gregory.

Gregory, I loved him right off the bat. He was just so Dommy (yes, that's a word) and so calm. Even though he was hurting. Even though he was unsure, he was still confident. He knew what he wanted and he fought for it. And what he wanted was Landon.

Emotional, bratty Landon. Seriously, the guy is so emotional. But I loved that about him. Until he turned into an idiot and I got very huffy. Like so huffy I may have screamed in frustration. But while he might have been emotional and sassy and in need of a good spanking, he was such a good character. His submission was so beautiful. His fear of the "what if" was so real. Even though I wanted to throttle him I liked him and couldn't wait until he realized he was an idiot.

The BDSM in this book felt real. Realer than anything I have ever read. And over the past few months, I've read a lot of BDSM. While practically every book I read was good and had amazing scenes in their own right there was something about Worth The Risk that felt more. I don't know if it was because of the club scene, or just because Gregory and Landon fit together like a puzzle, but there was something tangible about them. Their scenes were alive and I felt like a voyeur in their relationship.

I love how, despite their issues Gregory and Landon understand what they need—both together and apart. They allow the other to discover who they became in their time apart. They explored and learned and adapted to the people they are now, rather than trying to pretend they were the same.

I dare a reader to try this book and not fall in love with some aspect of it. Worth The Risk seems to have it all. A patient yet controlling Dom, an emotional sub, a stylish dog, and almost bacon sex. What more could you want?

I'll be over here waiting for the rest of the series to be written so I can indulge in my new obsession. In the meantime y'all should read this book.

I really enjoy Kate Hawthorne's books and I also enjoy second-chance romances but this one sort of missed the mark with me. Part of that is because it was a little more hard-core BDSM than I typically like and Landon was just a bit too immature for his age and I thought Gregory was ridiculously patient with him. It was also a little disjointed in my opinion but that could just be my unease with the BDSM.

Surprisingly...emotional

I liked this emotionally heavy aspect of Daddy-kink. A lot have just been about the sex and are usually pretty on-the-surface shallow. This was surprisingly deep and mature, which I didn’t realise I needed until now.

It was good...really good. It feels less like a fictional book and more like everyday life and again, I didn’t realise I needed something so “real” and somewhat raw. But that said, do people really cry so much?? 🤔

I think this series would be awesome. Definitely reading the rest of it 😉

Well damn....This one is an amazing read....I've loved all Kate's books I've read and this one is damn near up the top...Landon and Gregory get a second chance at love at 15 years apart and the way they are together is amazing....Landon is definitely submissive and the way Gregory controlled him was brilliant....I loved their dynamics...I also loved the secondary characters who I know will be getting their own books...I especially loved Verity and can't wait to get their book......This is no way a cliffhanger but it will definitely leave you wanting to read the rest of the series......I can't wait for the next one and this will definitely be going on my shelf in hardback x

Second chance romances are usually something I stay away from but I went ahead with this one because of the kink factor.

As far as second chances go...I guess I can see how this went south and how they can come back together without too much blame on one side or the other but in today's world of social media, I just find it hard to believe that these guys never tried to at least social media stalk each other a little. Plus, why not reach out before a chance meeting 14 years later? But, whatever, they didn't and they meet by happenstance and basically fall right into old habits and argue their case about who was in the wrong and try and forgive and let go of past resentment.

All in all, the biggest problem in this book is Landon is an immature 30+ year old man that has too much pride to say he is sorry and admit when he is wrong and thinks ghosting someone doing right by you is ok. Gregory was a saint to put up with that.

The sex is kinky and does pepper the whole book so it's not just at the start of the book. The side characters, all set up for their own books, are interesting and should have good stories to tell, however if they are all going to be second chance stories, I may not keep going. I just struggle too much with that concept.

DNF at 13 % for now

I found the sub and the best friend not nearly as cute and bantery as the author seemed to think. The big first meeting after years was underwhelming and there weren't nearly enough sexy vibes in general for a book about a BDSM club owner.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Worth the Risk is the first book in Kate Hawthorne’s Giving Consent series and it hooked me in right away. It is clear when Gregory and Landon reconnect that the love they shared never really went away, but there is a lot of baggage they have to work through before they can move forward. Both of the men are resentful of the other, and it takes some communication and working through their problems before they can move forward. I appreciated that we see these men deal with their issues before they jump back into things, and we actually see them talking through their problems together. Once they are past this conflict, Landon and Gregory do move pretty seamlessly into all in with their relationship, so things did feel a touch fast after so much time apart. But I still really liked their connection and Hawthorne makes their chemistry really clear. The guys have a pretty intense BDSM relationship and I enjoyed seeing their dynamic and how each get so much from their partnership.

I won't lie, the sex in this book was super hot, but I'm a person that likes the balance of my books on the romance and conversation and character development side and a little less on the sex. This book was like sex scene, three sentences about the past and/or feelings, sex, sex, sex, two sentences about the characters' relationship or life or friends, sex, sex, and - you guessed it - more sex. By the end of the novel, I didn't feel like the characters had developed at all. The only thing they'd really managed to do was unfuck their shit from 15 years ago - mostly by having sex.

If you're looking for something titillating with some growly possessive stuff, this book is for you. If you're looking for a meaty, character driven story, I'd pass.

3.5 stars.

I really liked Landon and Gregory and their story, but I found the timeline questionable. They spent fifteen years pining for and blaming the other, but then they just kind of forgive and forget everything almost overnight. I suppose some might feel they already had the foundation, but to me it felt like there was a lot more that needed to be resolved. I just had a lot of discomfort with parts of the story.
But, it is a compelling story even with the things that bothered me, and I am glad I read their story. I will check out other books by the author.

No Hard Limits

An author who actually writes taboo.
Highschool kinksters reunited. A BDSM club in a renovated church. Wax play, auto-erotic asphyxiation, choking, exhibitionism, fisting, urethral plugging, edging, caging, marking, collaring, ballgag, minimal bondage, caning, flogging -- I think that covers the major ones.

R/Y/G safe word compliant - No hard limits. One scene where the sub is gagged and tap out methods are not mentioned, prior consent given.

Kate Hawthorne's characters are interesting, and her writing engaging. Her talent for creating strong personalities and unique dynamics shines here. The main problem between Lucas and Gregory is a lack of communication, and a stubborn refusal to listen on Lucas' part. But thanks to Verity, and their ability to push Lucas past his drama llama tendencies, these two will get a second chance at their hea.

More Sex Than Story!

A second chance love story between Landon & Gregory. As I mentioned before, I have a like/dislike relationship with this author. This story is no different...I like the Gregory character but no so much Landon. He is childish, temperamental and immature. I also ambivalent about this whole D/s lifestyle as described. All I can say is the story is readable...
This really is a 2.5 ⭐️ rating!

I got 3/4 of the way through this and DNFed- the audio is fine but this is the greatest pile of nonsense I have ever had the misfortune to read.

I've liked this author before but this is a prime example of if you don't know about BDSM, don't write about it. This is confused, erratic and inaccurate

Full disclosure: I am not involved with the BDSM lifestyle in any way, shape, or form. I’ve known a few people who were over the years, which I’d like to think has taught me to view the lifestyle without judgement and has taught me to know what is “normal” (safe, sane and consensual) versus what crosses lines. There’s a lot I still don’t know, and I’m okay with that.

Anyway, I have to be in the right kind of mindset to read a BDSM story. I’m not morally opposed, not at all. It’s just not my “thing,” so if the scenes in the book are just there for titillation it’s going to fall pretty flat with me. I like to read the genre to get at the emotions of the different characters involved, and Hawthorne did a fantastic job of showcasing both characters’ feelings and needs here.

At first, it was easy to be sympathetic to both sides. Their initial separation happened because they were kids, there were factors outside of their control, and these things happen. My biggest complaint about the book is that we find out Landon did something back during their initial separation that was very wrong, and he did it deliberately, and he’s spent the next decade and change blaming Greg for it.

(I’m being deliberately vague about it, because I don’t want to go spreading spoilers like manure, but what he did was pretty bad.)

Anyway, like I said, I’m not involved with the lifestyle. Most of the Doms I know wouldn’t be quite so forgiving as Greg under the circumstances. Now, when these guys initially separated they were young, and it’s surprising they didn’t cross any other lines as they were learning about their needs and their tendencies. It’s not like there were a lot of great resources around when they were kids.

My issue is that they’re not kids now, and up until very late in the book Landon has a bad case of victim mentality without ever taking responsibility for the part he played.

That’s honestly the main complaint I had with the book. While I was reading it, this felt like a minor issue. It was only after I’d put the book down and sat with it for a few days that it really started to eat at me. Hawthorne did a great job with these guys and the world around them, to include adding a major supporting nonbinary character who I’m a little in love with.

At the end of the day, this is a fantastic book and you should absolutely pick it up.

Landon and Greg were high school sweethearts, but Landon didn't follow Greg to Florida like they planned and instead let his parents pressure him into going to New York. Greg cut all ties with Landon. Years later, they are both back in their hometown of LA. Greg works in marketing, and Landon owns a club. Greg schedules an event at the club, not realizing that Landon is the one that holds the club. When they see each other for the first time in over ten years, they both realize that they still have feelings for each other, but first, they must let go of the hurt from the past.

I enjoyed the dynamic between Landon and Greg and watching as they had a second chance. I loved their group of friends. They were crazy, and you could tell that each one had their own story to be told, but no matter how different they were, they still came together as an interesting group. Landon was a drama queen, but Greg knew just how to temper that drama and bring Landon down to an even keel.

second chance romance really isn't my trope. i usually find that the reason they didn't work out the first time was stupid or too much to overcome. this time, they weren't completely honest with each other as teens and the rest of the story made up for it.

Landon is dramatic and messy while Gregory is in control and composed. They remember things very differently and it's easy to see why things didn't work out with other people in the decade they were appart.

" Even through his hurt, Landon had been, and always would be his priority. "

Kate Hawthorne writes really creative kink and intriguing characters.

This book sets up all the later books in the series and it's hard not to want to start them all at the same time.

Verity is a standout character and I love them, A+ friendship.

This is a really enjoyable second chance romance between a dom, Gregory, and a submissive, Landon. For four years in high school, they were boyfriends who early on realized that their dynamic was a D/s relationship. They loved each other, but broke up when they attended different universities. Now, years later they accidentally meet and reconnect. They are both more experienced and mature, but are they ready to commit to a long-term relationship? This book has a lot of passion and a deep love with a great HEA.

Such an intense romance! I don't often read 2nd chance romances as I don't like it when the lovers drifted apart. In here there were held apart by evil external forces until their love died. Heart breaking backstory, fantastic novel.

I think these kind of books really rely on intense chemistry between the mcs to make them work and im not sure that was the case here. Landon was supposed to be mid 30s but honestly came across like a bratty 18yr old for most of this. Also how is he a multi millionaire successful business owner yet he only has 2 members of staff and does most of the work himself. It didn't feel right somehow?

DNF 31% I don’t even know where to start with this review. The book opens with a rocky start you don’t know anything except for Greg’s an ass; which is wrong because Greg is probably the most mature person in the whole book (at least from what I read). Everyone else acts like they’ve had one too many shots or their personalities are just one dimensional and stiff. I kind of enjoyed the romance I saw between Landon and Greg but the rest of the book kind of made everything confusing. Also I’m not trying to put down “them” pronouns but when they were used in the beginning it was a little hard to understand what was going on since everything was really vague and then throw in them I was like “them” or them as in both of them. Sorry I just couldn’t finish.

As teens, Landon and Gregory were an item, but a misunderstanding led to Landon leaving for college and leaving Gregory.
Years later, Landon inherits money from his grandfather, so he sets up his own BDSM club where - surprise, surprise - he meets Gregory again who is a mentor to a couple wanting to marry at Landon's club.
Slightly trite in the ease that Gregory drops into Dom mode, and Landon into sub mode.
A little odd, but OK

Well researched and passionate

I was hesitant about reading a BDSM book, as the few I read left me with a sour taste. However, I am glad I took a chance with Ms. Hawthorne . This is the first BDSM book where I feel, I have learnt about the subject in a clear, coherent, true-to-live, riveting , emotional and passionate way.

Worth the Risk is a M/M story about a D/s couple. It's fast paced , intense and emotionally charged narrative and provoking plotline keeps you engaged and interested. The main and secondary characters are charismatic and relatable.

I am looking forward reading and learning about the many BDSM kinks, plays and scenes in the next books of Giving Consent book series.
