The InheritanceA Port Henry NovelRiley Maxwell spends her days working from her New York City apartment, designing websites and copywriting for clients around the world. Most of her exposure to people outside of her home base is her visits to the local Chinese takeout place down the street. Satisfied with her life of solitude, Riley’s summer gets turned upside-down when a wealthy client passes away, leaving her a beach house in Port Henry, New York, one of the wealthiest shore towns on the East Coast. When the Great Dane, Scrappy, who—surprise!—she also inherited, gets sick, she takes him to the nearest veterinarian, where she meets Donovan Hunter. A ridiculously good-looking playboy, Donovan immediately gets under Riley’s skin, and she can’t wait to be rid of the house, the dog, and Port Henry. Dr. Hunter, on the other hand, can’t get enough of Riley’s sass and how different she is from the usual summer crowd. As the summer passes and Dr. Hunter runs out of made-up reasons to get Riley and Scrappy back into the office, he cooks up a new plan to catch her attention, setting a plan in motion to get the girl, and the dog.

THE INHERITANCE (A Port Henry Novel) by Amy Briggs is a contemporary women’s fiction with a mystery subplot. I do not agree with the romantic comedy description.
Riley Maxwell is a reasonably successful freelance writer and copywriter who does it all from her small New York City apartment. Riley prefers work over people. Her world is her writing and she only ventures out into the neighborhood for food.
She is offered the amazing opportunity to write the biography of the wealthy Jamison Prescott from Port Henry, who requires all of Riley’s time and he pays for the privilege. When she is notified that Jamison has died, she is devastated. They respected each other and were friends. What comes as the ultimate surprise is that Jamison has left everything to Riley in his will. He not only leaves Riley all of his wealth, but also his beach house in ritzy Port Henry and his young Great Dane, Scrappy.
Donovan Hunter has succeeded in moving up the social ladder in Port Henry. He has gone from being the son of the help to the successful veterinarian to the rich and famous in Port Henry. Good looking and single, he especially enjoys the summer crowd and the influx of females looking for a summer fling and nothing more.
When Scrappy gets sick, Riley takes him to Donovan. She is not interested in anyone or anything in Port Henry and cannot wait to leave it behind and return to her apartment in the city, but Donovan suddenly finds he is only interested in the new sassy heir.
Donovan wants Riley to stay and give their relationship a chance at least for the summer. Riley does not know what she wants to do about her all new found inheritance, but there is definitely a mystery involved in why Jamison left everything to her.
This is an O.K. romance read, but I really did not connect with Riley or Donovan. All the elements were there, but I felt like I was just reading about two characters, I did not really fall into the story. The author also left the main characters as boyfriend/girlfriend, not a HEA ending. I did love Scrappy though and he added some funny moments. As I was progressing through the story, I kept waiting to find out about Jamison and his connection to Riley, but you only get a partial answer at the end and then a cliff-hanger on the mystery. I was disappointed because the description had me believing this was a standalone, but it is not. Not what I was hoping for, but others might find it cute and want to continue on for the resolution of the mystery.
When Riley's mentor of sorts passes and leaves her his entire estate, which includes a beach house, and a big, clumsy, but lovable Great Dane puppy named Scrappy, she's entirely unsure what to make of the entire situation. So she heads out to Port Henry to take stock of her new life. What she finds just may be the best thing (person) to ever happen to her. When I read the prequel to The Inheritance in the One Hot Summer Anthology, I knew I had to read the full length novel to come, and I'm glad I got the chance, because I wasn't disappointed with how it all played out. The only thing that could have made it better is if there hadn't been a huge cliffhanger (YES, unfortunately, I said there's a freaking CLIFFHANGER!) and I now have to wait for another installment to find out how Riley reacts to the bombshell Bernard laid on her at the end of The Inheritance. Riley, Donovan, Scrappy, Bernard, and Toni make for very entertaining reading. I especially loved how Donovan is just this really sweet veterinarian who is flummoxed by the newcomer Riley, and fumbles around trying to get her to stay in Port Henry without actually telling her that's what he's doing. And the secondary characters of Toni, Donovan's assistant and friend, Bernard the butler of sorts who's like this wise older man with all the answers and love for his now deceased friend and employer...yeah, this is a complete world here, and I'm dying to know what happens next! This was lighthearted and fun with a bit of a mystery and a little cliffy at the end that has you wanting the next book to see where it leads.
When you first meet Donovan he comes off as arrogant and a ladies man. Only he’s more than that. He’s smart, sexy, sweet and gentle. You fall in love with how he is to the animals and his interactions with his bestie that works for him are a hoot. She tells it like it is to him. When Donovan meets Riley, they don’t get off to a good start. She sees him as arrogant and a player. ONly she wears on him especially with how he is with Scrappy and want to get to know him beyond the attraction she feels. As does Donovan, he wants more than a fling and wants to show her he isn’t what she thinks. They go on some sweet dates and learn about one each other.
Riley is a recluse really. She is sweet and kind but also wary of people. Never did she expect to inherit anything much less a fortune and end up outside the city in Port Henry. This scares and intrigues her. Now she wants to know even more about the man she was writing a biography on. She wants to know his life and why her. As she is learning this she meets Donovan and has to learn how to handle the big puppy named Scrappy. To me Scrappy is the by far the most enteraining one of all. ONly because he is like a little kid and helps get these two together.
The story is fun as we watch Riley and Donovan get closer to one another and find out about who the other is. Fun to see Riley handle Scrappy and watch her figure out the mystery of her benefactor. You are entertained and intrigued but also smile and just enjoy the ride of seeing Riley and Donovan fall in love and Riley begin to find out answers to things.
Donovan has always looked forward for the summer because that's the only time he let loose while working hard as a vet in Port Henry. Having been raised as the son of the help and now making it in life, makes him want to enjoy his life. He never realises it that he has been living his life the wrong way. Little did he know, someone's going to rock his summer..
Riley's arrival to Port Henry wasn't something she would have thought she would ever do. That's because she likes to live in her own bubble and she hate "peopling". But a sudden death of a dear friend and suddenly inheriting his house in Port Henry had her moving out of her comfort zone. Not only that, she also inherited a his ginormous dog that would eat just about anything. But this dog was what led her to Donovan. Port Henry was not permanent for her, but would Donovan change her mind or at least for the summer?
I liked the plot of the story. I like how Donovan changed his ways and his attempts trying to "court" her was just so cute. I thought it was a complete standalone book from the blurb. But then I thought it was a bit short and when I got to the end of it, it ends with a cliffhanger. I just wish that the wait for the continuation doesn't take too long..
The Inheritance was a super adorable story that had me smiling, but the side of mystery really sucked me in. Donovan is a vet in Port Henry, who only lets loose in the summertime, as he never wants to go back to being the help's son. Of course, that isn't any way to live life, and he's trying to change it up a bit, but it's when Riley comes crashing into Port Henry which really changes his life. She's not exactly happy to be there, as she's a bit of a loner, but when her friend passes away leaving her a house there, well, she moves out of her comfort zone. But the best part was the HUGE dog she inherited as well, which really had me laughing a ton. It's also the way she came face to face with Donovan, since Scrappy is definitely something else, and frankly, really stole the show for me. I really loved Riley, but it took a brief minute to fall for Donovan, since he did come off a bit differently than he was. It's a sweet story which I finished off in an afternoon, and at first, I thought it was just a short(ish) read, but it's going to be a continuation of their story which ended on a cliffy for now, and I for one, can't wait for more. So, come along with me on this entertaining ride by one clicking The Inheritance, as I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The Inheritance (Port Henry series book 1) by Amy Briggs
While I absolutely dislike books that don't wrap things up in a pretty bow at the end this was a good read but please put in the summary that it's only Book 1 and continues to the next book, please? That being said I'd still give the story a solid 4 stars.
Riley Maxwell wonders if she could be agoraphobic as she works from home, loves online shopping and favorite restaurants on speed dial. But when Jameson Prescott offers her a contract to write his memoirs and enough money to make his the only book she'll work on of course she's going to accept this assignment.
Imagine her shock when he suddenly passes away leaving her every thing including a Great Dane puppy. Now she'll go to Port Henry to see the mansion and manservant Bernard Dubois who is keeping secrets that she must find out answers for. But when Scrappy (Scooby Doo's small sidekick) decides to eat a pair of shoes and a tree meeting Dr. Donovan Hunter the town veterinarian. Once you get passed the pair of shoes then scratch your head on the TREE (what size was the tree??) you'll find a budding romance between Donovan and Riley makes this a interesting read but to find the secret and the ending will have to wait for the next book.
First of all, I'd like to say that the cover for The Inheritance is absolutely adorable! It's so unique, considering this is a romantic story, but it's ideal for Scrappy.
I really enjoyed the whole premise behind this story--Donovan, the town vet in the beach city of Port Henry, and Riley, a freelance writer who gets left an inheritance from one of her clients, including his Great Dane dog. This was an easy story to read, and you couldn't help but to fall in love with the endearing story line. Not only did the author keep it fun where Scrappy was concerned, but there was also a bit of mystery tossed in that left you guessing how things might turn out in the end.
Riley and Donovan weren't the most ideal couple, not in the beginning anyways, but I found myself truly pulling for them. I'm eager to find out how it's all going to play out in the next installment and if Riley will get the answers she's looking for.
Super cute and enjoyable read that you can devour in one evening. So happy I stumbled across this story. As a pet lover, Amy Briggs brightened my day with Scrappy and his puppy antics!!
I love Donovan and Riley! They're the couple you're so happy for that have finally found what looks like their forever home in each other. Thank goodness this is going to be a series because I definitely need to know what happens next! Riley, a self professed city girl, inherits a house, a butler, and a Scrappy out in the seaside country and has zero clue as to why. Along the way of trying to figure it out, she runs into Donovan and sparks fly! Sassy sparks! I love Riley's sass. Between her sass, and the sassiness of Toni, Donovan's assistant, the story is lively and entertaining and fun to read. I can't wait to read the next book! If you're a 'no cliffy' kind of reader you may want to try this one. Yes, it's a bit of cliffhanger BUT only because the mystery is revealed and now you need to know more. Since the big question is answered it's only a little hill, not a plunging into darkness kind of cliffy - in my opinion.

The Inheritance is a cute and sweet read with a dash of mystery! After being hired to write the memoirs of a Jameson Prescott, Riley becomes super close to him. When tragedy strikes she's learning all new secrets that she never could have imagined.
I loved Riley's spirit. She's a sassy, take no shit type of chick and I loved that about her. At first I wasn't sure I would like Donovan, he was a playboy and came across as superficial. But he does redeem himself pretty quickly. These two together are adorable. They are very sweet with each other.
I enjoyed The Inheritance, and I enjoyed the blossoming love starting with Riley and Donovan. I'm excited to see where Riley, her dog Scrappy, and Donovan end up in the next book!
I really enjoyed this story! 5 dog bone stars for this one!! Meet Riley, she's befriended a gentleman, and is writing a book for him. When he passes away, she finds she's inherited all his things, including an estate in Port Henry NY. When she travels there she also finds that it includes a big clumsy dog named Scrappy! When she meets the vet Donovan, she's attracted to him, and he finds himself longing for more with the new girl in town! As they navigate her new situation, and the mystery around Jameson Prescott! I think you will love this one! I'm so looking forward to more on the story of Riley & Donovan and yes Scrappy too!! Grab this one today!
A sweet and funny romantic comedy. Riley is smart, sassy, can not stand most people and independent. She is shocked when she is left an inheritance from a client she had for 18 months even though he was a father figure to her. When she first meet good looking Donovan, she pegged him good. But is chagrined when she finds out he is a vetenarian. He uses her inherited puppy as an excuse to see her again. Can he romance her to stay. What is the secret for the real reason she Inherited? Love Scrappy. I have chocolate Lab that was extremely clumsy, ate rocks, tear tissues and toilet paper. But when he gives you the puppy eyes, you melt. He also a big sucks and lays his head on your lap.
After reading part of this story in the One Hot Summer anthology I really wanted to read the conclusion of Riley and Donovan’s story. This was a different and intriguing story. I was pleasantly surprised and invested in the characters and story. It was well written and moved along smoothly. But then it was the end and I was disappointed. Since this had already been continued from the novella version I hadn’t realized it would be another continuation. If it weren't for that I would have given it a higher rating.
