What doesn't make you evil, makes you stronger.
Is Nev strong enough?

Nevaeh faces the overpowering gravity of her choice to save those she loves while striving for strength to fight her greatest threat--herself.

While she struggles to keep herself--and the unpredictable beast inside her--in check, she has to play the part of a Dark Celata and fulfill every wicked task they command of her using her supernatural abilities. It's the only chance she has to get George and Gavyn back. However, with each mission she goes on, the line between the woman she used to be and the monster she's becoming grows thinner.

Archard watches the world suffer for his mistakes. In an attempt to right his wrongs--and heal the hole in his heart--he chases Nev, but every lead ends with more questions about who she is, where she comes from, and how to save her--if he can save her at all.

Will Nevaeh survive the soul-severing decision she's made?

Will those who love Nevaeh survive her?

Haven Cage lives in the North Carolina foothills with her wonderfully supportive husband and two temperamental rabbits. She’s rolling into “midlife” while working in the medical field and savoring her favorite things. You can usually find her spending way too much money on coffee, gardening, learning about herbal medicine, progressing her spiritual life, or writing.

She’s always appreciated the Arts and loved drawing and painting in her younger days. However, a few years after becoming a mother, she sought out a different way to express herself. Haven wanted something to cultivate who she was as a woman and as an individual—outside of life as a mother and wife.

Though she wasn’t much of a reader growing up, Haven fell in love with wordsmithing and soon found the love of books she didn’t have in grade school. Writing and reading offered a way to work through dreams, emotions, and trauma, all while allowing her to nurture and develop a newly found piece of herself.

Over a decade has passed since putting her first novel words to paper, and Haven still enjoys creating gritty stories you feel to the bone.

Severance is book 2 of the Faltering Souls series. This book is told in mostly alternating first person dual POV for the main characters Nevaeh and Archard. This book is not a standalone and must be read in series order, following book 1, Falter.

Severance started with the scene that Falter ended on. Just as that book ended on a cliffhanger, this one does too. And what a cliffhanger it is!! I can't wait to find out what happens next.

If you have not already read/listened to Falter, you shouldn't continue reading this review as there will be some spoilers for book 1.

Book 1 ended with Nevaeh renouncing god and accepting the devil as she knew that was her only way to go to hell to attempt to free George's soul. Plus, Gavyn sacrificed himself to become dark to follow Layla to hell because he was trying to save Nevaeh, so Nev now has to try to save him too.

There is a whole lot of dark in this book and if you are sensitive to things such as torture and rape, you may want to consider if this book will be too much for you to handle. Luckily for me, as long as animals aren't harmed, I don't have many limits. I can handle the pitch black kind of dark so this was all good for me.

There was still a good amount of mystery and suspense with this book and even though I figured out one big mystery about 67% in, I was still hooked. I enjoyed trying to follow the bread crumbs and piece clues together. Since a lot of this book dealt with Nevaeh's transformations, her gifts/curses, and her inner struggles, we didn't get much in the love and romance department but this book isn't meant to be a romance so nothing lost there. I just happen to be someone who likes a little romance sprinkled into most of my stories so I am always keeping an eye out.

We were introduced to a few new characters and the story has continued to evolve. I still loved the same characters in this book so my loyalties haven't changed from one book to the next. We didn't get to see much of George in this book but I loved the scenes that he was in. I don't want to give anything away so I won't talk about any of the other characters or what happened with them. You must find out for yourself. It will be quite the exciting ride though. This book is enthralling.

Book 1 is still my favorite from this series. The writing felt a bit different this time around but that is to be expected given the story became much darker. I can't wait to see how it goes in book 3, Contrition.

I stole this paragraph from my review of Falter because I feel like it needs to be restated here as well. Even though this book has a lot of discussion about angels, demons, faith, humanity, spirituality, heaven, hell, god, and redemption, it was done in a way that didn't feel like bible thumping. I am not religious and can get turned off by really preachy books, but this did not feel like preaching, just a fantasy story. I think atheists would be able to still enjoy this book just fine as the work of fiction that it is.

As for the narration, just a heads up, this is a different narrator from book 1. The narrator in book 1 knocked my socks off. She was incredible. I was a bit disappointed to find out that a different narrator was used for Severance. This narrator was good. She spoke clearly and was easy to understand. She had good pacing. My only issue with the narrator was the lack of distinct voices. It was odd that the most distinct voice that was easy to identify at all times was the side character, Layla. Another side character, Arkin, also got a distinct voice. Unfortunately, there were several times where I had to start a chapter over to make sure I knew whose POV it was. Considering it was either Nevaeh, a female character, or Archard, a male character, it kind of bummed me out that I couldn't tell right away. If you listen to the whole thing straight through or are someone who listens to the end of a chapter before pausing the book so you can pick back up with the next chapter, this likely will not be such a problem for you. I was just listening anytime I could, be it 10 minutes at a time or an hour, so I found that to be a challenge.

I definitely recommend this book and this series. It is so creative and exciting. 4.5 Stars.

Serverance will pick up right where Falter concluded. It continues Neveah's struggles as she tries and saves George's life. This book it told from duel POV's. You will be engrossed, enthralled, and intriqued by everything that goes into making Neveah and Archard's journey perfect. As Neveah's gifts progress so does the best inside of her. The more she does the darks bidding the more she has to keep the beast in check. Archard has to deal with his mistakes in the world he choose. You will go through every emotion known to man in this book. Just when you think you have it all figured out Haven send your emotions through an I tense rollercoaster ride. You will love it.
In Severance you see Neveah still struggling to hold onto what goodness she has left. Her desperation has her staying true to her word and commitment. Archard, what a man, he will stop and nothing at finding Neveah. He is will stop at notjing to return her to his arms i mean come on she is his one true love. He tried to hunt her down only to loss her and the leads run cold. I do so hope these two find their happily ever after. Neveah is one of my favorite characters.
Haven Cage is an amazing author. She brings a refreshing spin on writing and helps you get out of any book slump with her amazing books. Truely phenomenal.

Dam! I did not see that one coming. That ending it… well it
just through me. I am so ready for book 3. This book is just
as artfully crafted as the first. I was so wrapped up in it, time
got away from me. And before I knew it, it was 4am. So be
prepared it is next to impossible to put down.

This is the contusion of Nevaeh's tale. She is stuck doing the
devils work in hell and the things the Atter does to her ticked
me off. It was hard to read that part it was the rape she
endured that got to me. Lots of people from her past make
appearances in this book. As Archard tries to find a way to
save her. But what she has to do in the end was truly horde.
But what Archard does may doom them all. Now they just
have to find a way to fix it. And when you find out who the
Atter really is. Let’s say it made me sick. And wanting to kill
him for what he did to Nevaeh.

Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you
enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book,
please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it
when you do; they value your opinions too

This is the second book in this series and it picks up very nicely where the first book ends. Things get a whole lot darker and deeper in this book and I found that I had to take a brief one day break while reading it as it was getting so heavy and I was so immersed in this story that I needed to back away. The writing is so good that you do find yourself completely immersed in this story and can't wait to find out what is going to happen to everybody and find out what Neveah decides. Once again this book has a bit of a cliffhanger (although not as bad as the first one) so you'll want to be sure to pick up the third book as you're nearing the end of the this one so you can jump right in. I'm not usually a paranormal reader/fan but Haven is such a fantastic writer that I really am enjoying this series and am fully vested in it and finding out what the conclusion is!

Well, that certainly ended with a bang!

Severance is book 2 in the Faltering Souls Trilogy from Haven Cage. Book 2 picks up precisely where the first one ended. You will need to read book 1 first.

Nev is literally in Hell in book 2. Her unorthodox decisions have placed her into the hands of the Devil but she sees it as the only way to save her family and friends - George and Gavyn. And Archard is coming unglued in his plight to save Neh.

Severance is much darker and more twisted than Falter. I assure you it is not for the faint of heart. Secrets from Nev's past come to light as she comes face to face with her parents. Once again Nev takes the fate of everyone into her own hands and makes decisions that will jeopardize Heaven and Hell.

The ending is one heck of a cliffhanger. Thankfully the trilogy is complete and i can move on to book 3.

First of all, bravo to the narrator for keeping in character, even though she's not the same person who narrated the first book. That is tough to pull off. I'm really enjoying this series so far, even with all of the angst bits (which I generally avoid) because this is such a cool story. I definitely recommend to paranormal romance readers, especially if you like the darker stories. one last thing: I'm really, really glad book three is coming out soon. The way this one ended? Pure evil genius. Well done, all the way around.

Fascinating

Neveah has had such turmoil in this story. She is in hell tortured by Bron. Archard searches for her, but is lost without a clue. George has been trapped in hell and Neveah plans to get him back, one way or another. Gayven has chosen the dark side saying the he did it for her, but who really knows. I didn't see some of this coming, but was surprised by the way the story shifted.

You will find yourself on the edge of your seat, wishing for a different outcome. But you will be so entranced by the characters, that you must continue.

Severance picks up right where Falter left off. Falter must be read first.

Nevaeh is struggling to keep her goodness. She is in the pits of Hell and punished every time her goodness shines through. She knew her decision would be difficult but hoped it wouldn't take her so long to find George. All she wants is to rescue George's soul and get it to Heaven where it belongs.

Archard is trying to comes to terms with Nevaeh's decision and how the world is changing, based on that decision. Archard blames himself for not protecting her better. He keeps searching for her and a way to save her. Archard refuses to give up hope.

Severance is darker than Falter. Nevaeh has to survive multiple punishments and a part of her wants them. The longer she stays in Hell the more her powers are growing and the darkness is trying to overpower her. This story is a battle not just between good and evil, Heaven and Hell but also between fate and the power of free will. But could they be the same thing for Nevaeh?

The ending was sad, exciting, and heartbreaking. I can't wait to see what Haven Cage has in store for the third and final book.

Severance (Faltering Souls #2) was a great read by Haven Cage. Navaeh faces the gravity of her choice to save those she loves. She struggles to keep herself and the beast inside her in check. Archard watches as the world suffers for his mistakes. He chases Nev to heal the hole in his heart and right his wrongs. But all he gets is more questions everywhere he turns. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

This is book 2 in the series. You need to start out with book 1 in my opioion. This series just keeps getting better as it goes on. It is a roller coster threw the book with a lot of different things going but it is well worth it. Love the book and recommend it.

I received an ARC and am giving an unbias opinion.

Whining Angels

These angels whine more than any others I have found in all of my fantasy novels. They do not behave like immortals.

Severance by Haven Cage, is a book that will swallow you up from the first page and will not let you go until the last page.

"Nevaeh faces the overpowering gravity of her choice to save those she loves while striving for strength to fight her greatest threat--herself."

I have to say book 2 of the series Faltering Souls is my favorite so far out of the series. Both books are awesome, I was able to see the growth in haven Cage as an author and I enjoyed Severance a little more than Falter. Severance had me on the edge of my seat at times, balling like a little baby, and wanting to yell at certain characters, it was an emotional roller coaster I would be happy to go on again.

This is book two in the series and it is just as jam pact of thrill, emotions, and passion as the first book, if not more so. The book starts off literally right where the first book ends which is a great refresher if you are not reading them back to back - it pulls you back in and never lets you go until it is finished. I love the fast pace of the events in the book. There are a few down moments, but Severance is mostly an emotional go, go, go book and a perfect addition to the first book.

As with the first book, Falter, Nevaeh is a strong willed girl who fights for what she believes in. In book two, Nevaeh is no different. She tries to save the souls of those that she loves and means the most to her all while trading her soul over to evil. She puts up one hell of a fight to not let the evil take complete control of her soul, but sometimes the evil was stronger than she was. While Nevaeh is fighting to save her would be father and her friend's souls, Archard, her love, is attempting to save Nevaeh's soul. It is a battle that is not short lived or easily won.

I would recommend this book and series and cannot wait to see what else Haven Cage has up her sleeve.

Uncaged Book Reviews:

Be warned, this book is so emotionally charged that it will leave you mentally and physically exhausted at times and the main character gets very little down time, or happiness in this book. Personally, I’d like more of a balance and I still wonder how much more that Nevaeh can take before she just completely loses or gives up the fight. The only light at the end of the tunnel is if Archard can bring her back or not. Again, this book ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared. You can bet that I’m going to be onboard for the finale on this one.

This is a great second part to this series. I was glad to see that Nevaeh was growing stronger as a person and with her powers. She is a strong female but still has weakness. There were times she should have listened to what others were telling her and I hope it doesn't come back and bite her in the butt. I can't wait until the next book. I almost didn't finish it just so I wouldn't have to wait long until the next one but I had to find out what happened. Lol

Severance is the second book in the Faltering Souls Series and begins on the last scene of Falter book one.
I find Nevaeh to be very interesting, she has lots of strength of character even when she is struggling with her inter being she finds the will to do right over wrong and doesn’t falter from her goal.
Lots of history has been revealed, more understanding of the characters and hopefully where this story is leading, however just when we are getting somewhere cliffhanger. I for one will wait for Contrition book three and the answer is Nevaeh a savior of a destroyer.
Vanessa Vasquez is the narrator, I personally did not enjoy her performance as well as the narrator of the first book, but that is solely my opinion.

Originally reviewed at West Coast Book Reviews.

Severance picks up several months after the heart-lurching ending of Falter, Book 1, and while building on the previous story it moves things along with good action, stronger characters and easy to visualize settings. Also, this is sort of a combination review of both books one and two since I found I can't really talk about one without touching on the other. (I tried!)

Cage's characters and settings quickly won me over and remained consistently strong throughout both books. My faves in Falter were Gavyn, George and Naveah. Why? Well, they're honest, loyal and above all else, good. Cage let them show who they are enough for me to be certain of my opinion. She built on this foundation by proving it in their interactions with each other.

Cage shows us her settings the same way she does here characters. Gavyn's restaurant, the streets and even Hell are solid and most importantly, memorable. Her character interactions with those places bring them to life to the point where the next time the action took us to a place we had been to before, the mood lingered, flavoring the current scene. As a visual reader, these books kept me in my element. Putting them down felt like I was really leaving places I knew.

I always feel that unless the action moves the plot and takes full advantage of the characters and the scene, it's lost an opportunity to be as driving and strong as it can be. The action (both small and omg wth nooooo) uses everything at its disposal.

Both Falter and Severance are easy to get lost in. Cage's writing was strong in Falter and even better in Severance. I haven't read much new adult, but I found these books solid and dark, dark, dark.

I recommend Falter and Severance for all lovers of dark new adult fantasy. I loved both and will dive in to book 3 as soon as I can!

it was a rollercoaster this one, can't wait for the next book already.

it played well with the twists it did and the revelations were pretty shocking and oh my god the end, I thought I was going to die or something, I liked that this one gives a little background on nevaeh family and what transcended before and a reason why to what is happening in the present and why some things were so distorted and difficult in falter.

the characters developed greatly in this one and I can only image what will happen next.

Fast paced with more emotion than the first book, Severance will keep you hooked and leave you wanting more. Mrs. Cages graphic descriptions will leave your imagination on overload. I can't wait to see what she does in the next installment in this series. I highly recommend this book and encourage any who wishes to read this one to start with Falter (book 1) before starting this one.

Severance.....Neveah's continuing struggle for goodness

SEVERANCE picks up right where FALTER concluded. Haven Cage continues her enthralling story of Neveah and Archard's journey. Told from two different perspectives, tis story will have you totally engrossed and intrigued until the very end.

Ms Cage has written a book that is so full of emotions that your will become exhausted as you read it. Your mind is constantly running from one scene to the next, trying to take everything in. This is such a positive, as far as the story goes, because it keeps you intrigued and wanting to continually read - it is almost impossible to put the book down.

As in FALTER, Neveah is still struggling to retain her goodness. But her desperation to find George's soul and ensure that it reaches heaven, is what continually forces her to abide by the decision that she has made. Archard, on the other hand, refuses to give up any hope of finding Neveah. She is his one true love - his purpose for living. He is determined to her her return to the safety of his arms.

Once agan, Haven has given her readers an extraordinary story. Darker than Book 1, SEVERANCE is mainly about Neveah's ability to understand her growing powers and to survive the punishments that she is put through in Hell. A superb book, that will have your heart beating rapidly and your eyes shedding several tears.

Book 3 will definitely bring this story to a whole new level - I can't wait!!!!

Never the complicated

So many things going on in this young lady's life. So many choices. Good versus bad, and how to handle what's changing. How would it affect you? Even with everything going on in her world, she's still concerned for others. Love the new powers and abilities. Love that a lot of the dots are connecting, and the backstory. Love is the key.
