Este manga me sorprendió muchísimo. Básicamente la historia va de que hace un tiempo se cometió un cuádruple asesinato en una mansión que quedaba en una isla bastante apartada de Japón, así que, en el presente, un grupo de estudiantes universitarios que son muy fans de las novelas de misterio y de los crímenes reciben una invitación para pasar una semana en la otra mansión de esa isla, la cual diseñó una de las personas a las que asesinaron.
El punto es que van a esa mansión decagonal y el primer día se encuentran en una mesa unas tabletas que dicen “primera víctima”, “segunda víctima”, “detective”, “asesino”, etc. Todos quedan muy confundidos porque creen que no hay nadie más en la isla. Ahora, hubo algunos estudiantes que decidieron no ir a la isla, pero a ellos también empiezan a pasarles cosas raras y reciben cartas misteriosas.
Este primer tomo es tremendamente introductorio, pero deja creado el tono de la que promete que será una historia muy interesante.

A group of students who love crime literature, convene on an desolate island with a dark past - supposedly a gardener murdered the family who he worked for, to then completely disappear.
When they have arrived in the titular Decagon House, where the murdered family used to live, we jump to ex-members of the crime literature group, still back in Japan. They have been sent anonymous letters saying they were involved in the supposed accidental death of one of the group. And then it turns out that more have received such a letter, and the thought pops up that it has been sent by the disappeared gardener. Oh and then the island group suspects one of them is pulling a prank, suggesting someone in the group will die, and you can guess what this volume ends on.
The book does have the typical problem of manga, where the first book is full of stage setting, and ends exactly when the story starts to gather steam. The large cast is another problem, which is complicated more by quite a few people being involved in the previous murders.
All that said, it's a fun book.

The Japanese cult classic mystery in manga form
"A hugely enjoyable, page-turning murder mystery with one of the best and most-satisfying conclusions you'll ever read: clever enough that you're unlikely to guess it, but simple enough that you'll kick yourself when it's revealed. That's what has made it a classic in Japan."
This is how the English translation of the novel, which was originally published in 1987, was promoted.
It really piques your interest, doesn't it?
This debut of Yukito Ayatsuji was apparently credited with launching the shinhonkaku movement which restored Golden Age style plotting and fair-play clues to the Japanese mystery scene, which had been dominated by the social school of mystery for several decades. It is also said to have influenced the development of the wildly popular anime movement.
Be that as it may, let's see how I enjoyed the first volume of the English manga-adaptation of this novel, which was illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara and released by publisher Kodansha on August 17th.
"The members of a particular university's Mystery Club travel to a ten-sided house on a remote island... which just happens to have been the scene of a gristly, and unsolved, mass murder. Armed with details of the murder and keys to the property, they set out to dig deeper... but can they trust the "facts" of the case? And moreover... can they trust each other?"
As always, this first installment is mostly about presenting all the characters and the environment in which the action will take place.
On the one hand we follow 7 university students who are member of the Mystery Novel Research Association. They all have nicknames that refer to western mystery writers they admire: Ellery (Queen), (John Dickson) Carr, (Gaston) Leroux, (Edgar Allen) Poe, Agatha (Christie), Orczy, Van. Together they head to stay one week on the uninhabited island of Tsunojima, six months after architect Nakamura, his wife and their two servants were murdered there and their Blue Mansion was burned down trying to hide the fourfold murder case. On the same island Nakamura also built the Decagon House where the students reside now.
On the other hand we see how 2 former members of the Mystery Novel Research Association are getting strange letters and start a little investigation.
These two simultaneous storylines alternate and help to create more tension.
There are a few minor downpoints, to me at least.
Of course there must be background info given to get the story started, but I've got the feeling that the first storyline sometimes missed a bit of punch.
This is partially due to the fact that the characters are rather flat and thus interchangeable. But then again, this is often the case in similar murder stories.
What's also irritating are some of the childish reactions and the accompanying drawing style at those moments. This may be normal in some manga forms, but in this story we're not dealing with immature high school youngsters, but with university students who are all in their twenties. Thus such reactions seem rather awkward and not fitting in the mystery plot.
But otherwise this was a very enjoyable read and it certainly managed to make me curious enough to read the next installments, which is why I rounded up the 3,5*.

In Japan the manga launched in August 2019 and the third volume came out on March 23rd 2021.
In the USA the first installment was published by Kodansha on August 17th 2021.
But for those who already read this volume and can't wait to know how this story continues: no worries!
The second volume will be available on September 21st and the third volume will be released less than a month later on October 19th.
Perfect timing for Halloween and the winter months, when it's nice to curl up on the couch with a good murder mystery 😉

Short Summary
Based from the original novel from Yukito Ayatsuji tells the story that is set in a dual perspective, one coming from 7 University students who were in a Detective Club and went on an uninhabited island called Tsunojima Island, where the famous "Decagon" house is located and from the mainlands where another two of the club members who did not join the expedition.
From the island, they were set to stay a week, without any phone service as the island was known to be a murder scene from a heinous crime of the Nakamura Family. The mystery started when one morning, 7 set of names naming 1 Detective, 1 Killer and 5 victims have been placed on the table and none of the members owned up to it.
Whilst in the mainland, the mystery of the anonymous sender from the name of a dead man provoked some questions. Are they all just a big coincidence or is it the start of a heinous plan of a crime well-planned?
My Thoughts
I had absolutely LOVED the premise of the manga, the artstyle and even the characters. Albeit this volume only showed the start of the murder and the questions behind the mystery letters, it has invoked some curiosity, on how will everything unfold at the end.
I love the idea of the characters taking the nicknames based on famous mystery/crime writers. The names like Ellery, Poe, Doyle and Agatha is something that we find very familiar especially for anyone who is used to reading mystery books. The idea of 7 students from various departments in a prestigious university, subjected themselves to 1 whole week of adventure that will cause various questions in an island known for a heinous murder is just something that made me scared just thinking about it. Each character is distinct in their own way and whilst they don't exactly bond with each other, I can't wait to see how the mystery unfolds.
The first volume plot focused more on the mystery, the previous case and the perspective of the other two club members that did not go on the island with them. As this series will have three volumes in total, I feel like everything will start to unfold in the next volume as the end of this particular volume left me with so many questions and I keep searching if there are any updates.
Overall, I had enjoyed this manga very much and I can't wait for it to be released! The premise of the story is very similar to the novel and I love the art style in this book. The lines are defined and the the mangaka had portrayed and kept the level of suspense at bay.
Highly recommended for fans of crime thrillers and highly recommended to check the novel from the author too!

The manga is based on the novel of the same name. It is about a group of club members, their journey to that island, and their connections to the deaths and others trying to solve the crimes.
I really appreciate the art style, but I am not a fan of the story. The cliffhanger at the end of the volume is something, though. 😁

Un club universitario para los amantes del crimen con nombres de escritores famosos, una casa en la que se cometieron varios asesinatos en una isla desierta, el suspuesto culpable desaparecido, cartas con amenazas, alguien que no es quien dice ser y un monje y dos estudiantes jugando a los detectives.

Spannend und interessant mit echtem who done it Charakter. Hier war noch Aufbau und Einführung in den Fall, aber in Band 2 wird es dann richtig losgehen. Sehr guter Plottwist und auch mit 2 verschiedenen Plot Lines.

Is it better to read this adaptation having already read Ayatsuji's original novel or not? I asked myself that question a lot while reading. Partly this is because, for a fairly faithful adaptation, there are some significant changes, although they won't necessarily impact the story - Doyle's gender is changed (she was a he in the novel), the story has been moved from the late 1980s to 2018, and some of the omnipresent decagons have been omitted, presumably to save the artist's sanity. One of the pluses of these changes is that the manga gives more background into who the authors each character is named for is, since not everyone today is up on their Golden Age and Victorian mystery authors, and some of the character designs incorporate elements of their books, like Leroux's yellow hoodie as a reference to Gaston Leroux's Mystery of the Yellow Room. There's another element that's particularly well done but that would be a major spoiler to reveal; suffice it to say that I'm impressed.
The pacing thus far feels comparable with the novel, which is good, although we're spending more time with those on the mainland than on the island. The art is a little off-putting in terms of how faces are drawn, but given the whole murder mystery genre, I think that it works well. As of this volume I still feel like one ought to read the novel as well as this adaptation - but when, precisely, remains to be seen.

I think this was a great start to the manga series since it really made me curious about the mystery that is revealed from the first page. Reading the mange really made me want to read the novel since I am so impatient. I think the drawing style for the manga is really artsy and pleasant to the eye. I think it has a classic way of how a manga is usually drawn and it didn't push me away from the plot of the book. One thing that I would say is that this one had some info-dumping parts in the book. Even though it was giving you information for the case, it didn't make me lost in the story at all. The theories about what actually happened were fun to read as well since I can't really solve the mystery, I want to see the characters solve it.
Overall, I liked the first volume and I am interested to see how all the characters are involved in the case. The ending to the volume was kind of dramatic, but it makes sense for it to be like that. I am looking forward to reading the second volume when it comes out and I would love to review it on Netgalley as well.

Jilid pertamanya cover up cerita di bukunya sampai ke first murder nya. Agak kaget banyak perbedaan karakternya, tapi terkisap juga ada karakter xxx itu mirip sama yg xxx, kalau pas baca bukunya ngga kepikiran mereka sama. Ngga sabar menunggu vol. selanjutnya.

Este primer tomo se centra en la presentación de los personajes y los misterios que conforman la trama de la obra pues, aunque en un inicio parece que sólo hay uno, pronto se convertirá en dos en cuanto los protagonistas comienzan a vivir situaciones extrañas en la isla. Si bien los miembros del club de misterio de la isla parecen los protagonistas, otros tres personajes cobran relevancia de inmediato para tratar de resolver el misterioso incidente que sucedió en la isla medio año atrás, Kawaminami (Doyle/Conan), Morisu y Shimada. Al final, estos serán los personajes que ocupen la mayoría de las páginas de este primer tomo, con unas reflexiones interesantes que te mantienen en vilo continuamente.
Lo que más he de destacar de la obra es el arte, el dibujo me parece bellísimo y los personajes están diseñados para ser muy diferentes entre sí. Esto ayuda a distinguirlos, ya que los nombres japoneses a veces pueden ser complicados de recordar, aunque esto también se soluciona con los apodos del club del misterio, referencia a autores conocidos del mundo del terror y el misterio, como Agatha Christie. Las referencias a los autores y obras del mundo del misterio son otro de los factores que más destacan y que te hacen sonreír ante ello, a pesar de lo siniestro del manga.
Tal vez por su brevedad, en este primer tomo ya se presentan tantos personajes y datos que puede ser un poco saturante, me parece una obra que se debe leer despacio y analizando todo lo que los protagonistas puedan decir. Además, su capítulo final deja con muchas ganas de continuar leyendo y resolver los misterios que envuelven a nuestros personajes.

What is it about?
The members of a mystery book club went to a secluded island for a week-long journey where they planned to write their own mystery books in a decagonal-shaped house. It so happened that the murder of the island owner and his staff happened not too long ago, and the murderer was still on the loose. Weird things started happening and maybe, there's a killer among them.
At the same time, a former member of the mystery club received a mysterious letter at her home. She decided to spend her spring break to solve this case which might be connected to the murder of the Tsunojima island.
Here are my thoughts:
First of all, the art style is GORGEOUS, 5☆. I have read a handful of mangas but this one really exceeded my expectation. The lines were very fine and the artists drew the details amazingly. I fell in love at the first glance. I really REALLY love the portrayal of the characters too. It's easy to distinguish the face of each character.
The story itself was very enjoyable to me. Although there were some parts that took me awhile to understand especially there were a lot of names to be remembered here, but it kept me on my feet and made me want for more.
Also, THAT ENDING??? I want to know what happens next! I haven't read the novel yet but I will do VERY soon. I really cannot wait my mind is buzzing. I'm a bit suspicious of

I am quickly becoming addicted to these graphic novels mainly because the illustrations just add so much to the story. I think the major drawback for me is that it takes so long to read the entire series, or perhaps it is that it takes so long to produce the entire series. This one is absolutely amazing with regard to the graphics.... they are just so beautiful and well done. While the storyline was basically simple, the story is added to with the inclusion of additional characters as it progresses. I think this made it more difficult for me to keep track of who was doing what.
The murder club students, all seven of them go to this isolated island where the family was killed by the gardener. This was v 1.. so can't wait for the next one.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review, with thanks to the publisher and Netgalley.
Okay so I'm supposed to be on a Netgalley ban, but here we are. When I saw this, I immediately had to request it. A couple of months ago, I received the novel this graphic is based upon from Netgalley, and I absolutely loved it. Like top 10 books of 2021 kind of loved, so of course I had to ask for this. To my joy, I got accepted.
This story follows a group of university students who are all members of a murder mystery book club, they all have nicknames that correspond with famous mystery writers and they are on their way to a mystery that is a little closer to home. This group is a mixed bag definitely, and their dynamic is immediately set out as they reach the island. This island happens to be the former home of one of their old classmates, Chiori, who died while on a trip with them all, and after her death, her parents were murdered and their home burned to the ground. Now, the murder mystery group are staying in another building on the island. An eccentric decagonal house with seven bedrooms for seven guests, a kitchen, a bathroom and a central hall. When they wake up one morning, they are greeted by a number of plates laying out victims one through six, a detective and a murderer, hinting that something sinister is about to happen on the island.
Back on the mainland, a former member of the club receives a letter stating "The Chiori who you all murdered was my daughter". Is Chiori's father still alive and is he the one threatening to hurt the members isolated on the island? How do these letters tie to Chiori's accidental and tragic death and why have they come at the same time the current members are on the island?
While reading the novel, I never thought how good this would play out in a manga format and all I can say is that it definitely does. I think I almost enjoyed this format more than the novel. This manga not only modernises the story a bit more, but it also makes it possible to imagine the quirkiness of the house they are staying in and to see more details than I maybe saw while reading the book. I'm so happy I got to read this as it's been years since I've properly read a manga-style book. I would really recommend this to those who are fans of murder mysteries as this is a really good one. Although I know what happens ultimately, I find myself waiting in anticipation for volume 2!
Okay so I'm supposed to be on a Netgalley ban, but here we are. When I saw this, I immediately had to request it. A couple of months ago, I received the novel this graphic is based upon from Netgalley, and I absolutely loved it. Like top 10 books of 2021 kind of loved, so of course I had to ask for this. To my joy, I got accepted.
This story follows a group of university students who are all members of a murder mystery book club, they all have nicknames that correspond with famous mystery writers and they are on their way to a mystery that is a little closer to home. This group is a mixed bag definitely, and their dynamic is immediately set out as they reach the island. This is the manga adaptation of a best-selling, genre-defining novel that I've heard about for years but stupidly haven't read.
It's a murder mystery/detective fiction full of all the best elements of the classic genres told in bits and pieces that might just turn out to be a misdirection or might lead to an explosive revelation. Definitely left me craving for more and pondering the possibilities.
The art is pretty straightforward, with character designs distinctive enough to make identifying the characters on the page easy enough. The amount of detail put into backgrounds, especially nature, is impressive.
I can't wait to read more of this series. It got me salivating to know what happens next. I might even break down and read the novel first just because I really want to know what happens.

An ode to murder mystery lovers everywhere.
From start to finish this was infused with an overly-dramatic air of mystery which I absolutely loved. Everything from the characters naming each other after famous murder mystery writers to the constant detective speak was a stark reminder of a manga that revelled in a classic murder mystery.
The plot itself was sort of slow and didn’t go many places, but that was because it benefited more from its classic murder mystery analysis; the kind often skipped or rushed in a regular manga. It was fantastic to see crazy conclusions reached as they tried to solve an impossible mystery.
What I loved most of all was that this was simply the start. And as Ellery Queen (from which one of the characters takes his name) wisely said in The Siamese Twin Mystery, “The case, far from being solved, has just begun.”

Members of a university's Mystery Club visit a ten-sided home on a distant island which also happens to be the site of a ghastly, unsolved mass murder. They set out to investigate more, armed with details of the murder and keys to the property... but can they trust the "facts" of the case? And, more importantly, can they believe one another?
To me, this manga was Absolutely incredible. It keeps me on the edge of my seat with its intrigue. The illustrations were extremely well-done and detailed. I really like the characters and their traits.
Everything in this manga was indeed a chef kiss, and I wouldn't mind buying a physical copy of it later.

Summary:
Seven members of a university's mystery club go for a week-long vacation on Tsunojima Island where the owner of the island was brutally murdered alongside his wife and housekeepers. Soon, they find out that someone, maybe from their own group of friends, is intending to kill them. But who is that person, and for what reason?
Meanwhile, a former member of the mystery club, who did not join the vacation receives a letter blaming her for the death of a girl. She realizes that there are a lot of coincidences between the dead girl and the murder that happened on the island. With the help of some acquaintances, she is determined to find out who is behind the secret letters and the motive of that person.

I honestly love the art style! This manga has the art style that I really like and that is the first thing that hooked me on the story. Sometimes, I am a bit picky when it comes to reading a manga because the art style does not really suits my preference, but this one just clicked with me. At the first sight of the cover, I was already in love and I could not stop adoring the illustration. It really suits the mystery vibe and all the characters are beautifully drawn, with such details that are also mentioned in the book as an extra information. The panels are also neat and clean which make the experience of reading the story feels even better.
2. Mystery: 4/5⭐
As this is the first volume of the series, the mystery is still at the introduction part where the problem arises in the story. Questions are still vague and the characters are still trying to figure out what will happen during their vacation on the island. From this volume, we have a rough idea on where the story is heading, and the connection between these characters with the murdered family. I really like how this volume was ended because it has the suspense that will build your curiosity to continue reading, and to see whether the theories that you had in mind is correct or not in the next volume.
3. Characters: 5/5⭐
We have variation of characters in this story that can be found in most books with a group of friends. Each of them has their own personality that is shown to the reader. There are a narcissist, an introvert, a hot-headed guy and a cheerful one. This variety of characters is also important because we can see how each characters approach the problem, and what they are actually hiding among themselves. After all, everyone has their own secrets, so I would love to know more about these characters. Also, I love how all members of the mystery club inherited the name of the mystery writers such as Agatha Christie and Edgar Allen Poe. It reminds me of the manga, 'Bungo Stray Dogs' which makes me even more interested in this story.

I have not read the novel yet but so far, the story in this manga is progressing really good and everything is so smoothly narrated. I am a fan of mystery manga and I will gladly recommend this to my friends. This one is going into my wishlist for physical copy and I am looking forward to the next volume. Hopefully it will be as exciting and mysterious as this one!

6 months ago, a brutal mass murder took place on a remote island. The case remains unsolved.
Today, the members of a university’s Mystery Club set out on a week-long trip to stay in the abandoned island’s mysterious Decagon House. Their plan is to dig deeper into the case, the reality is something a bit more sinister...
I loved this manga! I recently finished watching the Sherlock TV show and was still very much in the puzzle solving mindspace, so this really was a case of fantastic timing.
I loved the characters! We have 10 recurring characters here that have a wide range of distinct, tropey personalities that were SO fun to read. Their interactions with each other were an absolute joy throughout. Despite the large cast, I was never confused of who was who and it was really easy to catch on to each of their quirks. I don’t think I could even pick a favourite, but it might be a battle between Ellery, Leroux, Agatha and Morisu.
The atmosphere on the island and in Decagon House was chilling and unsettling, and the art was fantastic, really expressive. I especially loved the architecture.
I really don’t have anything bad to say about this, other than being sad only one volume is out! I’ll definitely be picking up the novel this manga was based off of because after that cliffhanger ending, I’m dying to know what happens next.
If you love murder mysterys, a chilly atmosphere and a large cast of quirky characters, pick this up!

This first volume of The Decagon House Murders was already quite intriguing and filled with suspense. Although there are several characters, I felt each of them was given fair attention. While there were a couple individuals I enjoyed more than the others, I was able to connect on some level with all of them. There was also a lot of great dialogue between characters, establishing the nuances of various relationships within the Mystery Club.
The art and character design are gorgeous. I particularly enjoyed the eerie shading in some of the panels showing the island and the Decagon House. It’s probably too soon to tell, but this seems like a series where I’ll be slightly more invested in the characters (dangerously so as it appears one club member may already be dead by the end of the volume) than the actual murder mystery as I already love Ellery and Van far too much.

What a surprise read.
This probably the first thriller/ mystery story I ever read (I honestly think) and really enjoyed it.
I enjoyed how the mangaka presented the panels and the consistent vibe or feel throughout the story telling from it’s beginning towards the end.
Other than that, all the characters really were fishy, I definitely would love to know more about what’s going in their heads and also follow them throughout the very end.
There were a lots of theory going on and I’m hella curious which one would turn out actually. I also wasn’t expecting that cliffhanger but it was so good.
Overall, this was such a good good read.
