سمسارٌ شابٌّ، يُدْعى «ويلدون هينلي»، يقطنُ أحدَ أكثرِ الأجنحةِ ترَفًا بإحدى بناياتِ حيِّ «باك باي» بمدينةِ «بوسطن» الأمريكية. حقَّق «هينلي» نجاحًا باهرًا في بورصةِ الأوراقِ المالية، وبرعَ في هوايةِ التصويرِ الفوتوغرافيّ. كان قد طلب إزالةَ جميعِ أجهزةِ الإنارةِ الكهربائيةِ من الجناحِ الذي يسكنُه، وأُجِيبَ طلبُه لأنه كانَ قد استأجرَ المكانَ لفترةٍ طويلة؛ ومن ثَمَّ أصبحَ يستخدمُ الغازَ وحدَه لأغراضِ الإضاءة. في أحدِ الأيام، استيقظَ من نومِه في الرابعةِ صباحًا وقد شارَفَ على الاختناقِ بالغازِ الذي كان قد ملأَ الجناحَ بأكملِه، وتمكَّنَ من النجاةِ هذه المرة. لكنَّ الحادثَ قد تكرَّر، ومن جديدٍ كادَ «هينلي» يلقَى حتْفَه بسببِ انبعاثِ الغازِ في الجناح، ولم يُنقِذْه هذه المرةَ سوى أحدِ الخَدَم. مَن يا تُرَى يقفُ وراءَ هذهِ الحوادِث؟ ولماذا يحاوِلُ قتْلَه؟ وهل سينجحُ المحققُ العبقري الذي يُطلَقُ عليهِ لقبُ «آلة التفكير» في حلِّ اللُّغز؟ هذا ما سنَعرفُه من خلالِ مُطالَعتِنا لهذهِ القصةِ المُثيرة

About the author

Jacques Heath Futrelle (1875-1912) was an American journalist and mystery writer. He is best known for writing short detective stories featuring the "Thinking Machine", Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen. He worked for the Atlanta Journal, where he began their sports section; the New York Herald; the Boston Post; and the Boston American. In 1905, his Thinking Machine character first appeared in a serialized version of The Problem of Cell 13. In 1895, he married fellow writer Lily May Peel, with whom he had two children. While returning from Europe aboard the RMS Titanic, Futrelle, a first-cabin passenger, refused to board a lifeboat insisting his wife board instead. He perished in the Atlantic. His works include: The Chase of the Golden Plate (1906), The Simple Case of Susan (1908), The Thinking Machine on the Case (1908), The Diamond Master (1909), Elusive Isabel (1909), The High Hand (1911), My Lady's Garter (1912), Blind Man's Bluff (1914).

I do like this author's style, and I veloce I'll be reading not of the Thinking Machine. After reading this in glad I don't have gas lights.. .

" لا تقفز إلى النتائج " ، " الخيال نصف المنطق " ،
قصة بديعة سردها قريب من سرد المؤلف العبقري أرثر كونان دويل، سأقرأ المزيد من كتب المؤلف على الرغم من أن محاولتي الأولى لم تكن موفقة، لكن هذه القصة كانت كفيلة في تغيير حكمي السابق.

رواية مشوقة تبدو الشخصيات فيها أشبه بشارلوك هولمز وصديقه، تحكى عن جريمة قتل غامضة ولكن تنفك أجزاء اللغز واحد تلو الآخر لنصل فى النهاية الى القاتل الذى قتل بالخطأ وكان يقصد شخصا آخر.
