I finally have my hands on a physical copy of this book. As expected, Japanese books are pretty nice. I especially like the matte texture on the dustcover of this volume.
Originally, I read this story through a fan translation. I discovered that it was the kind of understatedly sexy mature story that will probably never get an official English translation. Hence, I found myself getting the completed series in its original Japanese text instead.
This still deserves an official English release, and I'll get those too, and double dip.
Here's the premise: a desperate man, eager to end it all, decides to rob a wealthy housewife for money to eat crab in Hokkaido before he ends it all. The twist: the woman decides to join him for crab.
What seemed at first to be a crime drama becomes a road trip to northern Japan. Both the male and female leads have some mysterious circumstances behind them. The woman is the eponymous snow woman (Yukionna) who shares both a name and demeanor akin to the legendary creature.
The first eight chapters collected in the first volume are not enough for the leader to discern the author's intentions. Yet, the reader is provided with enough incentive to stay on. The myterious backgrounds of both characters are slowly being unraveled and its intriguing. The art is also sublime; the female lead character design is both beautiful and mysterious. The travelogue gives a glimpse of Japan most foreigners will probably never be able to visit. The lure of unraveling the mystery is enough to give this, 4 stars.
I felt awful for the ML while reading this manga since he was suicidal as a result of a sexual assault case in which he was found not guilty and his family abandoned him. However, I felt it unusual and bizarre that he purposefully kidnapped a random wealthy woman (AKA THE FL) for a crab bite. Yes, she is cheating on her author husband, whom she does not love, according to what you read. This manga is supposed to be dark, but as I got halfway through the novel and they went on their "adventures," I didn't find the story to be very emotional. It's just them fooling about with one another. However, they were pretty quick at doing "it," so the plot strayed far from my expectations. They should have been given the opportunity to get to know each other well. It's a fun read, and the art is nice, but the plot lacked that emotional punch it badly needed.
Phoenix ++
[3.5/5] *Review is for whole series* This story was melancholic. I don't know to quite describe how I felt while reading this. It was sad and happy at the same time while also making me feel empty inside. This story is definitely not for everyone but if you decide to stick through it, I think you'll change your mind.
A roller coaster of emotions. The comedy is subtle but never too much, won't make you forget the theme of the story. The whole journey just makes me remember a thing I used to think about: "What is better, to die never know the happiness of love or experience for a brief moment then lose it forever?". A very poetic story.
