Salt & Light: Being The Hands & Feet of Christ

Rate this book
SALT & LIGHT is a combination of biblical scripture and personal experience that deals with the situations and encounters that are generally seen as not being congruent with the morality, spirituality or belief structures held by most people, civilian or sworn. In this book, Poole aims to expose the reader to some of the characteristics in the police culture that only exacerbates difficulties the Christian police officer must face in their work and service of God. Poole’s ambition for this book is a hope that in reviewing its chapters the reader will be provided with the tools through scripture to become a true servant, whether a believer in Christ or not. Salt & Light will give officers a path to fixing their Christian identities and utilizing their beliefs while in the performance of their duties. Throughout this book, Poole helps others to gain a simple understanding of the difficulties faced as public servants and the circumstances that clash with the Christian tenets they may hold. Exposing faults in policing, Salt offers a plan through scripture that will heal our nation and our identities as Christians. Poole’s personal stories about his battle with alcoholism and anxiety, give witness to God’s grace and amazing love in living testament. Evidence of God’s mercy is found throughout Salt’s chapters, and examples of how and why we share that mercy, are abundant.

In my opinion, there are very few Police Officers write a book nor do they share their life story for the world to read. So when I came across this book, it certainly piqued my interest. Officer Poole provides the reader with a glimpse into his childhood upbringing, which leads him to follow his heart and pursue his desired work in law enforcement. Officer Poole shares about the struggles of his life and how God has been instrumental in each and every step of his life through hardships, tumultuous situations and the challenges that have come across his path.

Office Poole learns to embrace the calling in his life to serve and rises up to take courage and do the job set before him (Ezra 10:4). For many are called and few are chosen (Matthew 22:14) and Officer Poole does more than just his job but chooses to live his life as a testimony for those who are struggling. God has not called you to "fit in" (1 Peter 2:9 and Officer Poole is certainly an example of one who is passionate about serving God to all those who come across his path.

Overall, this publication is a touching story of the journey of Officer Poole, who is living his life as one who is walking to fulfill God's purpose. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking meaning and purpose in life and all people who work as public servants.

I would have given this book a 5-star rating, but I found the format and layout of the pages to be a distraction. The font chosen is not industry standard and the jagged right column was not balanced with the left column. I noticed the author chose to start each chapter at the top of the page rather than follow the industry standard of mid-page. There is a biblical scripture verse at the beginning of each chapter.

Salt & Light, was like eating Soul food

Salt & Light, was like eating Soul food.  I felt replenished, I felt connected, I felt restored.
M.D Poole did an incredible job of tying scripture into his personal struggles as a "Peace Officer", as a father, husband, and recovering alcoholic.  M.D Poole writes with incredible power and clarity.  Although I am not a Police Officer I could relate to the heart of service that M.D Poole speaks to and the weariness that one feels when trying to do good in a world that seems so bad.
After reading about the demons M.D Poole has battled and the way he still goes out and works to sow love and peace into peoples lives, I feel inspired to do more of the same in my own life.
I can say that I feel closer to my creator and more at peace with the world having read "Salt & Light"  I found myself looking to it for solace after a long day and feeling connected to something greater than myself while reading.
I have found that peace in this life can be hard to come by, it seems fleeting and never quite in step with me.  However, reading the accounts of M.D Poole and how he practices incredible faith in the face of a crazy world brought a stillness to my soul that is hard to put words to.
I can not recommend this book more highly, whether you are a police officer or not, we can all learn how to be more loving, more civil, and be the "Salt and Light" of this earth.  I am so happy I was given the opportunity to read this book, but more importantly, I feel blessed to know the heart of the man that wrote it is out in his community serving with Love.
