Business Book Awards 2021 - HR & Management Category

The potential benefits of personalization on a workforce are huge. We curate music and online streaming content to suit our own tastes and we place more value on lottery numbers we have chosen ourselves, rather than a random selection from a lucky dip. When job roles are also personalized, employees are more interested, engaged and motivated at work.

The responsibility for enabling this personalization lies with HR and people professionals and a key approach to doing this is via job crafting. Personalization at Work is a practical guide explaining what job crafting is, why it's important, what the benefits are and more broadly how a personalized approach can be brought to all aspects of HR including recruitment, learning and development, performance management, diversity and inclusion and reward.

Full of practical advice and case studies from companies who have already seen the benefits of a personalized approach including Virgin Money, Widerøe airlines, Logitech, Google and Connect Health, Personalization at Work is essential reading for all HR professionals wanting to improve staff engagement, retention, productivity and the overall people experience. With expert guidance on how to encourage job crafting and a personalized approach to work for employees through everything from job titles, role descriptions and benefits packages through to working patterns, flexibility and work environment, this is a book that HR and people professionals can't afford to be without.

Personalization at Work is an amazing read for all, regardless of prior knowledge of the area or academic achievement. The book caters to all readers, allowing for those new to the area to develop a great understanding of the area with engaging and easy to read chapters; while also allowing those familiar with the area to develop a new insight, with the inclusion of some great job crafting literature. The book has a great layout, having a great flow which makes reading through the book start to finish much more enjoyable than other books of a similar nature. The layout also makes the book incredibly easy to navigate when looking for specific information, making the book something you'll always keep on hand for when needed.

Overall, Personalization at Work is an engaging and thoughtful read accessible to all, I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in the area.

Personalisation at Work is an informative, honest and thought-provoking review of how we can job craft on a day-to-day basis.

It gives practical suggestions on how to personalise roles and asks the rights questions to challenge standard procedures. The chapters are well laid out and the summary of key points helps to reinforce what has been discussed.

It’s honest, giving insights to potential problems from personalising roles and work environments. It’s meant to make you think rather than tell you what you should implement. A positive look at ways to increase job satisfaction and purpose. A good book for HR peeps.

Rob Baker not only gives a great overview on the topic of job crafting in an easily accessible way. He also develops the topic further by combining existing concepts and, in my view, bringing job crafting to a new level. Additionally the book is full of practical advise on how to approach job crafting in coaching and HR work. It is written in a clear and personal style.

Overall: A clear recommendation from my side. Grab the book and enjoy!
