Himari’s use of the word love is stuck back in her childhood, but Yori’s is firmly in the here and now. After their non-date date, Yori asked Himari to go out with her and made her intentions quite plain. She told Himari to think it over, but Himari has NEVER thought that way before. There’s a lot of soul searching on the way...

Whisper Me A Love Song hit all the right beats (it wasn’t any better if I said notes, trust me, I tried it both ways) in its first volume, setting up two different leads who were both easy to root for and a central premise about the word ‘love’ and what it means to people and how that meaning can change (shades of Bloom Into You!).

Things are certainly slower this volume, but to the credit of the writing, no less interesting. Himari and Yori are both refusing to stagnate and, while trying to figure themselves out, both are off trying new things (once they realize that they are trying these things for one another as much as themselves we’ll probably see some momentum here).

Yori figures out a way to try and reach Himari with her feelings that sees her back in orbit with the band from the first volume. Himari, left at slightly looser ends, tries to find a club that inadvertently ends up channeling her fondness for Yori.

There’s a strong jealous streak running through this one - Yori gets her first taste of it when Himari joins her club (knowing she’s being ridiculous doesn’t help her accept it any better, which many of us can sympathize with).

Himari does not get jealous, but somebody is certainly jealous of her, which leads to the emotional cliffhanger we close out on. This one is more interesting than it typically would be just because Himari hasn’t even figured herself out yet and the dilemma she’s presented with is pretty unfair to her.

If there’s a knock against this book, it’s probably how crazy accepting and, well, gay everybody is (the gay part is fine, but it’s prevalence is going to throw off statistical surveys in that area for years). This is definitely in the mould of many ‘yuri paradise’ style stories where men barely exist and the girls are all pairing off. I don’t think the one new character introduced in this volume is terribly interesting yet either.

Honestly though, the writing makes it very hard to care about the little problems. It’s not like it’s lacking for drama or strong storytelling. I also like how this book uses its bonus manga to presage story developments for the next volume (although, again, everybody also appears to know everybody else?).

4 stars. This volume is just as strong as the first. It’s definitely one of the best yuri titles that’s come out lately and just a wonderful romance in general. Super strong recommendation.

Well, that answered my question from volume one - Himari's simply grown up hearing declarations of love from her parents and, being somewhere on the demi-sexual spectrum, didn't think beyond that. I do feel safe saying she may be demi because of the way she reacts to Miki's questions about what she wants to do with her ostensible crush; it seems to be much more a case of needing to get to know her before she wants to take things farther. I hesitate to label her as "immature" or a "late bloomer" because both invalidate the asexual spectrum (of which demi is a part), and because quite frankly maturity has very little to do with it.

Anyway, none of it gives Aki any right to make the demand of Himari that she does in the end.

Sweet and very cute. I like how Himari and Yori talked things out and are trying to meet in the middle. Things are painful for both of them. Himari is hurting Yori by not being ready for love, and knows it, and cries because she can't resolve things yet. Yori is being a trooper and letting Himari figure things out at her own pace, and feels pangs of jealousy when Himari joins a club that has only one other girl in it. I'm getting some of the other characters confused, partly because we don't see them as much as the main couple, partly because none of them are characterized particularly strongly. "It's a romance, so everybody's crushing on each other" is all I really need to remember. :D

I'm raising an eyebrow about this being rated for older teens. There's been no content so far that I would consider inappropriate for a reader who's in junior high.

A second volume even better than the first one

Key words: romance, manga, lgbt, music, contemporary fiction

Even better than the first one. I loved it so much. Now that we know the characters and that the romance has started, it is much easier to appreciate Yori’s effort to make Kino fall in love with her. Yori opens herself up a little bit in this volume and I appreciate it a lot. I think she is my favourite character, though of course I love Kino too. I absolutely recommend this series.

2020 Read #732

This isn’t as cute as volume one, but there are sparks and glimmers that this series has the potential to be just as good as Bloom Into You (one of the best yuri manga out there).

Cute, again!

Not that much of a fan of love-rivals, but I feel like this will be more or less the only way for Himari to realize her feelings. Although, then again, you can also be jealous over your platonic friends.
Somehow the only way to distinguish between romantic and platonic feelings, is kissing or more than that. And if you're ace, it'll be almost impossible to tell the difference. Props to all aces if you've figured it out. :0
I really felt Mari's insecurity and confusion about what love really is and how you know whether you love-love someone.

It's nice to have cooking club representations, as those are very rare in anime/manga, for some reason.
Sad to see Yori being so jealous, when Mari is learning to cook and bake, just so she can give her Senpai some goods. Although it's very understandable, since Mari gets close with literally everyone really quick. But at least Yori's "rival" knows about them and won't do anything.
Also, again, amazing how normal everything is kept and no one freaks out when you mention the gender of your crush.

ABSOLUTLY INCEDIBLE COME BACK FROM THE FIRST VOLUME

the interactions are way more personal and personally moving, finally getting into the mind of himaki, is trying to figure out her feelings (and i love the message)

it's the perfect amount of cute, reflective and realistic for a shojo, and the way the two love interests are still exploring their lives and growing side by side is just ADORABLE

poor aki though.. she is such a great character and is doing her absolute best for her friend, if yori won't want her, i will 🙏

himari tells yori she doesn't know romantic love so she wants time to figure that out, meanwhile they can spend time together. himari joins a cooking club and yori is jealous of the other girl in the club. the volume ends with aki asking if himari would mind if she stole yori from her
