Part of my JLPT N3 reading challenge 2024 - book 18
I'm quite proud to have finished this one. It has been the hardest of the books Ive read this year and its taken me the longest to finish; having started and finished several others as I slowly read this as well.
Why? Mainly because of the dialect, it is in Hiroshima dialect which meant, in addition to the usual dictionary translations of vocabulary, I often had to run sentences theough ChatGPT to parse the dialect into regular Japanese. Though I did pick up some of the more common expressions.
The era it is set in also meant that there were time specific concepts and phrases, in particular as the war becomes a part of the book terms like 'air raid shelter' which are very speciifc to this setying start to appear.
Which brings me to the next point, I didnt actually know what the book was about when I started it - I'm reading anything that I can that seems an appropriate level - so it was only slowly that it was going to deal with the war and the bomb in Hiroshima dawned on me.
It is written with a lot of humour and compssion, I believe aimed at younger readers, but it does still have some emotionally tough parts to read.
It does feel like an achievement to have read this in Japanese and think I will continue into next year with my 'only reading books in Japanese' experiment. It has been quite rewarding this year.
