Dubbed, the Millennial Love Expert, Samantha Burns, has written an excellent dating "self-help" book that will help readers find their perfect match and get out of the dating rut they've been in. Geared towards women, this book is filled with practical advice, proven strategies, and concrete steps that will empower women to take charge of their personal lives and their dating lives. Well written, humorous, and honest; this no-nonsense guide isn't too overwhelming big or filled with dense outdated ideas. If this book doesn't motivate you to find and cultivate romantic connections then I don't know what will!

Book Review: “Done With Dating” by Samantha Burns MA, LMHC.

I have had this book on my bookshelf for about a year now and I was browsing my shelf’s trying to find a quick and easy book to get me out of my reading slump, and this one did its job. It’s 150 pages of advice regarding beginning, continuing, and ending relationships, as well as, personal hilarious examples from the author and her patients.

Considering I have mostly* given up on finding men to “date” via social media and dating apps, this book was nice because it gave a TON of info on where to potentially meet people, how to go about interacting with someone, how to exude confidence, how to be less anxious, and how to comfortably go on dates.

Some of my favorite quotes were:
1. “If no one has given you a reason to think you’re incredible, it’s pretty hard to believe you are. I’m here to tell you that a fulfilling, honest, and magnificent love is out there for you, even if life has taught you otherwise”.
2. “Choose to show up confident in yourself as you are today, even if the circumstances of your life aren’t exactly what you want them to be. When you allow your date to see you as you, rather than the perfect version you would like to present, you can create the authentic connection and relationship you’ve always desired since you aren’t pretending to be anything else”.

Overall, I’d recommend this book to any singles out there who feel pretty hopeless when it comes to potentially finding a partner. As an almost 27 year old female who has never been in a serious relationship, I can tell you that it is incredibly frustrating feeling “left out” of the dating world. This book helps you feel a little more capable of getting what you want when that special person comes along.

Altogether was a solid book, though most of it wasn't particularly revolutionary. It had some good advice, but wasn't as cutting-edge as I hoped it would be.

It had some outdated and sexist language such as the use of "RBF" and referencing men "liking to hunt" in relationships. The author does point out she has tried other methods for dating, but letting men hunt "is what works best." Look, i hear you, but of course it works. Of course letting men act like predatory apes and fixing an RBF like a 1950s housewife will get you some dates. For someone like me though, I would be far more interested in WHO I am dating, not just getting crappy man-babies into my sphere for the heck of it. I realize that these methods work for a lot of people but as an adamant feminist and someone who DOES have more options outside of the heteronormative binary (I'm panromantic), I would never be happy with the type of person I would attract if I followed this book's advice.

Just take it all with a small grain of salt-- there is some wisdom in here and can supplement any other dating books you are reading. Think about the type of person you want to attract... if you want the best of the best... as in a feminist, self-actualized, non-predatory male partner, then don't lower your standards to suit the advice in this book. I don't care what gets me "more" dates. If a man is hunting or acting animalistic, I'm done.

Loved this book! It was incredibly insightful, and gives you hope when you feel like you want to give up on dating and the single life. I would highly recommend for any body feeling “stuck” in today’s dating world and just wanting to find their someone.

1/24/2023 - Ok, it’s a not fantastic self-help book i already read 3 years ago, but hey, it’s a book — still counts on the year-end books read tally. Revisited it because, well, dating.

3/14/2020 - A helpful resource.
