Reveals how the iconic warrior attained his legendary speed, power, and footwork. Included are practical, effective stretches for increasing flexibility, abdominal exercises that can be performed anywhere, and hard-hitting advice on running, biking, skipping rope, and shadowboxing. More than just a fitness guide, this must-have manual also delves into the fundamental aspects of Bruce Lee’s revolutionary combat philosophy, jeet kune do, including how to strengthen your fists with iron-palm training, get the most out of your punches and kicks, camouflage your attacks, develop the footwork to evade almost any blow, cover distance rapidly, escape from a tight corner, conserve energy for countering, build muscles without sacrificing speed, fix flaws in your stance, and improve your peripheral vision, leverage, and timing.
Bruce Lee was an American-born martial artist, philosopher, instructor, martial arts actor and the founder of the Jeet Kune Do martial arts system, widely regarded as the most influential martial artist of the 20th century and a cultural icon. He was the father of actor Brandon Lee and of actress Shannon Lee.
Bruce Lee was such an amazing martial artist. This series of books really helps expand your mind and help you become a better martial artist yourself. Even more than 3 decades later these books are still very relevant.
The other books in the series are for the serious martial arts practitioner, or for the fan wanting to dive deep into Bruce’s training modalities (Jeet Kune Do). Much of those teachings would be considered scripted in the current age of MMA combat sports. However, this volume is a damn good book on training for speed, power, cardio, stamina, endurance, balance and mobility; showing the exact tools Lee used and how – and using his signature hybrid/holistic approach brought in from different disciplines such as boxing, fencing, etc.
Unfortunately this series was released years after Bruce’s death, so he didn’t get to see them come to life in print (a close friend of his edited and published the content). The fact these books were planned while he was alive, shows the level of passion and care the man had to share his knowledge and to teach it practically to the masses (no theory here). His openness to teaching got him into a lot of hot water with the traditional Chinese martial arts community, who scorned his teaching of the “sacred” arts to “non-Asian westerners.” He was a contrarian and a rebel. Way ahead of his time, bridging the gap between the East and the West.
He may not have been a PhD, but what he lacked in formal credentials he made up for in practical RESULTS (and by reading TONS of books - over 2,000 in his personal library). Practical to the core.
The relentless kung fu master personally espoused his traditional fighting methodology in an expansive collection of combat instruction. Security officers often read this guide as a default because it entertainingly combines advanced combat training with ponderous ideations directly from the legendary popular culture icon. This book is not reserved for martial arts enthusiasts; instead, it has achieved cult popularity among security professionals.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard.
Jeet Kune Do favors formlessness so that it can assume all forms and since Jeet Kune Do has no style, it can fit in with all styles. As a result, Jeet Kune Do utilizes all ways and is bound by none and, likewise, uses any techniques which serve its end.
My style? You can call it the art of fighting without fighting. A good martial artist does not become tense, but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Ready for whatever may come. When the opponent expands, I contract; and when he contracts, I expand. And when there is an opportunity, "I" do not hit, "it" hits all by itself.
Bruce Lee's personal training method, the way to slowly limbering your limbs in order to not sustain injury for advanced moves. The book expresses the how to guide of Jeet Kune Do complete with images and arm as well as hip movement. However, the most important part of a punch is the leg work. Master the leg and you can avoid any hit coming your way.
Finished in teens. An unforgettable pictorial analysis of JKD which predicted mma by decades. And written by a true talent, a cross-cultural icon of the philosophy of martial arts.
I have read the whole serious of Bruce Lee's Fighting Method and I think it is extremely helpful to develop speed and proper training method. Bruce Lee's advice and techniques have definitely helped me in my training and I feel that I have become a bit smarter as a fighter and more intelligent in my training. I definitely recommend this book and the other three to anyone who is interested in developing a proper training style.
What distinguished Bruce Lee was his work ethic, and this book illustrates some of his training methods. Out of the entire series, this one has the most general and therefore practical information for those of any style.
This is a very useful and practical book. It gives detail instruction that explain some of the foundational elements of JKD. Valuable to any martial arts student. Quickly read, wonderfully illustrated, and thoroughly explained.
Though these books have a few interesting and useful techniques, most are covered in volume I. The rest tend to quickly grow either repetitive, extremely specialized, or a combination of the two.
