The Girl.

The Reader.

A story of hope in the midst of despair.
Thoughts of suicide in the midst of life.
A story of reality in the midst of fiction.

For fourteen years, The Girl has been shuffled from one foster home to another, hoping for a forever family that never happens. But her newest home has something none of the others have had: a friend, an older man she calls The Gardener, with whom she occasionally sneaks out for some late-night snacks and other harmless escapades. Their latest excursion, however, delivers much more than a white chocolate mocha and an order of chili cheese fries; what they discover at the house of a recently deceased neighbor sends the duo on a life-changing journey.

Hello! No formal biography in the third-person here. It’s just me, Dan, lover of books, science fiction, peanut butter, and animals – especially dogs. Moose, the cute one in the picture, prefers to take the easy way out when it comes to hiking. He’s just one of the many pets we have. Seriously, you name it, and we’ve probably got it – or at least had it at one time or another. Except snakes, which totally freak me out. Show me a snake; I run. End of story.

Thanks for stopping by. If you enjoy one of my books, please feel free to share! Have a great day … Dan

I liked this book, I just didn't like aspects of this book.

I didn't see the need for the story within the story; it was tangentially connected and I could see the connection being completed post-reading, but it didn't really connect during the reading so to me, there was no reason for it. The primary purpose that I could see that the story within the story served was dealt with in a different way, over the last few pages, so again, the Reader part belonged, just not her "story." I understand her "story" ultimately helped her, and in that way it could help others, but I think this revelation could have been alluded to throughout without having to actually read the secondary story. This may seem confusing, but in order to not give anything away, it's the best I can do. And, I didn't like the chop-chop baby; that got old the first time I read it!

I did like the primary characters and some of the secondary characters, and the plot moved along at a nice clip. It's a good, quick read, and I think it'd be well served as a YA book more so than an adult read. I believe that it could reach youth who need to be reached in a way that simply talking can't. Were I still a teacher in the high school classroom, this book would definitely be on my shelf for that reason alone!

Beautiful Book!

I don't know of any book I have ever read that made me cry so much! But it was such a beautiful story with very memorable characters. An amazing author to be sure!

Interesting

I had mixed feelings about the storyline of this book, the emotions and feelings it conjured were deep and raw and very very sad.

I did like this

I enjoyed this rather dark story line (but light read.) Hard to describe except in my head! Subject matter is dark much of the time but easily read in syntax. I’m not sure how much thought will go into it since it’s pretty plain what is intended. At least that’s my take. My review has puzzles I know, but when you’ve read the book they will be pretty clear. And I did enjoy reading.

I found it somewhat confusing to read this book. A writer a Librarian and then 2 different sets of people. Dolly was excellent. A young girl who has lost her family and is shuffled around to different homes finally lands in a home at the age of 14 where she encounter Mr G. He is an older gentlemen who takes her under his wing. Dolly frequently talks to a Robin she see from her bedroom window. She has a chair where she reads and can see the bird and try to figure out her life.

I got a third of the way through this book and just got bored. Nothing was really happening, and the conversations were unrealistic and seemed meaningless. I couldn't see any point to anything that was happening.

Don't know what to think of this book. The story within the story (the Reader's story) was confusing and terribly written. The main story was very sad, touching and captivating.

Confused it what I felt when I read this book and hoped it would finish where I would feel okay about the story and all. But i still have gaps where I'm not certain about what happened.

Interesting and improbable but entertaining. No violence or sex. I liked it.

There was just enough confusion about the story within the story to keep me from giving this a 5-star rating. I loved the main character and her interactions with all the other characters. I would recommend this book to all audiences. Bring your tissues...
