Teen monster slayer Aurelia “the Firedragon” Sun has been training since she could walk to do one thing: gank supernaturals. Almost a hundred years ago, the Lord of the Underworld unleashed countless beasts upon the earth, and it’s up to fighters like her to defend what’s left of humanity. But under the Triumvirate—a totalitarian regime built from the ashes of the United States—she’ll always be considered a second-class citizen for being born without magic, no matter how great her combat skills. Meanwhile, a secret rebellion is brewing, one whose beliefs in freedom and equality mirror her own.A Girl Called Firedragon is an illustrated collection of short works that follow Aurelia’s journey from government-trained cadet to underground revolutionary. Stories included are:The FiredragonFiredragon RisingThe Firedragon’s HuntThe Firedragon StrikesThis compendium follows Aurelia’s standalone adventures prior to the events of Flynn Nightsider and the Edge of Evil, the first novel in the Flynn Nightsider series.

The main character Aurelia is a young girl who grew up being trained to fight monsters. She earned the nickname Firedragon for her skills at a very young age. This book contains four stories, starting with a turnament and ending with her first mission with the rebellion.
Being a Norm, all she wants to do is prove she is as good as any enchanter. She is tired of them looking down their noses at her just because she doesn't have magic. She is 14 at the start of this book and the youngest contestant in the tournament. This book show how nieve she is about the world and the path she take that helps her to start to grow up.
The second story in this book she finds out the truth about her mother's death, and she can no longer continue training to kill monsters for the current government. This story shows her journey out of the only place she has ever lived so the she may join the rebellion. Her escape is not a smooth one.
The third story she is desperate to go on her first mission but is frustrated that she is only being allowed to patrol the perimeter of the rebellions hideout. With an unknown monster just outside the perimeter she decides to try to kill it to prove herself. She finds that she may be in over her head.
The fourth story she is on her first mission and nothing is as it seems. The rebellion is trying to find out more about a powerful weapon the government is developing. This mission leads them to a small town that a lot of monsters suddenly start attacking. Most of the monsters that are attacking never team up with other monsters. This starts a hunt for the source that is pulling all these monster together.
This is an interesting journey and I found the small twists to be enjoyable. These 4 stories take place over just a couple of months so the main character is showing she can grow up quickly even though by the end she is only 15 years old.
This book has it all—monsters and heroes, good vs evil, oppressive intolerance and revolutionaries seeking change. If you are a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show, the movie was crap), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Harry Potter, and/or Avatar the Last Airbender, then you will absolutely LOVE this book!
