Special Forces Sergeant Dax Holloway crawled out of the Taliban's clutches barely alive. His captors took more than his sight. They took his humanity.

Six years later, he’s carved out an existence back in Boston. One dependent on routines. On walking the same path. Day after day. Through darkness and pain. Always alone.

Second Sight is his only refuge. The most elite investigative firm in the country—built from the rubble of his former life—gives him purpose in a world he can no longer see.

Evianna Archer’s life makes sense. A brilliant coder, she’s poised to be the next darling of the tech world—heading up a project that will redefine home security. Until one moment changes everything.

Her life in chaos, she turns to Dax for protection. He's everything she shouldn’t want, shouldn’t need, shouldn’t trust. But she’s drawn to him.

When they uncover a shocking secret, Dax must make a choice. Stay broken? Or risk his heart—and his life—for the woman who chases all his dark shadows away?

Second Sight is a slow burn military romantic thriller. All books in the Away From Keyboard Series are standalone romances featuring a different couple, but past couples and characters play active roles in future books.

Second Sight is book four in the Away From Keyboard series by Patricia D. Eddy. This is a stand alone romantic suspense. The characters from the previous book do play a role in this book but you do not need to have read it.

sexy blind man with a cane

We met Dax Holloway in the previous book, On His Six. He is Wren’s boss and owner of Second Sight, an elite investigative services organization in Boston. Dax was held prisoner along with Ryker six years ago and now he is blind as a result of the torture he endured. He has learned to be fairly independent with the help of his elite military training. But his world is a lonely existence still filled with nightmares of what he and Ryker endured.

computer code

Evianna Archer is CIO for Beacon Hill Technologies. For years she, along with her boss, have been working on Alfie, a home automation and security device. It’s almost ready for the big reveal and everyone is working non-stop to get the last few bugs out of the code. One of their employees has breached his contract and has to be let go. Only he doesn’t take it well and Evianna feels as though she might need protection. Someone recommends Second Sight so she goes to them for help.

Evianna’s situation escalates quickly and she and Dax find themselves thrown together as he is short staffed and she needs protection. The chemistry between them is strong from the start and Dax feels the need to make sure she is safe at all costs.

“Kissing her…it’s like coming home. To a home I never knew I wanted or needed.”

description

Dax hasn’t been with anyone in six years. No one has seen his scars, has seen what he has become. But Evianna sees the man that he is, she sees beauty, she sees a man she could easily fall for. If only she can stay alive long enough to find out.

Dax and Evianna can’t ignore what is happening between them. At the same time, they are in constant danger as they try to figure out what is going on.

“With you, I’m not the man I was, but the man I think I’m supposed to be.”

hands touching

This book, just wow! I loved getting a little bit of Wren and Ryker and seeing how happy they are. And I loved watching Dax and Ryker rebuild their friendship. But most of all, I loved Dax and Evianna together. I loved how Evianna was with Dax, how she so quickly learned to be a part of his life. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, especially the last 25%. I stayed up way too late last night finishing this because there was no way I could put it down.

If you enjoy steamy, sexy, romantic suspense with strong characters and heroes that are all alpha and possessive, this is for you. There is one more HUGE thing that made this book a hit for me. Dax’s favorite endearment was “darlin!” That is my favorite word of all time and every time he said it, I sighed. Thanks, Patricia, for another intensely wonderful read. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

“You’re mine, Evianna. And I protect what’s mine. No matter the cost.”

I have started and stopped writing this review at least four times in the last 48 hours. It isn't because I had a problem, or didn't like the book, it was because I didn't know what to say, and when I figured out what to say, I wasn't sure how to say it. I was one of the lucky people who were able to read an ARC of this book.

Second Sight was far more than I expected, and delivered, by far, more emotion than I could handle. This is the first of Patricia Eddy's books to make me cry. I don't mean get teary eyed, I mean the "I have to stop reading and find a tissue" sort of stuff that never happens to me. It seems to be my month for reading tear-jerkers disguised as very well written romance novels. And I didn't even tear up in the places everyone would guess that I did. But I'll talk about that shortly.

When I picked up Second Sight, I expected to read about Dax, only the second of two people to ever survive Hell, a series of underground caves in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan. I knew, from the previous book, On His Six (which featured a character I'm still in love with, Ryker), that Dax had been blinded after Ryker escaped. He was eventually rescued and returned to his hometown of Boston. I knew he ran a private investigation service (and I know that calling it that is the understatement of the year, but I don't want to put spoilers here, so I'm forced into it). That's all readers of this book knew going into it. He and Ryker had been close, and now were struggling because of the scars, both physical and mental, from their time in Hell.

What I didn't expect this book to do was pull the rug out from under me, and make me realize that calling this a romance is a bit of an overstatement. Yes, there's romance here, but I truly do not believe that is the story Patricia Eddy wrote. The romance between Evianna and Dax is secondary to the real meat of the story - the convergence of Ryker and Dax. When I say convergence, I mean two very powerful characters, each with their own depth, coming together with a lot of force. It wasn't explosive, but it WAS incredibly intoxicating to read their exchanges. I hung on each of their words and wondered how the author had created this, since all of their conversations are on the phone. There is not one physical meeting of the two in this book, yet when I finished, their encounters were what I remembered of the book. So I did what anyone would do, I read it again, all the way through.

The second read-through didn't change a thing for me. If you are looking for emotion, look no further. This book is about the emotion borne between two men who experienced ruthless, unending torture; who kept themselves sane by tapping messages to each other in code that they had to change every week or so; who carried the emotional scars with them like shields, held up to protect them from ever having to feel again; and most of all the emotion of two men who survived anything but didn't know how to put their friendship back together. That's what you'll get when you read this book. And then, once they finally accept that their friendship survived Hell, you will be able to see into the love affair between Evianna and Dax, and understand why he thinks she was made for him.

As always, Ms. Eddy puts all the parts of a novel together effortlessly. I am a technical reader - I want to know that the author is controlling the plot, pace, characters, arc of the story, all the way through. She does this in every book I've read. But this book was different. This book may lose readers along the way because it is a slow boil. Anyone looking for explosive and hot steamy scenes between Evianna and Dax will have to wait through half of the book at least. And anyone looking for the bad guys to physically attack will be waiting a while also. What you won't be waiting for is a dramatic book that builds from the first page until the last. I usually am satisfied with an HEA, but in this case, I'm not. I wanted this book to go on, to tell more of the story that I know is there. That means that Ms. Eddy needs to get herself in gear and start writing the next story in the Away From The Keyboard series. I'll be waiting.

It’s rare that I have the opportunity to read books in a series back to back, and it offers an entirely different reading experience. I binged on this series in preparation of Dax's story being released, and I love all of these special forces guys, but gah! Dax is everything! He lived through fifteen months of unspeakable torture at the hands of the Taliban, and after six years, he’s managed to create a life for himself and find his footing in his now-sightless world, but he’s simply existing. That is until Evianna walks through the door and brings color, vibrancy and light into his darkness.

Although a work of fiction, I’m always drawn to military romance. When done well, they remind us of the sacrifices men and women have made for our country and the challenges they face in returning to civilian life. And Eddy does it exceptionally well. Reading this book serves to remind me to more fully appreciate the freedom I enjoy, won at the hands of selfless members of the military to whom I owe a debt that can never be repaid. That makes this book meaningful, but Eddy's talent in creating a captivating, evocative story makes it special.

Dax and Evianna's story is a direct hit to the heart; evocative and compelling with enough danger and suspense to keep things interesting. I loved both of these characters, but especially Dax. There’s just something about a strong, tough hero with a vulnerable side, and Evianna was the perfect heroine for him, easily seeing beyond his scarred exterior to the amazing man inside. I loved every minute of their touching, heart wrenching, exciting story and wholeheartedly recommend it!

This is pure perfection. I loved everything about this book. Ms Eddy has a way with word and spins a story that's soul deep and utterly captivating. Dax is so real, intense, seductive, gut wrenching and sexy as heck. He jumps right off the page and makes you feel all he feels and then some. I read this book in one sitting and I'm getting ready to dive in again.

Wow, what an amazing yet gut wrenching storyline. This was my first book from this author, and I found it to be action packed, thrilling and I couldn't put it down. Not sure if there are going to be more books surrounding some of the other characters in this story, but I would definitely read if there are. I would recommend this to anyone that loves books with military in them.

Dax is former Special Forces. After being rescued from being held captive and tortured, he returns to the world, scarred, blind and emotionally ruined. Second Sight, the most elite PI firm in the country is his baby. Built with the expertise of not only himself, but others who have the type of training he has had, and more; it gives his life a purpose and meaning in a world that he can no longer see. Evianna Archer walks into his life, needing help with a stalker. A former employee who didn't take being fired to well and has begun to step up his game. Now, Dax with the help of his team begin the job of protecting the beauty and when for different reasons, he becomes short staffed, he takes up the task of protecting her himself. After one attack on Evianna, things begin to change for the man who has not let anyone come close to him, physically or emotionally. She slowly begins to break down the walls he has erected around himself and manages to make her way into his hardened heart. Now, he just needs to keep her alive!

This was a fantastic read, filled with outstandingly written characters and supporting characters. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. You will definitely find yourself engrossed in this book right from the beginning.

This book was amazing and I could not get enough. I loved Dax and his strength to keep going when life dealt him a crap load. He never let them steal his joy or his happiness and he went on to create a company called Second Sight and that is his baby. He does the same routine everyday and he makes sure to never veer from it till one day he has to.

Evianna has a great life. She is heading up a secret project that will redefine home security. She is on top on the world till one day her life is threatened and she has no where to turn but to Dax for help. Dax agrees to help her and find out what is going on but in the process of helping her he is starting to have feelings for her and that could put them both in harms way.

When they uncover a shocking secret their lives will be forever changed because now they are being hunted down and are in some serious crap. To make matters worse Dax will have to make a choice, he will either stay with Evianna and help her or walk away and save himself as well as his family and friends? This is a must read thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat reading till the end to see what happens to Dax and Evianna.

So much more than meets the eye

Dax's story is so heartfelt, so packed with emotions it's impossible not to fall in love.
The plot is dense, thrilling and keeps you glued till the end. Patricia's writing style is so fluid, honest and direct, there is no beating around, she goes to the point and scores every time. There are several memorable moments in this book and I do not want to spoil them by giving details. Just rest assured you will be pleasantly surprised with the level of connection that is possible to develop with these amazing characters. And this brings a flow of different emotions throughout the book. Definitely a story that stays with you long after you finish reading. And once I finished, I simply started over and I am sure I will read it again and again and again.
Can't wait for the next book to meet new characters and revisit the much loved ones.

What an absolutely fantastic book! It was gripping from the beginning to the end. My emotions were raw. This book had everything suspense, intrigue, espionage, and one heck of a love story. The relationship between Evianne and Dax was so genuine and uplighting. He didn't think he deserved Evianne, but she shiqed he was more than his disability. The author brought so much insight into Dax's way of life I was able to appreciate what he lives with on a daily basis.

Whoa I seriously finished this in less than a day. I started it and felt so bad for Dax but then I thought about all he overcame, I felt proud of him. My heart still hurt for all he had endured but he takes control and tries to make it ok. Evianna is a coder and trying to launch a new system that will help thousands of people but she becomes a victim of a stalker/murderer so she seeks the help of Second Sight, Dax’s PI firm, to help protect her. They help her and try hard to protect her and slowly her and Dax come to need and love each other. This is a beautiful story of how a beautiful soul can help a damaged one by being nice, helpful, and loving.

If you are looking for a book that sucks you in from the opening pages and locks you down to the very last page - look no further. Once again Patricia D. Eddy creates a world filled with intrigue, emotion and angst. Broken characters that can only be put back together again with love and understanding is a small glimpse of the entire Away from the keyboard series. Dax and Evianna are perfect for each other and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us.

4.5/5⭐

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Second Sight is the next standalone in Patricia D. Eddy's Away From Keyboard series. A high adrenaline, emotion packed ride you don't want to miss!

Dax survived being a prisoner of war and came out of it blind and with a lot of scars both on the surface and inside. Evianna is leading a major tech project and has spent her life proving herself as a woman in her field. After she has to let one of her employee's go she finds herself in needs of protection and turns to Dax's business Second Sight for help. Evianna's situation and escalates and finds herself under Dax's watch. Dax already has the odds stacked against himself with his inability to see but throw his instant connection with Evianna into the mix, and he's job gets even harder. She quickly becomes more than just a client and helps him heal old wounds. But when Evianna's life is at risk will what he sees as his weakness' stop him from saving her.

From the first page this book grabs your attention and doesn't let you go. The story line is interesting and fast paced. I loved Dax so much, he was beautifully broken and my heart hurt for him. He was constantly internally struggling but on the outside remained strong and in control. He may have been blind but he was still leathal and could kick a**.  Evianna was a sweetheart who complicated his characters perfectly. She didn't put up with his attitude, quickly adapted to his ways and showed him that he was so much more than his scars. Evianna quickly broke down his walls in their connection was beautiful. The sex scenes in the novel were steamy and passionate and not over done.

Second Sight by Patricia D. Eddy and the previous books in the Away From The Keyboard series, are perfect for fans of suspense romance readers! I can't wait for more releases in this intense series.

"I need him. All of him. He's the only guide I have through the chaos, and now ... after tonight... he's the only one I want."

"She's beautiful. Strong. Capable. Brave. And she loves me. Blind, scarred, with nightmares, anger issues, and a complete inability to ask for help when I need it."

This book is a masterful exploration of life without sight, gut-wrenching despair and hopelessness, and healing. Dax is broken in body; his captors in Hell avenged Ryker’s escape by blinding Dax and continuing their physical torment. His flashbacks and the way the story is told makes it so immediate for the reader that you feel wrung out by the end, affected in ways you might not have expected from a novel. Patricia D. Eddy is a magical storyteller; while you read her words, you are in the world she’s created, tripping over the bag left on the floor, listening for clues. In fact, there are parts of the book where I felt blind; although I was reading the words, I was with Dax; my world was black and I felt his initial panic. There is romance and love too, crafted into the story with Evianna a perfect match for Dax, with her empathy and courage - and intelligence.

There are some resolutions to previous situations in this book, but they won’t detract from its strength if you haven’t read the earlier Away From Keyboard books. For those that have read them, Wren features here with her delightfully quirky curse terms. I still feel raw from the effect of this book; I cannot recommend it enough.

This story was rough on me in parts, the pain and suffering that Dax went through is gut wrenching. Watching this amazing strong man in his struggle to just be, well it was perfect. The way this story is told, the history it shares, the damage done to Dax, all built a foundation for an amazingly addictive love story.
Evianna, probably spelled wrong, sorry!! She Sees Dax, not his wounds, his disability, she sees the man inside.
Can they both be strong enough to overcome his past, his fears and let's not to forget the trouble stalking her!
The build up in this was amazing, and I was a newbie to this world, had zero problems following along.......matter of fact it made me go get the others and binge read them too........she's gotten me hooked on these stories. Be happily stalking Amazon now to see if there's more coming......it will be a one click purchase, guaranteed.

Ok, cards on the table, I'm not ashamed to admit that this book made me cry. There I've said it. I don't know what it is about Patricia's writing but it just seems to get inside me and grab hold of me and wring all the emotion out of me. I just loved this book, it sucked me in from the start and didn't let go. I know that it will take some time for these characters to leave me. This series just gets better with each book. I love the characters, so broken and so beautifully written. I want to get to know them further. I'm already looking forward to the next book. Can I give it more than 5 stars?

Very grumpy H - he's blind, been horribly tortured and runs his own security company. The h is an amazing coder, super smart and perhaps the dumbest heroine ever as the bad guy was obvious from the 1st time on page. Oh well, it's full on action, the H is grumpy even through he has lots of steamy scenes and a great HEA. It's good but just a little OTT for me.

Dax, owner of the private investigative firm, Second Sight, from the previous book, was blinded during his time as a POW. His firm is hired by Evianna when one of her fired employees is stalking her and may jeopardize the launch of a new computer program from the company she works for. Turns out it is much more complicated than that both in terms of the case and in their budding relationship. Again, the TSTL moments, mostly by Evianna, were annoying. It didn't distract from the plot as much as the previous books, but I found the bad guys and their plot more ridiculously over the top than previous books. I love Eddy's characters, who despite their limitations have made good lives for themselves, yet I'm over the instant love. Just 25 to 50 more pages of relationship development would greatly balance the books in this series and help my buy in to the couples. A+ on writing military and realistic damaged characters, this one missed the romantic mark for me.

This is the fourth book in the Away From Keyboard Series. I love this Series so much! Dax and Evianna's story is breathtaking, suspenseful and wonderful. They are both beautiful and strong characters, and they share an undeniable chemistry. I loved to see again Ryker and Wren. Ryker and Dax's story is totally heartbreaking, and we learn more about their past. The brotherhood between them is strong and exceptional. The Epilogue is so heartwarming and beautiful. Aiden Snow and Grace Grant did an outstanding job with the narration. I truly enjoyed listening this story and I highly recommend it. (updated with audiobook review!)

This is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. The previous book about Ryker/Wren ties closely to this one and the characters are involved, but the author smoothly added enough background I never felt I was missing details. I liked Wren so much I'm interested in reading her book. It also incorporates a little for the next book - enough of a teaser to keep you invested in their world.

I really liked the suspense and storyline for Dax and Evianna's book. It was unique and kept me guessing. As you go along, you suspect the bad guy, but it was an enjoyable ride to get there. Wren's involvement and skills were great, plus she's an incredibly likable character to balance the more intense and serious Dax and Evianna.

I didn't love Dax and I'm on the fence about Evianna. Consequently, their romance didn't fully click. He was incredibly combative with her so their development felt abrupt. He continued to be an ass to people and that left me feeling like his character didn't grow enough from that angle. His background is heartbreaking and I was impressed by how the author smartly integrated the day to day life for someone who is blind.

The name and wording of the series are odd to me and I was hesitant and confused what it meant. I'm glad I took a chance on it and really enjoyed the plot.

I received a copy of this book through Hidden Gems for an honest review.

I don’t know how to review this book. Some books you are happy to have read, others you wonder why you bothered. This one, I want to keep on (re)reading. This one is heartbreakingly beautiful. Oh Dax...

I have liked all the books in this series so far, and was very happy to read that Patricia D. Eddy is planning many more, because the characters from previous books will make their reappearances and the men and women featured in these that have not found love yet (or lost it like Ford, in the next book ‘By Lethal Force’) deserve their chance at happiness, and an exciting ride getting there!

So much better than I thought it would be...

Wow. I cannot tell you how much this story grabbed me and held me hostage for the entire book. Dax...is such a special character. And Evianna is the perfect foil. Their journey is not easy however these two were made for one another. Lots of intrigue, lots of inside Boston jokes (which I loved!), and heart and soul that kept me reading straight thru to the end. Serious heart pounding and the characters are amazing. I highly recommend.

I’ve tried 3 by this author now

I’ve read three books by this author this weekend. After the third one I tried, I’ve decided I won’t seek these books out on purpose. I felt like poor Dax just kept getting beat up in this book. This one included another computer job oriented female. In general I just didn’t relate to the female much. I wasn’t interested in her job and the tech jargon surrounding it. Her job was a major element in this book and I got bored super fast. But I hate to quit a book, so I pushed through. I liked Dax well enough.
No major grammar or editing errors, that was a good thing. In general the book was middle of the road for my taste.

It's rare for me to read a book that I can barely put down but this is one of those books!

Second Sight is the 4th book in the series and my first book from this author.

It has has the components that I look for in the books I read: mystery, suspense, hot romance and angst. This book has all of that and more.

The book starts with a description of what Dax went through his dark times while being held captive. I appreciate the author not being graphic about this and definitely knew the show rather than tell in this manner. The author was actually on point about this matter throughout the entire book, the story was felt rather than "seen" (no pun intended). Fast forward to present Dax, blind and managing a private security company while trying to sort his friendships, relationships and himself. Enter Evianna, brilliant CIO on the verge of her company's program launch when she get threats to her person. This was a highly stressful situation from the start and being threatened for your life was a compounded stress. The author did a brilliant balance for the female protagonist. She was no Mary Sue but was strong on her own while realizing she needed the help. I applaud the author for this which I think is very hard to balance in a romance book when there's an Alpha male. Dax was also well written where you feel empathy for him (and not because he's blind) but how he courageously dealt with his trauma, tried to adjust to his current situation and realize that his condition didn't dictate his worth or who he was as a person. Although I was eager to know who was behind the threats, I enjoyed the focus more on the development of the couple's relationship. There was certainly a hot chemistry between them even with the initial misunderstandings and distrust. But they worked through the relationship and on themselves. This also brought positive ripple effect on Dax's relationship with his coworkers and friends.

Another side thing that I truly appreciated from this story is our "gift of sight". It made me realize deeply that to be able to see, is something that we often take for granted. From being able to see dog poop and being able to avoid that to being able to distinguish between your vitamin bottle vs rat poison that can be a matter of life and death. Even being able to type this and read such a great book, is truly a gift. Thank you, Author!

Since this is book 4, I look forward to checking out the other books in her series. So happy to have found another author I could follow and support.

If you're looking for an emotional read, great characters (including the females!) and good plot, give this book a try. You won't regret it!

I loved the previous book On His Six and when Second Sight came across my Instagram feed I realized it was the next book about Dax, who we met previously (but very briefly).
So this is Dax's story.
It's been 6 years since he's returned home and recovered from Hell, battered, scared and blind. He's got walls a mile thick around him. He's moody and angry. Thankfully those around him are kind and understanding and will call him on his s*it when needed.
New client Evianna walks in with what seems to be a basic stalking case--fired former coworker has come at her a few times and she's not having anymore of this. At the consultation meeting you can just feel the attraction between Evianna and Dax, and Evianna isn't quite sure what his deal is--until she finds out the next day he's blind.
They take on her case, and initially Ford is point, but is called away on another matter (which is the subject of the next book) so Dax is left being point as they are severely understaffed.
Evianna is a whiz coder at her company currently just about ready to launch her baby Alfie (think Alexa on steroids) when she catches Kyle has stored the programming on and offsite cloud server, and has to fire him. He warns her that somethings is very wrong with the coding but she won't listen. They have a couple run-ins after he's let go that lead her to Dax's company for help.
Virtually the next day things escalate quickly and Dax brings Evianna back to his house to keep her safe. And the sparks start flying! Like instantly. Its so cute to watch them dance around the obvious. Dax is all self conscious about his scars, and wondering what she sees in him that's worthy. They help calm and center one another. Dax is surprised at how quickly Evianna adapts to his strict lifestyle at home--if things are not left EXACTLY where he's put them it could be catastrophic for him. Both of them have strong/controlling personalities so there's a lot of give/take and dancing around.
We get the story on what happened to Dax in Hell; how Ry came back and rescued him; how he recovered, got divorced, and has been keeping everyone at arms length. We also watch how Dax and Ry start to reconnect after the 6 years since coming home. An interesting insight to male friendship.
Dax gets Wren involved to help with the hacking stuff to try and figure out who's behind the stalking. Evianna finds some of Kyle's notes about the coding and is trying to figure out what happened the night she was attacked in her home and Alfie didn't "turn on".
Something in my gut says her sleazy boss Noah is involved with this hole thing.
After the break in they move to a hotel for safety, and boo-ya! Let's get it on! Dax & Evianna give in to the chemistry between them. He cannot believe she's not repulsed by his physical body/scars, and she begs him to let her in.... The next morning Dax runs out to get breakfast at the corner store, and asks where the condoms are, and you can tell he's terrified--one for asking, and two for wanting to believe there's something real with Evianna, something that he's so desperately been missing--love.
The story quickly moves closer to the launch of Alfie, crazy stuff happens and we're at the Launch Party. And all hell breaks loose. Both are kidnapped--by Noah (I KNEW he was behind all this!).
Noah explains to Evianna that he was trying to frame Kyle for this, but he ended up breaking his neck, so he had no choice but to put the screw to her. Apparently Kyle found the coding errors that would allow Noah to basically steal information from the rich/famous/powerful to blackmail them for years allowing himself to live the life of luxury....and oh by the way, Evianna, you have to commit suicide or the plan won't work.
Well Dax to the rescue!
Somehow the bad guys end up dead and they both take refuge in a bar run by a former Marine (who consequentially ends up going to work for Dax!)
They go to the police and tell their stories, and are released.
Evianna realizes that Alfie will still go live on Monday with the bad coding and rallies the programmers to do a marathon fix session.
They are successful and Alfie launches on time,
Then Dax lays a whammy on Evianna. He takes her to the botanical gardens...and proposes to her!!!!
And happily ever after!
I hope there's a book coming of their wedding and Wren & Ry's--because the end of the book leaves us with the guys agreeing to a double wedding the end of the year!!

I have been subscribed to an ARC service for about a year, and I found Patricia Eddy through that service. I read her book, On His Six, and quickly fell in love with her story-telling. As is the case with someone like me who reads A LOT of books, I almost missed the release of the next book in the Away from Keyboard Collection, Second Sight. And I’ll be honest. I am incredibly thankful that I didn’t miss it. I have wanted Dax’s story, and Eddy created a story that quickly made him my favorite character within this series.

Second Sight is the story of Dax and Evianna. In On His Six, Ryker’s story, we meet Dax, Ryker’s best friend from his days in the military and a fellow POW survivor. Unfortunately, neither of them fared well back in the real world: Ryker hides from his friend and much of society and Dax, blinded during his captivity, hides behind work. Both of them struggle with their experience, and it has created problems in their friendship, namely Ryker’s absence from Dax’s life.

As the story begins, Dax is still reeling from Ryker’s re-entry into his life. He prefers to continue on as if nothing has changed, even though Ryker is making an effort to repair their friendship. However, Dax is struggling. Can he let Ryker back in?

Enter Evianna, a CIO for a tech company, preparing for the release of an industry-changing technology. This tech is her baby, and her life has revolved around its creation. Unfortunately, after firing one of her top employees, she finds herself threatened by him. After several frightening situations, she decides to hire Dax’s security company for protection. From the outset, Dax is drawn to Evianna. As the threats become more life-threatening to Evianna, Dax feels an innate need to protect her. In their time together, Dax and Evianna’s attraction grows, but Dax struggles with letting people into his life due to his disability and disfigurement from the months of torture as a POW. Will Dax allow Evianna into his heart? Will he recognize that she doesn’t see him as damaged or a burden? Will he let go of his past to find his future? Those are the questions of Eddy’s book.

If you asked me what I love most about Eddy’s writing, I would say her story-telling. Oftentimes with romance, the development of story is secondary to the chemistry of the characters or their $exual chemistry or even the character development itself. Eddy is a masterful story-teller. She absolutely knows how to create characters who move a story along. The depth of Dax’s character is the angst of this story. There is a moment in the Boston Arboretum that is essential to understanding the depth of Dax’s despair over his “brokenness.” Eddy crafts this moment to illustrate the significance of Dax’s worry over acceptance. She puts these words in Evianna’s voice: “This one’s...broken. Damaged. But it’s still beautiful. [...] It fell, but ...it still smells just as sweet as the rest.” It’s this quintessential moment in Eddy’s story that grabs the reader’s heart as the realization of Dax’s pain is evident. And at that moment, Dax too realizes he is not broken. He is simply a different version of an earlier self. You can’t help but read this part of the story and not feel goosebumps up your arms because Eddy makes you feel the heaviness and importance of it.

I think the other part of Eddy’s writing that I love beyond her storytelling is her willingness to allow her characters to fall in love without too much angst. There is usually a bit of a fight, but it is never prolonged, and the hero and heroine then work together to overcome the outside threat to their relationship. This happens in this book with Dax and Evianna. They are quick to become attracted, quick to realize their feelings, and fairly quick to fall in love. This is the power behind her stories; they are more than just romance. They are romantic suspense with more suspense than romance, in my opinion.

I’ll be honest. I couldn’t put Second Sight down. It has equal parts romance, action, and angst. It is driving and keeps you engaged throughout. Even better, the epilogue is EVERYTHING. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, By Lethal Force, Ford’s story. I read the Prologue for the next book, and all the qualities of Second Sight and On the Six are in it.

Read this book. You will definitely not regret it.

“You’re…my light, Evianna. I don’t know how else to say it. You…chase some of the darkness away.”

This is hands down my favorite book in this series. The characters, the plot, the action…everything screamed perfection. Seriously, I freaking LOVED THIS BOOK. I was so obsessed that I actually read it through twice before I wrote this review. Another *very* important fact to note is that I actually bought this e-book. Patricia D Eddy’s Away From Keyboard series is not available on Kindle Unlimited, which is how I read almost all of my books. I’m in a romance reader group on Facebook and our author posted that this book was on sale for 99 cents this week only. Guys…I’ve been waiting for this book to go on sale for SO LONG. I jumped at the chance to grab it. This is my first purchase of an ebook on Kindle! So totally worth it!

In this novel we get to delve a little more in Dax’s life. We meet him in book three of this series, On His Six, with Ryker and Wren. I had the pleasure of reading that book when it was available on KU for a hot second. Best grab EVER. Anyway, so yes we get to know Dax in this story. We also meet Evianna, a coder (similar to Wren who was a hacker) who gets herself in a bit of trouble when a project goes awry. Her life is threatened and she needs protection, so she reaches out to Dax’s company, Second Sight. They are a private security firm made up of ex military men and women. When Dax’s main man has to go off grid to deal with some personal issues, it leaves Dax to protect Evianna himself. Only problem is…he’s blind.

In this story, we get to navigate the world as Dax experiences it, through smell, sound, and touch. Dax falls in love with Evianna for everything that she is, not what she looks like. She even comments on how she’s carrying about thirty extra pounds on her that she shouldn’t be because of her eating habits. But we never see her. As the reader, you’re never really given a clear picture of her because Dax can’t ever see her. We know that she has chestnut hair and fair skin because of how Ryker describes her to Dax one time. Other than that, it’s all about how she smells and the sounds she makes and what she feels like. It’s incredible and so sexy. The writing is sensual and passionate. It sucks you in and feeds your soul as our story moves. Everything about Dax and Evianna is gorgeous and remarkable. I can’t believe it took me this long to read this book!! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. Brilliant and lovely ❤

I don't even know where to begin with this book. It was amazing, it made me feel all the feels and more.

We first met Dax Holloway in the previous book, 'On His Six' as Wren's boss who is pretty closed off, secluded from others and is battling his own inner demons. He is the owner of a security company, Second Sight. Dax was a POW in Afghanistan with his buddy Ryker, and they were the only two members of their team to survive torture in Hell and both survive. They both have stories with every scar on their body, but Dax came back from Hell blind, unlike Ryker. He has learned how to be pretty independent and rely on his other senses even tho he is blind. It's been six years since he had been rescued and the nightmares still haunt him, and he lives a pretty lonely life.

Evianna Archer is CIO for Beacon Hill Technologies. For years she, along with her boss, have been working on a home automation/security device. It’s almost completed and everyone is working around the clock to tweak any last few bugs. One of their employees has breached his contract and has to be let go. He doesn’t take it well, and Evianna quickly realizes she needs protection and she goes to Second Sight for help. She and Dax find themselves thrown together as he is short staffed and she needs protection. The chemistry between them is strong from the start and Dax feels the need to make sure she is safe at all costs. Dax hasn't been with anyone for six lonely years, so nobody has ever seen his scars, which he is very self conscious and hesitant about. But Evianna sees Dax for the man he is on the inside, and for the hero who has been through more than anyone should go through in ten lifetimes. She sees a strong, beautiful man on the outside, and the inside.

Together, they face their inner demons together, as a team as they try to find out who wants Evianna dead. We also get to hear from Ryker and Wren from 'On His Six', which I absolutely loved as well! We also get to see Dax and Ryker build their relationship again which I also really enjoyed seeing. This book was everything!! Dax and Evianna are perfect together and they not only bring out the best in each other, but they see each other for what's on the inside, not just their appearances. I don't know how Patricia D. Eddy managed to write another outstanding book, with so many emotions and suspense. I actually felt like I was walking with Dax and could feel how hard it was for life as a blind man. I don't know how she did it, but she wrote one hell of a book!

Awesome Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Intense!
Second Sight: An Away from Keyboard Romantic Suspense Standalone
Away from Keyboard, Book 4
By: Patricia D. Eddy
Narrated by: Aiden Snow, Grace Grant

This book is absolutely amazing, it grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end. Patricia D. Eddy is a gifted author and a master at writing suspenseful romance novels, this story took me to the edge of my seat several times. This book is Dax Holloway and Evianna Archer’s story. Special Forces Sergeant Dax Holloway was tortured and held captive for fifteen months. He has settled into civilian life, started an elite investigative firm called Second Site. That firm became his life and his existence, it was all he had until she walks in and changes how he sees things. Evianna is working on the project of a life time, coding and creating new home security technology that will become a household name. But not everything is on the up and up at her job and she finds she is in danger, the police can only do so much so she turns to Second Sight for security and to find out who is going after her. Dax usually works behind the scenes but when several of his colleagues get called away to work another job he works more directly with the client, Evianna. I loved these two together, Evianna was drawn to Dax, she really got him and what was behind the broken shell of himself. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some angst, action, mystery, thrilling suspense, heartfelt and emotional moments and a great romance. Patricia D Eddy, thank you for another awesome story, I love the characters in this series, they are perfectly imperfect, broken in their own ways yet they are naturally born heroes who continue to help others in one way or another.

And for the fabulous narration, Aiden Snow and Grace Grant are fabulous narrators voice artists. They continue to do an awesome job bringing these character to life. Their portrayal of the characters is spot on, they take each role and make it their own, sounding naturally and just as I picture them to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story capture the character’s emotions and projects them into their performance. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧
