After having her heart broken, Adelaide Muchmore wants to get on with her life, move to New York, start her masters program and then, maybe, start dating again. But her mom has other plans, she connives for Adelaide to come to Salt Lake for the summer with the goal of finding her a husband. Adelaide agrees to date Paul, the med student her mom has picked out for her. The only problem is his roommate, George, a hedge fund manager who is far too good looking to be trusted.
Ruth Mitchell strongly believes the world needs more happy endings. She aims to write “hospital waiting room” books, stories that cheer and distract readers when their world is crumbling, make them laugh and sigh, and finish with a little more hope. All of her books are love stories with plenty of banter, and sizzling chemistry, but no spice. (Just kissing.) Ruth and her husband live in San Diego, where their four mostly-grown children visit often. She loves long rambling conversations, baking (she makes the best pie), hiking, and running (slowly) along the coasts and canyons of Southern California. .
I penned this story years ago for my teenage daughter. I wrote it for fun, not intending to publish because the characters are members of my faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly referred to as Mormons. I wasn’t sure there’d be an audience for Adelaide because, so often books about my religion written by outsiders tend to mock or criticize while those written by members of the church usually promote the faith, or at the very least, contain an uplifting spiritual message. This book is not about any of that. It’s simply a love story set in a world I know. After sharing Adelaide with friends, I was overwhelmed by the response. They shared it with their friends who shared it with their friends. Turns out a lot of people, of all sorts of religious backgrounds, really like Adelaide. I hope you do too.
“She had told herself that it was some trick of his, making people like him. But she now knew that most people liked George Allen because of his generous heart.” This was a super sweet Mormon romance. I am not Mormon (I’m an atheist actually) but I have Mormon family and friends and it was fun to read this story that heavily featured Mormon characters and Mormon culture without being proselytizing or cringy. I loved how the author leaves footnotes after each chapter explaining aspects of her religion with no defensiveness and no haughtiness, just facts tinged with humor. The romance was filled with angst, miscommunication, and young adult drama. At times I hated George and loved him. At times I hated Adelaide and loved her. But I did love them together. I also enjoyed how so many others could see how they felt about each other before they did. A meddling community is sometimes the best community. All in all this was a fun, light, romantic, angsty, escape of a book.
I loved this sweet romance so much! The writing, the explanations of LDS culture, and the excellent character development all felt Very Ruth Mitchell. . If you need a fluffy escape of a book, buy yourself some kindle vella credits and enjoy!
1/14/26: Loved this more the 2nd time through, probably because I was able to read it as an actual book and not on my phone via kindle Vella. This sweet romance captures so much of young LDS/Utah dating culture so well. Ruth Mitchell is a gem.
This is the sweetest story of love at first site detailed by so many well intentioned people I’ve ever read. Sometimes you read a book that’s so good it gives you the warm and fuzzies and you find yourself grinning at it like a lunatic. I need sequels!!! I need Poppy’s love story and I’m going to need Maud’s love story because if ever there was a woman who deserves it, it’s her and she’s so open to it!!
Super cute chick lit! It was my first experience with a Kindle-vella. I am not a fan, because they draw you into the story and then you have to buy tokens to unlock future episodes (chapters). In the end, I didn’t have enough tokens to read the alternate ending, but I didn’t want to buy more so I am just going to have to go with the original ending. The story was creative and fun, and since it was written by a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I liked how the author explained some of the “Mormon” culture at the end of each chapter so non-members could understand it. I took one star off for the Kindle-Vella part. Not a fan
This book was so fun and so witty and just the perfect story to keep you going crazy, while hoping against hope that it would end like you wanted it to. Highly recommend!
I first read this when it was on Kindle Vella and was absolutely HOOKED. I couldn't wait for the next installment. The sweetest, most feel-good love story about a couple you can't help but root for.
