The vast majority of teachers enjoy teaching and are positive about their workplace and colleagues, but they are disappointed by the profession. According to the UK’s Health and Safety Executive, teaching staff and education professionals report the highest rates of work-related stress, depression and anxiety in Britain.
A colossal 81% of teachers say that they have considered leaving teaching in the last year because of workload. I’ve been there myself, and I have come out of the other end triumphant.
In this book I’m going to show you that it is possible to be a guilt-free, effective teacher, without compromising on the quality of your teaching or time with friends and family, and without giving away your precious evenings, weekends and holidays.
The book includes true and tested strategies which continue to work well for me, and I’m confident they will work for you. I’ll provide you with ‘real world’ tools from someone who, just like you, is in the classroom Monday to Friday.
I’m going to demonstrate how you can tackle your ever-increasing workload, including both ways of reducing it and ways to improve your own productivity. I’m going to show you that it is possible to obtain healthy levels of occupational well-being and truly achieve a work-life balance. You are going to get your life back.
Hi, I’m Bruno and I’m a Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese) in my fifteenth year as a qualified professional.
I have worked mainly in South London in mixed state comprehensive schools, and recently moved up to Nottinghamshire. I’ve been a Head of Department for eight years now, and at my previous school I was also a Lead Practitioner for Middle Leaders. I currently line manage Performing and Visual Arts as well as Modern Foreign Languages.
I truly enjoy working in education, making a difference and inspiring students, as well as supporting other members of staff. Through my various roles I have mentored, coached and guided hundreds of teachers and middle leaders and watched them develop and succeed as professionals. This is extremely gratifying and is certainly one of the aspects of the job that I enjoy the most.
Similarly, I’ve been pleased with my examination results throughout the years which have been above national averages both in terms of attainment and progress, particularly because they directly translate into further future opportunities for the pupils I teach. Their successes and achievements are paramount.
In 2015, the Good Schools Guide awarded me a certificate for ‘Excellent performance by Girls taking AS Spanish at an English Comprehensive School’. In certain academic years, my GCSE results have been ranked in the top 1% and 3% nationally. A few years ago, I was invited to speak at a Schools, Students and Teachers network (SSAT) Teaching Conference and presented ‘Modern Foreign Languages: A Blueprint for Success’ to other colleagues from a range of subject areas around the country.
I hope you find my book 'Teacher Workload: How to Master it and Get Your Life Back' a valuable template to truly achieve a work-life balance.
Having read the book this is nothing new to what we as teachers attempt, day in and day out. It is focussed heavily on one teachers aspect opposed to a whole school approach. Quite disappointed having read this from start to finish to realise my school has adopted all these strategies and workload has increased not decreased.
Not all relevant to me as a primary teacher but some excellent tips.
I found the tips about managing time useful however the advice on just not writing www and ebi in books if you work at a school that requires it wasn't that helpful or realistic
This book had some good tips. Would be more useful for secondary teachers as some of the advice was not relevant to primary teaching. However, there were some useful tips about not procrastinating or getting sidetracked and about time-management.
While most of the strategies given in this book are nothing new, they are a great reminder to all teachers about the importance on looking after yourself and avoiding 'burn out'. A handy little book that is good to refer back to if you feel that you are not getting your work life balance correct.
