From the author of the Kellington and Emerson Regency romances, comes the third book in the Jasmine Cottage series set in the early Victorian era.
Daphne Peyton lives a quiet life in the country, a welcome change from a traumatic childhood. With little chance of marrying because of her modest background, she contents herself with her art and the dear friends she lives with at Jasmine Cottage. But when she gets the chance to help queen and country, she jumps at the chance to have an adventure, especially one with such a handsome gentleman.
Jeremy Beckett is recently retired after a career as a spy on the continent. But when an old foe appears, he's pressed into service once again. This time, he needs the help of a beautiful woman who's an expert on art. After a career of violence and lies, Jeremy isn't certain he can give his heart to anyone. However, the more time he spends with Daphne Peyton, the more he hopes it's possible.
WHERE LIGHT SHINES is the story of two wounded souls who find true love with each other. It contains a tiny bit of history and a fair amount of graphic language of a sexual nature.

I love that today's writers use their art to make sense of modern situations in a historical light. With this latest installment in the Jasmine Cottage series, the mysterious past of Daphne Peyton is at last unveiled.
It always amazes me that children who are the products of sexual misadventure are the ones tarred and feathered with a bad reputation and made to feel unworthy and scandalous. Maureen Driscoll takes us through Daphne's journey of self discovery and rewards her with a most dashing hero in the process.
Jeremy Beckett is the hero every woman needs. He is strong, sensitive, self aware and supportive. He is an alpha male without being an alpha hole. I loved the way that he respected Daphne and made her comfort his main goal throughout the story. He was raised well.
I love the way that Driscoll is dropping bread crumbs on the Emma Moore situation. I know they love each other. What happened? Just keep leading me on. I will keep following along faithfully.
Her villains were creepy, cringeworthy and oh so realistic. Women everywhere who read this book will nod their heads in recognition of the pathological penis exposing cretins that inhabit her early Victorian world. As I write this review, I'm daily assaulted with a new revelation of yet another powerful man being toppled from his lofty heights by the voice of a woman finally speaking her truth. May this trend continue.
Stay tuned for the epilogue! It made me smile so widely!
Didn’t finish at 84%. I struggled to get that far and finally I just decided I didn’t want to struggle anymore haha. It’s fine, but the writing/storytelling is clunky and not very engaging. I’m not pulled in. Here are a few examples of what I mean. In the first place, the book jumps between random people’s povs all throughout the story. Sometimes it’s because the author is trying to show us a little sneak peak into her other books. Other times it’s just because it was the easiest and laziest way to get information to us, such as villain’s plans and motivations. It just breaks up the flow so much for me. It takes me right out of the story because it feels so out of place. Another thing that was always happening were things like in one chapter Jeremy would monologue about how he didn’t think he’d ever settle down and probably didn’t want to ever be married and didn’t want commitment. But then in the next chapter he was telling Daphne that he wanted to be more involved with her and that he didn’t want something temporary with her and wanted a commitment. And there was no transition shown to us of that random change of heart He just declares it out of nowhere. Their entire relationship is that way though. One minute Jeremy says he doesn’t want to have their first kiss be rushed and unromantic because they were in a carriage. But then in like the next few pages their first kiss happens in a place where they have to be rushed and isn’t romantic. There are so many instances just like this that make the storytelling so clunky.
Jeremy was pretty dull. He does everything right and says all the right things. He’s just kinda lame. I did like Daphne a lot more than Jeremy so she sort of saved some of the story for me. But their relationship was dull and didn’t have much chemistry. Their story starts out with Daphne saying the only man to catch her eye was Jeremy. They had already met before the book starts. Then in the next chapter Jeremy says the only woman to catch his eye was Daphne. Wow. How intriguing haha. So they both like eachother immediately and easily and the rest of their relationship comes just as easily and is pretty lame. And Every time Jeremy is intimate with Daphne it always feels so abrupt and out of nowhere. Every time. Each time their relationship progressed it always felt forced and unnatural.
I had to skim quite a bit to get through this. It’s fine and very straightforward. Daphne is a good character so it has that going for it.
Where Light Shines, is a delightful addition to the Jasmine Cottage series. I find the Ladies of Jasmine Cottage an entertaining group of characters. Independent, outspoken and willing to stand up for the disenfranchised; their friendship is an inspiration for me and I am sure other female readers. With each book, Ms. Driscoll, allows us to delve deeper into the life of another resident of Jasmine Cottage. In Where Light Shines, we learn more of what drives Daphne Peyton's life and dreams. I especially like how Maureen Driscoll slowly reveals pieces of Daphne's history as the story unfolds. Her talented way with words, paints a detailed picture of Daphne. It is like staring at one the masterpieces in the British Museum! And as usual her characters are so relatable, despite being both fictional and from a different era than my own.I became so involved with Daphne, I couldn't help but wish for her happiness as she discovered her soulmate in Jeremy Beckett, the hero of the novel. Jeremy became one of my favorite male characters, next to his brother Carter from book 2. There is less sarcastic banter between the two main characters in this book. I admit I miss the witty repartee as the women, put the heroes in their place! However, Where Light Shines, has far more of a mystery plot than the others in the series. This time the heroine is matching wits with possible villains. The parties with the demi- monde are rather explicit in the sexual encounters, I would not have expected in the age of Queen Victoria's reign. Yet, I am sure such reprobates exist in every era! The setting was perfect for the intrigue that was main plot for this story. The action had me up late at night trying to solve the mystery along with Jeremy and Daphne. Again, Maureen Driscoll's masterful storytelling has me imagining myself a silent observer, off in the shadows, as the action plays out in front of me. I believe good fiction allows the reader to escape reality, getting lost in the magical world of make believe only excellent writers create. Maureen Driscoll's Jasmine Cottage series is a great example of this.
I wanted to love this story from start to finish. After finishing book 2 and realizing that I’d have to experience two more books before reading Emma’s and Ausley’s HEA, I skipped books 3 and 4 just to read this one. My earnest excitement likely contributed to my heightened disappointment in this read.
Authors often write historical romances where the men and women don’t talk to each other and make a grand mess of things. If that’s all that happened here, I wouldn’t be happy, but I’d deal. Yet, to make a sad situation worse the hero’s mother is a manipulative harpy and he gives her ample opportunity to subject his new lovely wife to her cruelty. Of course, the heroine, who is supposed to be a smart woman, takes the mom’s word as though it were golden. She also doesn’t share the conversations with her husband further exasperating matters and allowing her to misinterpret his absences. I kept skipping pages throughout the book and was still exhausted and frustrated by all the foolishness.
I had such high hopes for this one and it wasn’t until the end of chapter 30 that things started righting themselves. I’ve greatly enjoyed other books by this author and I hate that this read didn’t allow us to see Emma and Audsely as the smart and insightful people we’ve come to love and appreciate. Sigh😞
It has been a joy getting to know the ladies who have lived together in the cottage. After meeting Arabella and Grace I was excited to learn more about Daphne.
Daphne's story begins with her friendship with the Moore sisters but her true story goes way back before then. Having survived a traumatic childhood Daphne meets and teams up with Jeremy Beckett a spy for the throne. When the two meet sparks ignite and they are drawn together.
Daphne is smart, beautiful, and resourceful which is just what Jeremy needs in order to make the lie work and find out the information he needs to save the Queen.
While on the mission Daphne and Jeremy find themself falling for each other. Can Daphne forest her past to find love and Can Jeremy trust enough to open his?
I truly love finally getting to know these two people. Maureen did a wonderful job not only telling their story but intertwining it with the other ladies. I was also impressed with how well Maureen dealt with the subject of sexual abuse. While respecting the victims she gave a voice to a survivor.
I am truly in love with the ladies of Jasmine Cottage and can not wait to delve into Lily's story next.
I knew I had read some books in this series but thought I had missed some so I started with book one and am working my way through. They are every bit as good the second time around. I wanted to read in order to be able to keep the characters straight.
Jeremy and Daphne have very different backgrounds. He is the second son in a k noble family, she is the daughter of a courtesan. Daphne was educated at boarding school along with Emma and Grace. They found her in London and upon learning she was in dire straights took her to live with them at Jasmine Cottage. She met Jeremy when Grace married his brother and was instantly taken with her. Their station in life is the least of their story. Jeremy has been called back into service as a spy and Daphne gets caught up in his assignment. There is mystery and intrigue along with liaisons and an unexpected ending.
I'm enjoying revisiting books I have read and looking forward to more. This is expertly written. I highly recommend.
Daphne has a past. Her mother was a kept woman. When this truth comes out she is dismissed from her post as an art teacher at a girl's school. Luckily two of her friends and ex-students invite her to live with them in the country.
Years later one of these friends is married to an Earl. When Daphne meets his younger brother Jeremy there is an instant attraction and awareness between the two.
Jeremy has been working as a spy for the crown. There is rumour of a plot against the Queen by an old enemy and Jeremy asks for Daphne's assistance as a cover.
Things get complicated when Daphne poses as his mistress at a country house party. Tension and emotions run high as other men start to look at Daphne as a potential paramour. All while Jeremy tries to foil the plot which could see him and Daphne who he is falling in love with, in danger.
Daphne was a smart and courageous innocent and part of the "sisterhood" of friends at Jasmine Cottage. We already met Jeremy in the previous book. He was a former spy. This book could be read as a standalone because the author does some recap ( not in the boring way some authors do) so you can catch up fine. There are steamy sex scenes and some rather hedonistic situations so beware. It has a HE A and a set up for the next book too! I have really enjoyed this book.
Very good read. I especially loved the last chapter! This story of two people who fall in love was well written, though it did contain a couple of typos. Jeremy and Daphne are perfect for each other and her past isn't an obstacle. I loved Jeremy's mother and her sweet little side love story. The intrigue was also very nice and quite fun, however, I didn't care for the conveniently quick ending to the the spy adventure. The twist was nice though. You'll have to read the story to understand. I'm off to enjoy the next book in the Jasmine Cottage series.
This is Daphne and Jeremy’s story. Jeremy is the younger brother of Carter from book 2. This book was a snooze fest. I kept waiting for excitement, a hook, anything to keep me invested. I skipped chapters, I had to it was oh so very slow and boring. Thank goodness I didn’t pay for this book. This book was like someone had all the ingredients to make a great soup, but didn’t have a recipe and got all of the proportions wrong. I’ll read book 4, but Lord let it be better than book 3. All I really want to do is skip to book 5 and read Emma and Audsley’s story.
The author asks readers to suspend too much disbelief about a number of things. Not the least of which is the heroine being accepted into the ton despite her scandalous origins. And we’re really supposed to believe that the evil earl patiently waited YEARS to “seduce” Daphne until she was “broken”? Too many situations weren’t fully explored or explained. So, it felt unsatisfying.
The ending was abrupt and simplistic. It felt like the author ran out of time and needed to wrap things up. This book didn’t entice me to read the rest of the series.
In a tough world of class & privilege, ‘fairy tale endings’ do happen; they may be rare but they do exist. This is one such. A story of two people with painful and difficult lives who simply fall in love, and in doing so ‘save’ each other. Throw in spies, assassination plots, missions in houses of ill repute, and we have a great race to the end. One question: why does she not ask who her father is? Loved the Epilogue! Must read!
Ms. Driscoll puts together sweet stories with happy endings for nearly all involved. She mostly leaves out the contrived kidnappers, audacious murder attempts and insane acts of jealousy. . . mostly. There are mylti--page sex scenes, but she rises above the vulgarity of slang words and -ing the scenes into the erotic section of the genre.
I am loving this series. I liked Daphne and Jeremy from the previous book, but they really were brought to life in this story. This book can be read alone, but perfect as a series. I highly recommend this book and all of the others by Maureen Driscoll..
I have been reading these stories and I am glad you brought the sexual problems into your story. I had a good Dad and my late husband was good to his children, but we knew his Dad abused his daughters and other girls. Sad world we live in.
I really enjoyed the first two in this series, however this book was very slow. I will definitely finish the series by reading the last book about Emma and I hope it won't drag as this one did.
This third in the Jasmine Cottage series was more like a spy novel with a lot of intrigue. It was an enjoyable read. I love the characters in Driscoll's series -- kind, loyal, ethical, and do not necessary follow societies expectations when they are not appropriate. I'm hooked on her romances.
This was a refreshing read. I enjoyed the charm and wit of Daphne and how she and Jeremy seemed perfect for each. I love this series of the Jasmine cottage..I recommend this book and author.
A delightful romance with some intrigue and a little danger. The author draws nicely on the issues of assassinating queen Victoria. Enjoyed reading the story would read another from this author
I've read a few of her books, this one wasn't my favourite. It just felt a little flat. I did like seeing an educated, intelligent woman portrayed, and it's also always nice to see a character who has seen hard times find happiness.
Entertaining and intriguing.Loved that there were really strong characters especially those that were accepting and loving freely without judgement. Enjoyed everything single page i turned.
This was diffently an exciting suspense story with several finances involved. It's very well written with a bit of intriguing circumstances to keep you reading on to the end. It's A great read.
