Tragedy has claimed its pound of flesh from the Chicago survivors. Homeless, low on supplies and struggling to find weapons, the group weighs the dangers of squatting in Chicago against the merits of reuniting with Rock in California. No matter the choice they make, the weeks and months ahead will exact a devastating toll. The measurement of such losses will be incalculable. Some will make it. Others will make their final stand. But who will they become along the way? And what will they risk for each other when all hell finally breaks loose?
The Age of Exodus is an emotional roller coaster ride with plenty of peaks and valleys, a few shocking twists, a handful of well-timed laughs and all-but-guaranteed loss of sleep. Before you head out with our survivors on the adventure of a lifetime, grab some caffeine, find a quiet place to read, then sit down, strap in and hold on because the ride is about to get bumpy…
* NOTE: The Age of Embers Series can be read as a stand alone series or in addition to The Last War Series. Both of these series are written in the same universe on the same timeline and some characters will overlap, especially in the series finale, The Age of Defiance. With tens of millions of pages read, more than seventy-thousand books sold, and hundreds of five star reviews, The Complete Last War Series is the perfect compliment to The Age of Embers Series.
Just a few ways people have died or been attacked in this book. What a ride! We only focus and Fire and Ice as they make their way with their caravan to California. There’s a lot of tragedies in this one and we lose some more. We also take a stop in Elko, NV which is where I currently live and I’m not going to lie, this part of the book doesn’t surprise me.
I’m excited to finish up this series and see how it all turns out. It’s not looking too good, but I have high hopes!
Age of Exodus by Ryan Schow Audiobook Read 1/11/21-1/14/21 Five stars
OK...the series is starting to wear on me a bit. Interestingly, nothing is mentioned about Maria and Carver...the entire story focuses on the trip from Chicago to California. Along the way, we experience the bubonic plague of all things, a child snatching tornado, finally cannibals, car thieving bandits with giant slingshot / bowling ball artillery, and Draven's decent into psycho status. All good fun I suppose, but it seems like the contract was for a 5 book series, so we need to drag out the trip. I can't stop now though. California here we come!!
Great series. Some of the characters are straying a bit from realism, but entertaining nevertheless. I feel like the author is trying to convey the inner struggle of having to abandon your previous morality in a situation like this, but doesn't have enough personal experience to convey that process realistically. In some cases, such as Dravin, he did rather well. But for Fire and Ice, it borders on annoying.
This book, to me really shows the dark side of this apocalypse. Can the people continue on without loosing their humanity? Even though it is the fourth book in the series, it is still action packed. A real page turner. I can’t seem to put then down to do anything else. There are several characters I really love. Only one more book to go. I actually read it after this one before I wrote the review of this one. That hard to put down.
I loved this book by Ryan Schow. I also loved these characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of this Ryan’s books. I listened to this book on audiobook.
3 stars for this one. Some parts in the middle were just weird and lacking when I know Schow could have shaped the story better. But made through that to a decent ending.
I cannot tell you how OMG on the edge of your seat this book is! From page one I could not put it down! Shit, shit, shit! One of the first books I ever read that opened my eyes was The Stand by Stephen King. It now stands in the shadows of this story! Can’t wait to get into the final chapter! If you are into what if’s and SHTF stories, this one is about as close as you’ll get to the reality. Another amazing book Ryan!
Shockingly surreal realism. Ryan Schow has created his own style of realism. And this character driven realism grabs you and wont let the reader out this story down. Ryan Schow has created this "Age Of" / "The Last War" universe that is both complex but yet very realistic/ believable. I personally appreciate the raw gutsy colourful character interplay. While at the same time I respect the storytelling for its layered universal appeal. Here I am reading and finishing this book in less than a day. I want more and think there's only one more book left but I hope that this story can be carried forward in possibly another series. I just like and respect these characters and story too much to let it go. Yes this story shows our very ugly human nature. But that ugliness can turn into beauty through the collaboration that we humans are drawn to when we form our families be they blood kin or adopted in. This Ryan Schow created universe has it all and he has shown his mastery of this post apoc genre. I'm certain this "Age Of" series will become benchmark classic. I can easily see other authors developing this universe further as this story has evolved into something very special indeed. Thanks Ryan for entertaining us but also giving us the modus to expand and develop our own unique perspectives.
While I am binge reading this series, life is on hold. I can not believe my kindle has only been turned off when I sleep. Thank goodness I can listen while working. That said, you can assume fellow readers I love this series.
Fav quote: spoiler alert..... “Robert,” he says, “but these guys call me Bob.” Looking at the screwdriver driven through the soft part of his neck, I say, “You’ve been skewered, Bob.” “I know.” “I’m going to call you Shish Kabob, if that’s okay,” I say with a pathetic snicker. He looks at me and now I really start laughing. He doesn’t. Two scenes I liked. The fight 25 -2. Going down the freeway. Dogs/rabid animals and men.
Uh oh. This contradicts Book 1. Making excuses for his behavior. We just blew this guy up. Now I don’t want you to get the wrong idea about us—we’re not casual murderers. We don’t enjoy this. It’s purely a matter of survival.
Every time I read one of the books in this series (I began with The Last War) I think he cannot top this but every single time you exceed all my expectations and then some!! This book was amazing I don’t know how you do it but the characters and the detailed plots are so real to the reader I forget I’m reading fiction and the scenarios that Fire and his family face makes you realize this could really happen you bring out things emotionally that is just so real but things most ppl would be scared to admit to, I’m just so happy that I don’t have to wait long for the next book I’m already hoping you never let this series end👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've read the entire Age of Embers series and several of the last war series and they have all been exciting reads. This story is about the trip of some survivors from Chicago to Sacramento and its probably the most brutal of the series. I was disappointed in the naivete of the characters, they were unable to locate good, weapons even knives, ammo or medicine while traveling half way across the U.S. They never posted a night guard, and made a lot of mistakes on the journey they could have maybe saved some of their lives. But the character development was good and you could identify with them easily.
Bar none, the best EMP, survival, post apocalyptic series out there. Spoiler Alert: I was profoundly sad that Orlando and His girlfriend were killed. Did not see that one coming. However, the group somehow manages to push on.
So much death, destruction, that you will wonder if you aren’t better off with one between the eyes. Anyhow, no more spoiler alerts. But, I will say this is the most graphic thus far of this series. Don’t start what you can’t finish.
This entire series grabs you and doesn't let go. The characters are beyond real, I celebrated their accomplishments and mourned their losses. It is frightening how easily society could devolve into this world created by the author. I started with The Last War series, bought and binge-read all 4 books in this series. I've already preordered the 5th (and sadly final) book in The Age of Embers series.
This book has been an amazing, terrifying, gut wrenching expedition!! I have experienced every emotion possible, I have had to get up and walk away a few times just to catch my breathe. When a book can have you laughing, crying and raising your blood pressure into the dangerous levels you know you have a winner!! Cannot wait to continue this journey..........
I felt the gut wrenching heartbreak , I felt all the tears and I felt ,at times, I was fighting side by side with them. And at times I laughed with them. What a great story. Love how this series has merged with The Last War series. Hanging by a thread waiting for the conclusion
This series just gets better and better! Nonstop post apocalyptic action throughout! The characters are so well developed that they seem real. Anyone who likes this type of fiction will not be disappointed! I cannot wait for the next book to continue this survival story!
I love this series! The driving idea behind this series is different & very interesting. It’s not for the faint hearted or super liberal, but if you like a story that tells how different types of people react to extreme hardships, then this is the series for you. I look forward impatiently for the next book in the series and more from this author.
This book will leave you with a sleepless night just thinking of what might happen. It’s definitely an adult book with the graphic violence but I believe it was extremely realistic so necessary. Looking forward to the next in series for answers to come.
The characters are as real and if you knew them personally. It's intense, and hard to take at times, which of course only makes it a great book, and series, not merely "good".
The perfect ending to this book! I was devastated by all of the loss but am now excited to see what’s next! I can hardly wait. These characters meeting is an unexpected surprise. I am so excited!
Awesome! Could not put it down. Excitement all the way through to the end. Great writing. Characters you learn to love. Twists and turns you cannot begin to imagine...love this series!!!! Can't wait for the next one. In the series.
The Age of Exodus is a thrilling page turner! I can’t wait for the next book in this series. The characters come alive and will leave you thinking about them after you’ve finished this book!
The survivors going now going to to keep their heads up and continue to fight. I really enjoyed this book and hope that the next book is as good as this. It will be hard to shock and awe..
So good. I had to take a few breaks in reading this one, not because I didn’t like it (I love it), but to process what was happening. While I wait for book 5 I will be reading more of Ryan Schow’s books.
