Hold your head high. No matter what stands in the way of your dreams, remember this: YOU can push through anything! If someone tells you it’s too hard, don’t you ever listen. You tell them, “I’m gonna push through!”
Inspired by a mantra written for her third-grade students, Jasmyn Wright’s call to “push through” is an invitation to young readers to announce their own power and to recognize and reaffirm that of others, regardless of setbacks.
When you come up against a problem what do you do? You push through.
Look at all the people who have come up against problems in the past. What did they do? They pushed through.
The book encourages children to keep going when struggles are hard, and presents short summaries of those in the past who have pushed to accomplish their goals.
Besides important conversations about overcoming challenges, Avanelle (4-year-old) and I had important conversations about the diversity in this book. I can also see the conversations changing as she continues to grow.

"Push through" if things seem too hard, rough, or tough. Children aren't too young to push through - they can do anything they put their minds to. Just like the many examples of famous people who also pushed through. Such an empowering message! Believe in yourself, be resilient, push through difficulties.
I love the classroom connection to this book. What a great mantra to teach our students, that they can push through. While not a story, it's more of a roll call of so many famous people who pushed through and succeeded. The illustrations are great - children of all different races, identities and cultures, with challenges and disabilities. This would make a great addition to a lower elementary classroom and library.
I'm Gonna Push Through is a book about believing in yourself, no matter what challenges you may be faced with. A young girl is encouraged to "push through" when she feels like she has encountered something difficult. The author gives historic examples of people who have pushed through the hard times in order to achieve something great, such as Barack Obama and Stephen Hawking. Readers are taught that they are strong enough to handle tough things because they can do anything they put their mind too. The illustrations provide examples of children who are pushing through their circumstances. Wright continues to teach children the importance of encouraging others as well, and remembering that our lives have a purpose. In the end, the young girl is illustrated with all of her other friends who have pushed through their circumstances as they all proudly move toward making a difference.
The overall theme of I'm Gonna Push Through is the importance of believing that you are strong enough to handle or accomplish anything you put your mind to. No matter the circumstances, we should encourage each other and remember that we can make a difference just like the many people who have done so before us.
While reading I'm Gonna Push Through, I was pleased with the many examples that were provided in the illustrations. The examples ranged from children with racial differences, to children with disabilities, to children with differing sexual identities. It is very likely that all kids will relate to or be inspired by someone in the novel.
I would recommend this book because of the message that it sends to readers about being strong. Children need to be told that they are capable of accomplishing hard things. This book will help them build the habit of positive self-talk, as well as the habit of encouraging others.
Written by a teacher whose positive affirmations for her students have been shared around the world – this book reminds children that they can push through any problem, obstacle, or situation. The call and response nature of the text and the repetitiveness of the phrase “push through” will make it easier for kids to remember while reading and long after the cover is closed. The book contains pictures of several famous people who have overcome various things in their lives. While adults may know who the people are, most children will not – this can cause a bit of a distraction, but also allows for expanded learning opportunities. The glossary at the end of the book with these famous achievers can be a wonderful starting point. The book could have placed a bit more focus on getting/needing help to push through and achieve, but overall, it is a good conversation starter and mantra that can be given to children.
While I enjoyed this book, I really loved the author's note in the back regarding how this idea came to be. Being a teacher, I know how much we think about our students and want to help them when they are with us, and after they have left us. We always hope that we have said or done something that will stick with them to make their lives better. Jasmyn Wright seemed to hit on something wonderful with her class chant/song that she brought to life in this book. It's a wonderful message reminding students that they are already born with everything they need and they are amazing. That message can easily get changed for a variety of reasons and we have to do everything we can to ensure that it is strong enough inside the students to withstand outside forces. Thank you Jasmyn for sharing your message with all of us to share with our students.
I'm Gonna Push Through! by Jasmym Wright Illustrated by Shannon Wright Published in 2020 Read aloud to elementary aged students. This book is about a lot of famous people who had to "push through" and overcome the challenges they faced. It encourages readers to "push through" and never give up as there are other people who believe in you and it can also be the readers job to encourage others to believe in themselves as well! The book describes all the ways that we are unique and special, a book of empowerment. I enjoyed reading this book as it is literally a mental message to the reader that they are enough and are capable of doing anything. Definitely one to have in a classroom!

Inspired by a mantra written for her third-graders, Jasmyn Wright's uplifting call to "push through" is an invitation to young readers to announce their own power and to recognize and reaffirm that of others, regardless of setbacks. By diminishing doubt, encouraging community, and reaffirming that we're all here to make a difference, her empowering words show children how to lift themselves up and seize their potential.
This book talks about pushing through hard and difficult things. It gives examples of many influential people that pushed through hard things. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to share it with my future students. This book encourages students to believe that they can push through anything that is hard or seems impossible. It encourages them to believe that they can do anything they put their mind to. This book showcases many different ethnicities and ability levels to show children that no matter who you are, you can push through.

This book is about children worldwide pushing through and letting nothing get in their way. It shows all different kinds of children with different backgrounds, races and genders overcoming their fears or dreams.
The overall theme is being strong and pushing though. It's a movement that inspires kids worldwide. Telling the kids that they can push through ANYTHING!
Reading this book makes you feel strong and that you are invincible. I loved all the different scenarios it gave about encouraging kids to push through and keep going.
I would recommend this to boys or girls because its gender neutral and has a great message about whatever stands in the way of your dreams, keep pushing through. It will show kids that no matter how down they are or sad about something they will get through it. If something is hard or scary they can push through and conquer anything. A very motivational read.
An encouraging song created by an elementary school teacher and founder of the Push Through Organization is here turned into a picture book. The illustrations show a diverse group of children with many different skin tones, hair styles, gender presentations, and abilities. While the book is not a story and would be difficult to use in storytime, it could be a powerful tool in classrooms for teachers working with children who could use a reminder of how to access their own resilience.
This has an empowering message, but at times seems a little forced. I think the repetition is supposed to be one where the kids catch on and repeat the phrase, but it just didn't seem to have the effect while reading aloud. It also felt like a missed opportunity to share "examples" of people who pushed through without actually sharing anything about what they pushed through. It detracted from the book and led to a long side conversation and, in some instances, a Google search.
I personally think the message of this book is fantastic. My 3 year old still quotes the book and says she's gonna push through with some situations. I think it has a profound positive message. I just wish the author had more books for children and wasn't so geared mainly on one race. My daughter being 3 didn't get that message but of course I did. I actually wanted to buy this book but being a bit "directed" holds me back.
This is a beautiful book, and I loved that it featured famous and heroic people who were new to me. The overall message seemed good for kids, and the author clearly has infinitely greater expertise than me (with a helpful afterword!) but some parts, like "you were born for a reason - you were birthed with a purpose!" didn't resonate with me - but I am not the target audience!
This book was a lovely book, and I really enjoyed reading it and analyzing it. I loved how diverse the children in the book were depicted as and the great message the book was telling. Showing so many examples and situations where children can push through and make it through is such a great story to have to read to children to help them out.
So many different types of children are represented in the artwork in this book which makes it powerful. A beautiful message of pushing through any trial. Examples are given of famous individuals that have left their imprints on the world.
I'm gonna push through--until this endless stream of mediocre picture books with a purpose has worn out and we start getting back to books that represent a wide variety of races/religions/etc, but have good STORIES, not just pound_it_in messages.
read this because I follow the illustrator on social media and like her work. it was fine and cute, if a little trite. keep in mind that my thoughts might be different if I actually had children at this point!
Teaching children persistence with a simple mantra of “I’m gonna push through!” The book highlights famous people who kept going through adversity. Based on a real teacher in an inner city classroom.
I'm Gonna Push Through! by Jasmyn Wright motivational text added to the crew class, social emotional learning class. This book was presented to motivate the students pushing through tough experiences and keeping things going.
It's all about perseverance! You're good enough, you're strong enough. You can do it. Don't let anyone stop you. It could be used in Growth Mindset units.
