Falling from Grace

Rate this book
When Grace Chantry moves back to her small hometown of Tarn Junction, she’s lost everything from her big-city life except the one thing she’s kept secret: her selectively mute foster daughter, Synia, who is withdrawn from everyone—everyone, it seems, except eccentric local recluse Ida Cale. Struggling against the town’s disapproval, together Ida and Grace set out to help Synia find her words. But will Ida’s strange ways be enough to pull the child from her darkness and save both Synia and Grace from themselves?

I normally do not find a lot of books that hold my attention or want me to continue reading but this book definitely has done so. The moment I started it I couldn’t put it down. It kept you wondering what was going to happening next. I loved it and hopefully you will also. A Good Read for sure. I am hoping for a sequel!!!

I cannot explain how impressed I am of this debut novel by Coralee Boileau. The storyline is so original, the writing is captivating and the characters are deep and complex, yet even so, you feel like you get to know them well.

Grace Chantry returns to her hometown of Tarn Junction with a secret, her foster daughter, Synia, who is selectively mute and wildly unpredictable. The people from Grace’s past all play a unique part in the story, but when the special Ida Cale comes along, the connection she has with Synia may be just what they all need.

I will say it’s best to go into this book, not knowing more than what is said above. There were so many surprises along the way, and the plot has way more to it than I expected.

I can picture this small town perfectly in my head from the beautiful descriptions written and from the people it’s made up of. I felt like I was walking down the street right beside these characters.

Sometimes it feels conflicting to root for a character that doesn’t always make the best decisions, but Grace and Synia had my heart from the start, and that didn’t change throughout, despite some of the darkness along the way (not sure what that says about me 🤣). I couldn’t stop flipping the pages until I found out how their stories would unfold. A 5⭐️ read for me without question.

Put aside several hours to read this masterpiece because you won't be able to put it down for a split second. It's captivating, juicy, riveting, engaging, mesmerizing...but mostly, to me, it's real. It's deep. It's relevant. It's important to be read, to be felt, to be understood by all. This isn't just a well crafted, creative and inspiring story, it speaks to the life of many a tortured soul. Must read. You won't regret it. Put it this way, I finished reading the book sitting at a Tim Horton's in Gatineau and the ending of the book hit me so hard that I literally cried in the coffee shop. Yep. It's that powerful.

Wow - amazing! This was a fast-moving and emotionally-moving story of a woman who moves back to small-town Ontario with a newly adopted foster-daughter. But not all is as it seems. It’s impossible to do this review justice without spoilers, but I’ll avoid those. Suffice it to say that it’s compelling and wonderfully written. An amazing first novel from a Canadian author. I look forward to reading more of her books!!

But first, I’ll re-read this one to look for the clues, now that I know the ending.

This book is amazing. Just like previous reviews stated I couldn’t put it down. I would set it a side and minutes later I was picking it back up. I felt like I was actually wondering in this town with the people in the book. Wow such a talented author.

this book is so surprisingly dark and disturbing, but in a wonderfully real, human way, and laced together with compassion. the seemingly random darkness and confusion in the narrative weaves itself together so tightly. the characters are unforgettable. this impressive debut is a gorgeous exploration of grief, repression, healing, forgiveness, all wrapped up tightly in all our human love and flaws. I'm so glad I came across Coralee and her work. this novel will keep a permanent home in my heart.

A beautifully written and deliciously twisty debut novel from author Coralee Boileau. She deftly weaves together an extremely well written narrative filled with such relatable (but flawed) characters and vivid imagery, that you feel like you’ve been dropped right into Tarn Junction. This book is a like taking a stroll through a familiar and meandering road, unaware that a sharp corner is going to throw you off the trail you thought you knew.

This book is fantastic. I was swept away to small-town Ontario and completely engrossed in the lives of Grace and Synia. When I thought I had it all figured out, I was wrong. Things were not as it seemed for this family.

This was a captivating read for me from the beginning. I highly recommend this book!

Affecting!

This story takes you on a disturbing journey through the mind of young woman trying to settle back in to small town life . I found the attention to detail through her emotional turmoil, compelling. The emotion-investment toll required is refreshing.
