I liked the zombies in this book. They didn't seem the usual slow and rambling kind. Instead, they were humans that had been taken over by a parasite that could learn and adapt, which made it harder for everyone to survive.
The pacing was a little slow for me. Especially when the "flashbacks" started. They weren't really flashbacks but rather the MCs guesses as to what really happened in the camping shop.
I wish the plot was more focused on survival and the zombies themselves.
I liked Blinky's character. She was written with more humour, and she was just outside killing every zombie in sight and laughing the whole time while everyone else was inside debating what had happened.
The ending was good, and I'm glad they found the surviors from the camping shop and decided to help them.
Funny yet also a story to lighten the mood for Mr. Howie who thinks the people aren’t worth saving when they act like animals. Like a triumph of good vs evil or freedom.. but idk it just didn’t work for me.. it was funny at first with all the different versions of. What happened in the camping store. Also I think it was to boost the power of Reginald’s intelligence, as his character is pitted against the “virus” in a game of chess but IRL via the story.
Quick little read in rr haywood's undead series. The story is obviously about a quick stop in a camping store but its also about humanity and if we are worth saving. As the team looks for supplies they imagine what happened to the survivors at the camp store with everyone coming up with different scenarios. So far I have loved everything I have read by this author. He makes such realistic characters. This story is an easy way to give him a try.
This is a great short read from the undead series.
if you are like me and waiting for the next instalment then it helps bridge a gap until your next fix from Howie and the team. Highly recommend all the books in the ever growing series of zombies.
I've been reading this series one after the other and can't stop. Some of the grammar mistakes and typos annoy me but I love the story. I only hope there will be more.
A slightly less action packed offering from Mr Haywood. The story was still griping, but I felt it wasn't quite as connected with the usual characters as the other books.
These books are a roller coaster of emotions . They have you gripping your seat as you turn the page or laughing out loud . Great likeable characters .
Are usually don’t read short stories except from this author. Once again I found a short story fun and fast paced the introspection‘s of the characters were interesting, and I’m glad that situations worked out all right no spoilers. Because you did not know who lived or died until the end of the book it is worth a quick read.
[2024] Revisited this one because I found an audio version read by the author. It was a little better but it didn't warrant a change in stars. Perhaps if it was read by the series narrator? Probably would still be 3* stars to be honest. It's really just a filler novella but it was fun.
[2022] This is a short story based on The Undead series. It takes place at some point during Day 21 of the zombie infection outbreak.
The Living Army find themselves in a camping shop, covered in dead bodies, only it looks as though the group slaughtered each other. Different members of Howie's crew give their accounts on how they think it happened.
A good look at morality as the team question what they are fighting for.
Side note: This is the only story in The Undead series that I've read as an ebook, as opposed to an audiobook. This series is one that absolutely should be experienced as an audiobook. It's just so much better.
Just what I have been craving! In the world of Dave, Howie and crew, a side story of another group making an attempt at survival in a world falling down around their ears. I appreciate the different views from each character and Howie's personal take on the scene they stumble upon. Blinky is just doing her thing, as always. Please, please, more, soon!
Although this is a stand alone story it provides a good back drop to the undead series. It further builds on the main characters whilst highlighting the fragility of civilisation and morals under extreme conditions. Expect the usual excellent black humour, intense drama and emotional involvement. And of course disappointment you've reached the end of another excellent book
For a spin off story from the main Undead series this is pure brilliance, teaching us that what we see isn't always the truth of it, look deeper and you'll find the truth. All our favourite characters stumble across a camping shop in the midst of the apocalypse to find the remains of survivors, killed but not by the zombies (not zombies!) but by each other, together they unravel the how's and why's.
My deviation from book one of the Extracted series. Again, a clever piece of writing from RRH. Recommend this, almost a mini Agatha Christie without the drawn out ending. It had a few poignant moments for those who are up to date with the Undead series. If you aren't, get stuck into it, you won't be disappointed.
This was a short story about other survivors where our favorite charcters from the series show up. I was glad to find another book in the series but wasn't expecting this. It was tragic but the crew still brought humor to the story. I am waiting for more of the series to come out. I need another day.
Although standalone The Camping Shop will give you a glimpse of the scope of The Undead series. L Ron Hubbard coined the phrase Decology to describe his 10 book anthology. We will have to invent a new one for 24+
