Khione Darkstone is a witch with dark magic, and when she was escorted from Brightstone and banished, she told them 'good riddance'. Being dragged home, was not on the cards and solving the murder that has the heir to the village and her baby sister in prison - care factor of zero.
But they have left her no choice. They will destroy her livelihood if she refuses, so from the ashes of her bitter childhood, she is going to have to relive, relearn and get a new perspective on her quaint little hometown. Her mother, ugh. Her father. Argh. Her sister. Sigh. And the whole town of busy-body, know-it-alls. Shudder.
It will be easy, solve one little murder and she's free to return to her urban life.

Absolutely fantastic read - 5 * is enough
What a great read. One of the best I've read this year. Wonderful characters, complex, intense and so alive that you can touch them. The plot is murder but it is so much more. Right and wrong, evil and good. With a heroine that not only has to battle her family, that forced her out when she was only 15, but also the residents of the small community that stood by and let it happen. Now she has been summoned back to find a murderer.
Summoned by fire destroying her gallery, her friends losing their jobs and the only friend in town is her Granny. So why do they need her to find the killer? Because no one else can? Hexes, dead bodies, blackmail, more murders and a killer that enjoys their job. Will she be able to complete it? Will her parents drive her out again?
