Fungi of the Far Realms is a guide to over 200 fantastical mushrooms. Each mushroom is lavishly illustrated in traditional watercolour and annotated by the esteemed fictional mycologist E. Q. Wintergarden, creating a diegetic field guide of such indulgent quality as to put most real world examples to shame.
The Melsonian Arts council published weird stuff. Their flagship RPG is Troika! and that certainly brings the weird in heaps. This tome is one that they also advertise a lot.
So, what is it?
Well, have you had a RPG session with a lot of exploration? The players constantly want to forage for food or just to find something interesting while on the way to the next landmark? Have you ever wanted a very large random table for such foraging trips? So you don't just have them shoot the 996th deer. Well, you could have them encounter some really weird mushrooms.
Fungi of the Far Realsm is a collection of more than two hundred fantasy mushrooms ranging from the mundane to the clearly magical. There are delicious mushrooms, poisonous mushrooms, and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Each mushroom is described, potentially given some historical context, and has its environment, taste, and smell listed. Each entry also contains a lovely watercolor illustration showing both naturalist views and a cross-section as well as a scene better illustrating the mushroom or its effects.
It's fun. There's a ton of quest hooks here and it's set up as a giant random table. There are even a handful of bonus mushrooms at the end. They even include a random table of hallucinogenic effects. It's a wonderful, fun, visual feast of a book in immaculate trappings. Melsonia makes a delight of everything they create and this is no exception. So, pick it up. And next time your players are out foraging give the dice a roll and see what comes up. Then see if they'll eat it.
This is about the most brilliant supplement for TTRPGs that I have ever seen. Not only is it a physically beautiful book, it also explores a subject that most gamers have likely never included in their game scenarios, creating a wealth of opportunities for new experiences.
Author Alex Clements has constructed his material in a completely system-neutral way, so all of these great fungi can be easily adapted into any game that you happen to be playing. And on another level, the book is just fun to read, with the wonderful color printing really highlighting Shuyi Zhang's ability to render each species with a unique personality. Just great stuff all around!
