Jim McGill #12

The Big Fix

Rate this book
When friends need a hand, McGill is their man. Former Metro PD detectives Meeker and Beemer, now working as private investigators, have a client who has a winning Grand Slam lotto ticket worth $212 million. Only there’s another winner, and this one has been officially announced while Meeker and Beemer's client feels like he’s getting squeezed out. With a nine-figure payoff hanging in the balance, Meeker and Beemer decide they’ll need McGill’s help to make sure things work out the right way.

That same morning, newswoman-provocateur Ellie Booker drops in on McGill. She has a simple request for him. Tell her just how much trouble she might be facing. Only Ellie doesn’t want to share why she might be in danger. Unable to reach an agreement with McGill, Ellie walks out and almost gets gunned down the moment she leaves the building.

At first glance, the two cases seem to have nothing to do with each other, but in McGill’s world life is never that simple. The Big Fix is classic McGill.

As my Jim McGill series binge intensifies, I remain in awe with all that Joseph Flynn has been able to accomplish. McGill is still in the middle of the action, even with the White House years behind him. This allow the private investigator to remains close to the action, as his company has branched out significantly. In a case where there are two apparent lotto winners, McGill and his team must get to the root of the issue to see if luck is on the side of the ticket holder. Also, in a freak shooting outside McGill’s Washington office, there appears to be someone gunning for a feisty journalist. A chilling novel that pulls on all the strings to keep things moving. Flynn does a masterful job once more!

Jim McGill has built a reputation for being someone that can be relied upon to help friends and foes alike. When two former Metro PD cops approach McGill for some assistance with a new client, he is happy to guide them. Former MPD detectives Meeker and Beemer have a client who has recently won the Grand Slam lotto, with a jackpot of a whopping $212 million. However, there appears to be a second winner, one who is not being named inn the media. The validity of this second winner is in question, forcing the new investigators to get to the root of the issue to see what’s going on. This is a massive payout and no one wants to be pat of a scam.

After meeting with McGill that same morning, newswoman and intense investigative journalist Ellie Booker is shot at outside of McGill Investigations International’s Washington office, just after confiding that she might be in some trouble. While she is protected by a man in uniform, her issues begin to snowball and the truth about the shooters, Jordanian nationals, comes to light. Who could want her dead is the real question, which is exacerbated when a second attempt on her life occurs aboard her yacht. A plot to kill Ellie is afoot and McGill refuses to stand down until he has all the pieces in place.

While those appear to be two completely individual cases, Jim McGill knows better than the ignore any errant strings that might be dangling. He’s eager to get to the bottom of it all and make some progress, while helping those around him. All this while his wife, former US president Pattie McGill, seeks to strengthen her impact on the world scene as a force of charitable nature. Joseph Flynn does a great job working through the various plots in this novel to deliver something stunning.

Flynn has done a stellar job once more with the story, presenting and developing many plot points and moving away from the politics-heavy themes. The narrative remains clear and strong, pushing forward with added momentum from a cast of well-placed characters and ongoing story arcs to effectively entertain the reader. Those who have followed the series will see a bunch of great themes developing or resolving, while new ones emerge to tantalise the reader once more . Flynn’s best work comes when he keeps the reader busy synthesising what is going on.

Flynn continues to develop chapters as true ‘parts’ of the book, while vignettes serve the role of shorter chapters. This requires some patience, but is well worth the time invested. Flynn scatters his narratives within chapters, advancing plot points, using more of a mystery flavouring. There remains a great deal to remember, which helps the reader to pay close attention and keep track of plot lines, as well as individual characters. This has been part of Flynn’s process throughout the series.

Kudos, Mr. Flynn, for keeping me attentive as I devoured this book.

This was a solid 4.75 raised to a 5! I am a big Joe Flynn fan and found this to be as engrossing, action filled and fun as previous ones. Jim McGill and his cohorts are deep into two cases, one about faking lottery tickets and defrauding the lottery, and the other about hidden terrorists attempting to do more damage to the US and some of our most treasured national monuments (like the Brooklyn Bridge). I won't go into more details because of spoilers, but would highly recommend this novel to readers who like this genre and enjoy a fast paced read. Thanks to the author and publisher for an ARC for an honest review.

Unbelievable

Let me start by saying, I’m a big fan of Joseph Flynn. I’ve read every book in this series and every other book. Hot Type and Still Coming are a couple of my favorites. The Henchman series has always been a little far fetched but this one is over the top. Jim McGill somehow has the best ideas in ANY situation. And if he doesn’t, one of his close friends come up the genius idea. Come on, no one in his life is just average? I love a good guy against bad guy story as much as any Red Blooded American but come on! And another thing, the story was everywhere. The whole Ellie Booker side story felt, in parts, like The Story. And let’s not talk about the ending! YIKES!

Outstanding

This is excellent. I am always amazed at the way a supposedly simple premise spirals into an complicated web of events. I love the way the author’s mind works and the way he makes it so plausible. Beyond all is the way some setups for future stories are woven subtly into each book and there’s always a kicker at the end that jump starts the next book. There are several points in this book that will effect stories significantly in the future. I can’t wait. Above all I love the characters created.

Review of The Big Fix.

Very appropriate title and a very interesting and timely storyline. This storyline has a Cyber Attack by two foreign countries ( Russia and China) but the attack isn't directed at American Elections, its worst. The attacks had two purposes, embarrass the US Government and fund terrorist groups against the United States. The author also as an added bonus hinted at how a Foreign Government in the Middle East could request that an American citizen could be tried for murder committed on Middle Eastern soil.

The Jim McGill series is great. They are full of great characters, intrigue, imagination, excellent writing, and non-stop enjoyment. Please don't tell me a lot of the books are far-fetched. I don't read these for non-fiction believability. They are FICTION, a diversion, a slice of imagination. I read them because they are just plain Goodreads. Some of them kept me up reading all night. Enjoy!

I thought this was one of the weaker Jim McGill stories.. Flynn has a habit of setting up interesting ideas and then they don't really go anywhere and we have a lot of scenes of people sitting around and talking without much in the way of action or conflict.. and this one in particular was slow and the ending pretty anti climatic.

Joseph Flynn has just exposed his darkest side so far!

Nothing like greed, revenge, domestic terrorism, and mobilizing MPS 'meter maids"along with freaky brilliant cyber minds taking on Dark Web miscreants...can there be a big enough fix???

Another 5 star masterpiece!

If you've never read a book by Joseph Flynn, you have no idea how much you are missing out. All of Flynn's books are top drawer, but my absolute favorites are his Jim McGill novels.
Starting with The President's Henchman, every book is a rollercoaster ride of epic political proportions. If you like political thrillers, or if you're not sure you do, pick up the first Jim McGill and see what you think. You won't be disappointed.
In this newest incarnation, you're reacquainted with old characters and introduced to new ones. The storyline is layers upon layers and twists and turns that you don't see coming, and those are the best kind of thrilers.
Jim and Company save the country again, this time from terrorists and lottery game hackers, foiling multiple plots to create chaos and cause death. I can't wait to see what's in store for Jim, Patti, Jean, and everyone else!
PS--pay attention to the scene with Putnam and Sweetie on the roof. It's outrageously awesome!

Jim McGill is back in a big way as he and his associates investigate a possible lottery scam as well as death threats to a famous journalist. He and wife (and former president) Patti take on threats from rogue Jordanian thugs who are out to make life miserable for the journalist as well as Jim’s office. I love the way Mr. Flynn interconnects each part of the complete story so that you are kept up on the happenings in each investigation…even when those investigations, at times, overlap. Jim is a retired Chicago detective who married Patti, a former actress, after the death of her husband. He and Patti, his children by his first marriage and his law enforcement associates are the characters in this amazing series which takes Patti to the White House as President as they battle through domestic and international intrigue. One of my all-time favorite series and authors. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. (by paytonpuppy)

Two Criticisms!

I love Joseph Flynn's books. My problem is that once I start reading one I can't put it down. Partially that is because there are few easy breaks but mostly because I am anxious to know what happens next. My second issue is that he does not write them quickly enough. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all of the other books especially ones featuring Jim, Sweety and the cast of "thousands" . Anyone new to the series will best enjoy the books of you start at the beginning. You won't regret it and will likely find yourself addicted like myself and others to whom I have recommended these books.

Well worth the wait

This is one of my favorite series. Good to see it’s continuing. As always the characters are well fleshed out and the action is nonstop. It was good to see all the characters from previous novels present and accounted for. And, as normal, the plot is all to probable. I suggest that if you aren’t familiar with the series, start at the first one and read your way forward. If you know the series, get ready to enjoy one of the better books. Highly recommended.

Another Great Jim McGill Adventure

Joseph Flynn has the scariest imagination and has once again scared me about the future with this latest Jim McGill. Jim is the spouse of the former POTUS and a PI in his own right. His adventures through cases are exciting and thrilling. If you like thrillers, political novels, PI stories or just a damn good read--you will love this series!
